Some seasons of waiting last for a year or two. Others stretch so long that we almost stop daring to speak about them. Sarah’s life was marked by a long season of waiting. She followed Abraham away from her homeland into the unknown. She experienced fear, weakness, disappointment, and the painful reality of barrenness. She even laughed when she first heard God’s promise, because the promise seemed far beyond what human eyes could believe.

But God had not forgotten.

Genesis 21:1–7 shows us that the Lord visited Sarah as He had said, and did unto Sarah as He had spoken. Isaac’s birth was not only the birth of a child; it was a sign of God’s faithfulness. The human body grows weak, faith can tremble, and tears may gather over many years—but the word of God does not fail. He may not fulfill His promise according to our expected schedule, but He always fulfills it according to His appointed time.

A Minute of Grace

In today’s Scripture, the Lord visits Sarah as He had said and fulfills what He had promised. Sarah conceives and bears Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken. The child is named Isaac, a name connected with laughter. What was once a laugh of disbelief becomes a testimony of grace-filled joy.

This short passage is filled with comfort. It reminds us that God is not only the God who gives promises from afar; He is also the God who fulfills His word when the appointed time has come. Sarah’s story tells us that waiting does not mean God has forgotten, and delay does not mean God has failed. God’s silence is not His absence, and His timing is never random.

2 Scripture says that Sarah gave birth “at the set time of which God had spoken.” Have you ever felt anxious, disappointed, or doubtful because God did not work according to your timeline? Are you willing to surrender your schedule to Him again?

3 Sarah said, “God hath made me to laugh.” Is there an area of your life where you once thought only regret remained, but where you still want to believe that God can bring new joy and testimony?

“Father, thank You for reminding me through the birth of Isaac that You are the God who remembers. You did not forget Sarah, and You did not forget the word You spoke to Abraham. Lord, I confess that when waiting becomes long, I often grow weary, doubtful, and afraid that I have been forgotten by You.

Help me trust Your faithfulness even when I cannot see the outcome. Help me hold on to Your word when my circumstances have not yet changed. When my heart begins to grow discouraged, lift my eyes back to You. Teach me not only to wait for an answer, but to know You more deeply in the waiting. Remind me that Your silence does not mean You are absent, and Your delay does not mean You have failed. Amen.”

“Lord, Genesis 21 tells us that Sarah gave birth at the set time of which You had spoken. You have Your own appointed time, and Your wisdom is greater than my understanding. Yet I often want things to happen according to my schedule, my plan, and my way. When You do not answer according to my expectations, I easily become anxious, disappointed, or restless.

Forgive me for wanting to control what belongs in Your hands. Teach me to surrender my timeline to You again. Help me believe that You know the right time, the right way, and the deeper purpose behind Your work. Keep me from being swallowed by anxiety or disturbed by comparison. Let my heart rest in this truth: what You have spoken, You will fulfill; what You have promised, You will faithfully carry out. Amen.”

“Father, I also pray for the sisters around me who are waiting. Some are waiting for change in their marriage. Some are waiting for their children to grow and return. Some are waiting for physical healing, a job opportunity, a restored relationship, or a new beginning. Some have waited so long that their hearts carry weariness, tears, and disappointments they can hardly express.

Lord, comfort them personally. Let their waiting not lead them into bitterness, but draw them closer to You. Let them not sink into despair, but receive fresh hope from Your presence. Help us also become gentle companions to one another. Keep us from offering shallow words or pressuring others to “just have faith.” Instead, teach us to walk with them through prayer, tenderness, patience, and real love. Amen.”

“Compassionate Father, I also pray for people around the world who are living in long seasons of waiting. Some are waiting for war to end. Some are waiting for justice to be done. Some are waiting to be reunited with family. Some are waiting for food, shelter, healing, and safety. For many, waiting has not lasted a few days, but has stretched into months or years with no clear end in sight.

Lord, have mercy on this broken world. Let Your justice come to the oppressed. Let Your comfort reach the grieving. Let Your provision come to those in need. Let Your peace enter places of violence and fear. Raise up people who are willing to serve as vessels of help, hope, and healing in Your hands. May more people come to know that You are the God who fulfills His word in due time, and the Lord who can turn weeping into joy. Amen.”

As we finish Genesis 21:1–7, we see a child born out of impossibility and a God who never fails His word.
