Day 2 of the Women’s Bible Plan: Read Genesis 2 and reflect on God’s design for rest, work, relationship, marriage, and mutual support. Through the story of Eve, this devotional helps women rediscover the dignity of being a helper—not as someone lesser, but as one created by God with wisdom, strength, love, and purpose.
Sometimes the word “helper” can stir up complicated feelings in a woman’s heart. Does it mean I am only standing behind someone else? Does it mean my needs, my voice, and my calling always come last? In marriage, family, church, friendship, and work, many women are used to supporting others, caring for others, and holding everything together—yet sometimes quietly feel unseen, exhausted, or forgotten.
But Genesis Chapter 2 gives us a very different picture. God’s design for relationship was never meant to erase a woman’s dignity or silence her voice. From the beginning, God created human relationship to reflect companionship, trust, mutual care, and shared life before Him.
JANUARY 2 / Day 2
In Genesis Chapter 2, God places the man in the garden of Eden to dress it and keep it. This chapter shows us that God cares not only about creation, work, and responsibility, but also about loneliness, companionship, and relationship. God sees that “it is not good that the man should be alone,” and He Himself prepares a helper meet for him.
Eve was not created because she was secondary. She was created because God saw the deep need for companionship, partnership, and support. She was formed by God’s own hand and brought to the man as a gift of grace, dignity, and shared calling. Her presence turns solitude into communion, isolation into companionship, and responsibility into life shared together.
Today’s theme, “Created to Be a Helper,” does not mean that a woman must lose herself, silence herself, or exhaust herself in order to love others. A godly helper is not someone without value or voice. She is someone strengthened by God’s love, guided by His wisdom, and able to support others with both tenderness and truth.
When you hear the word “helper,” what rises in your heart first—warmth, purpose, pressure, pain, or resistance? Are you willing to let God define this calling for you, instead of allowing culture, past wounds, or misunderstanding to define it?
God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone.” Are you carrying something alone right now—in marriage, parenting, ministry, work, or family life? What would it look like to bring your loneliness honestly before God and also receive help from trustworthy people?
Eve was brought into a relationship of companionship and mutual support. In your closest relationships, do you tend to control, withdraw, complain, stay silent, or over-give? How might God be inviting you today to build relationships with honesty, respect, love, and healthy boundaries?
As you read Genesis Chapter 2 today, notice how God establishes rest, work, limits, marriage, and intimate relationship. Let this chapter gently remind your heart that being a helper in God’s design is not a small or invisible calling. It is a calling filled with dignity, wisdom, strength, and love.
Take a quiet breath before you begin. Bring your hopes, weariness, disappointments, and longings in relationships before the Lord, and let His Word speak into them.
“And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.”
— Genesis 2:18
2 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.
2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.
4 These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens,
5 And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground.
6 But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.
7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
8 And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.
9 And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
10 And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads.
11 The name of the first is Pison: that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold;
12 And the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx stone.
13 And the name of the second river is Gihon: the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Ethiopia.
14 And the name of the third river is Hiddekel: that is it which goeth toward the east of Assyria. And the fourth river is Euphrates.
15 And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.
16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:
17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
18 And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.
19 And out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.
20 And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.
21 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;
22 And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.
23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.
24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.
✨ Thank you for walking through today’s Scripture with us, dear sister.
Genesis Chapter 2 reminds us that God not only created humanity, but also established rest, work, boundaries, marriage, and relationship. He saw human loneliness and prepared a helper suitable for the man. Now, let us bring our responsibilities, relational weariness, hopes, and hidden needs before the Lord in prayer.
🩷My Safe Harbor
“Father, thank You for reminding me through Genesis Chapter 2 that woman was not created as an afterthought, nor as someone of lesser value. You saw the loneliness of man, and You formed Eve with Your own hand. Lord, help me not to view the word ‘helper’ through the lens of worldly pressure, cultural misunderstanding, or painful experiences.
Teach me that true help is not the same as being ignored, used up, or voiceless. A helper in Your design carries wisdom, tenderness, strength, and love. In my home, marriage, church, workplace, and friendships, help me serve not out of fear, guilt, or the need to please others, but from the deep security of knowing that I am first seen, loved, and strengthened by You. Amen.”
🧑🧑🧒🧒 Sisterhood
“Lord, You said that it was not good for man to be alone. You know that we were not created to carry every burden by ourselves. Please enter into my closest relationships—my marriage, family, friendships, church community, and daily interactions.
If I have learned to survive by doing everything alone, teach me to humbly receive help. If I have tried to control others because of fear, help me surrender that fear to You. If I have been wounded in relationships, gently heal my heart so that I do not hide behind silence, bitterness, or distance.
Give me a heart that is both tender and wise. Teach me to listen well, speak honestly, support others faithfully, and also rest when I need to rest. May my relationships become places where Your love, respect, truth, and grace can grow. Amen.”
🧑🧑🧒🧒 Sisterhood
“Father, I lift up the women around me today. You know how many sisters are silently carrying heavy relational burdens. Some feel lonely in marriage. Some are exhausted in parenting. Some are still healing from wounds in their family of origin. Some give constantly in ministry or work, yet rarely feel understood or encouraged.
Lord, comfort them. Let them know they were not created merely to endure, perform, or meet everyone else’s expectations. Surround them with wise, loving, and faithful support. Help us become helpers to one another—not comparing, criticizing, or competing, but praying for one another, encouraging one another, and walking together toward You. Amen.”
🌍 Global Cry
“Compassionate Father, I also pray for women around the world who are suffering through broken relationships, loneliness, injustice, and fear. I pray for women trapped in unhealthy marriages, domestic violence, poverty, war, exploitation, and systems that strip away their safety and dignity. I pray for those who live surrounded by people, yet feel deeply unseen and unheard.
Lord, raise up Your Church to become a place of protection, comfort, and practical help. Bring healing where families are broken. Bring faithfulness where marriages are wounded. Bring companionship to the lonely, safety to the vulnerable, and dignity to those who have been pushed aside. Let the world see more of Your original design for relationship—not control and harm, but love, companionship, mutual support, and faithful care. Amen.”
As we close this page and step back into the real noise of life—marriage conversations, family responsibilities, work pressure, ministry needs, and the quiet burdens no one else may see—remember this: God did not create you to carry everything alone, and He did not call you to lose yourself in order to love others.
To be a helper in God’s design is not to disappear. It is to receive love from Him first, then offer love with wisdom, strength, tenderness, and healthy boundaries. Today, when you feel stretched thin or unseen, pause and remind your heart: “God sees me. God strengthens me. God teaches me how to love and how to receive love.”
May the beauty of God’s original design for relationship become a gentle light over your day. May you learn to be supported by Him, to support others with grace, and to walk in relationships where love, truth, and peace can grow.
