Welcome to Day 21 of the Brothers’ One-Year Bible Reading Plan.

After the episode in Chapter 16 where Abram acted according to the flesh by taking Hagar and fathering Ishmael, Scripture records a long silence of 13 years. When Abram reached 99 years of age, God appeared to him once more. This time, God revealed Himself under a new name: "I am the Almighty God (El Shaddai)."

God presented a high calling to the 99-year-old Abram, whose natural strength was entirely exhausted: "Walk before me, and be thou perfect." Furthermore, God changed his name from Abram ("exalted father") to Abraham ("father of a multitude of nations"), establishing the perpetual covenant mark of circumcision.

Circumcision was performed on the most intimate part of a man’s body—the symbol of procreation and natural fleshly strength. It solemnly declared that whoever belongs to God must cut away all absolute reliance on self and flesh, placing wholehearted trust in the Almighty God.

As brothers bearing weight for our families and confronting our own limitations and spiritual battles, today’s text issues a vital challenge: stop trying to tough it out through human flesh and sheer willpower. Come before the Almighty God, receive life's spiritual circumcision, live in holiness before Him, and embrace the high calling of leadership and fatherhood.

13 He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised: and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant.

14 And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant.

Following 13 years of silence, God appeared when Abraham’s natural abilities were utterly dead. This was not merely a covenant renewal, but a radical reshaping of every brother's spiritual life:

1. Knowing "El Shaddai" — Experiencing Sufficiency at the End of Yourself

For the first time, God revealed Himself as El Shaddai (the Almighty, All-Sufficient God). Abraham was 99 years old, and Sarah’s womb was humanly dead. Yet precisely when human strength hit zero, God proclaimed Himself as the Almighty God.

Brothers, we frequently tumble into despair when our personal talent, resources, and wisdom run dry. But God wants us to realize: man’s end is God’s beginning. Whether you face career dead-ends, family exhaustion, or spiritual failure, turn to El Shaddai—His grace and power are more than sufficient to cover your every lack.

2. "Walk Before Me, and Be Thou Perfect" — The Spiritual Leader’s Pursuit of Holiness

God commanded Abraham: "Walk before me, and be thou perfect." "Perfection" here does not mean sinless flawlessness, but rather an undivided heart, unfeigned loyalty, and integrity before God.

As heads of households and pillars in society, brothers face daily pressures to compromise morally. God calls us to "walk before Him"—living not for human applause or fear of man, but under God’s watchful eye. True spiritual leadership is measured not by outward bravado, but by a heart that fears God and pursues purity in private and public affairs alike.

3. The Spiritual Meaning of Circumcision — Cutting Off Fleshly Reliance, Sealing God’s Mark

God required circumcision as the physical sign of the covenant. Cutting away a portion of the flesh symbolized the stripping away of fleshly pride, human willpower, and self-reliance (foreshadowing the "circumcision of the heart" in the New Testament).

What is birthed through the flesh ends up as an "Ishmael" (bringing conflict and distress); what is fulfilled through faith in God's promise becomes an "Isaac." Brothers, in leading families, advancing careers, or serving churches, we must undergo spiritual circumcision—cutting away arrogant self-sufficiency, hot-tempered fleshly outbursts, and indulgence in sinful lusts. Only when we surrender complete lordship to God can He use us to build lasting spiritual influence.

Heavenly Father, El Shaddai, Almighty God:

We bow before Your presence today with profound reverence and praise! Thank You for revealing Yourself in Genesis Chapter 17 as the Almighty God, declaring Your infinite sufficiency and unchanging covenant to Abraham in his season of complete human weakness.

Lord, we confess that like Abraham, we often resort to fleshly schemes when facing long waiting periods or impossible circumstances; we also confess that we too easily live for human approval, failing to walk before You with undivided hearts and integrity. Forgive our pride and foolishness, and wash us clean through the precious blood of Jesus Christ.

Father, perform a spiritual circumcision of the heart in every brother today! Cut away our self-reliance, our fleshly anger, and our hidden sinful desires, setting Your holy mark upon our lives. Teach us to walk before You daily, standing as holy husbands and fathers at home and men of unshakeable integrity in the workplace.

Lord, when our strength fails and options disappear, remind us that You are El Shaddai—the All-Sufficient God! May Your almighty power revive our spirits so that we may inherit Your promises and become a blessing to many.
