Esther: Speaking Courageously 

📖 Esther Chapter 7 

A Minute of Grace

Esther Chapter 7 records Esther’s second banquet for King Ahasuerus and Haman. During the feast, the king again asks Esther what she desires and promises to grant her request. At this moment, Esther finally speaks. She pleads for her own life and for the life of her people. She explains that she and her people have been sold to be destroyed, slain, and to perish. When the king hears this, he is filled with wrath and asks who would dare to do such a thing.

Esther clearly answers, “The adversary and enemy is this wicked Haman.” In that moment, the hidden plot is uncovered, the secret evil is exposed, and Haman falls from arrogance into judgment. The gallows he had prepared for Mordecai becomes the very place of his own downfall.

Esther’s courage was not recklessness. Before this moment, there had been fasting, waiting, wisdom, and careful timing. She did not argue in uncontrolled emotion, nor did she accuse without discernment. In the moment God prepared, she spoke clearly, truthfully, and firmly. Her courage and wisdom became a key part of God’s deliverance for the Jewish people.

From the perspective of “Women in the Bible,” Esther’s story reminds us that God uses women not only through gentleness and endurance, but also through courage, discernment, speech, and action. A woman who fears God can remain clear-minded in danger, truthful before power, and no longer silent at the critical moment.

Today’s theme, “Esther: Speaking Courageously,” invites us to reflect: Are there truths in our lives that need to be brought into the light? Are there injustices that need to be named? Are there vulnerable people who need someone to speak on their behalf? Speaking courageously is not about attacking others. It is about allowing truth to be revealed, evil to be stopped, life to be protected, and God’s deliverance to move forward.

Whispers for the Heart

1 Esther did not speak too soon, but sought the right time through prayer, fasting, and waiting. When you face a difficult conversation, an important decision, or a truth that needs to be spoken, are you more likely to speak impulsively, or to remain silent because of fear? Is God inviting you to learn how to wait in prayer and then speak courageously at the right time?

2 Esther told the king the truth: she and her people had been sold and were facing destruction. Are there things in your life that have long been hidden, suppressed, or avoided, and now need to be brought into God’s light? It may be pain in a relationship, an unjust situation, fear in your heart, or a problem that needs to be faced honestly.

3 Esther’s courage was not only for herself, but also for the deliverance of her people. Is there someone around you who is weak, oppressed, or unable to speak for themselves? Is God calling you to watch over them, pray for them, and perhaps speak for them with wisdom, gentleness, and courage at the proper time?

As you read Esther Chapter 7 today, do not only notice Haman being exposed and judged. Also notice how Esther speaks the truth with courage and wisdom at the critical moment. Her story reminds us that God often works through one obedient person to bring hidden darkness into the light and deliverance to many.

Take a quiet breath before you begin. Bring before the Lord the truths, conversations, responsibilities, and fears that you need courage to face, and let His Word meet you there.

Esther Chapter 7 (KJV) 

7 So the king and Haman came to banquet with Esther the queen.

2 And the king said again unto Esther on the second day at the banquet of wine, What is thy petition, queen Esther? and it shall be granted thee: and what is thy request? and it shall be performed, even to the half of the kingdom.

3 Then Esther the queen answered and said, If I have found favour in thy sight, O king, and if it please the king, let my life be given me at my petition, and my people at my request:

4 For we are sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be slain, and to perish. But if we had been sold for bondmen and bondwomen, I had held my tongue, although the enemy could not countervail the king's damage.

5 Then the king Ahasuerus answered and said unto Esther the queen, Who is he, and where is he, that durst presume in his heart to do so?

6 And Esther said, The adversary and enemy is this wicked Haman. Then Haman was afraid before the king and the queen.

7 And the king arising from the banquet of wine in his wrath went into the palace garden: and Haman stood up to make request for his life to Esther the queen; for he saw that there was evil determined against him by the king.

8 Then the king returned out of the palace garden into the place of the banquet of wine; and Haman was fallen upon the bed whereon Esther was. Then said the king, Will he force the queen also before me in the house? As the word went out of king's mouth, they covered Haman's face.

9 And Harbonah, one of the chamberlains, said before the king, Behold also, the gallows fifty cubits high, which Haman had made for Mordecai, who spoken good for the king, standeth in the house of Haman. Then the king said, Hang him thereon.

10 So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then was the king's wrath pacified.

💡 Closing Thought · No Longer Silent When It Is Time to Speak 

After reading Esther Chapter 7, we see Esther finally speaking courageously at the critical moment. She did not speak to prove herself or to release emotion. She spoke so that truth would be revealed, lives would be protected, and she could take part in God’s deliverance for His people. Her courage was shaped through prayer, waiting, and wise preparation.

As we close this page and return to our own lives, perhaps you are facing a relationship that needs honest conversation, a problem that needs to be addressed, a situation where someone needs you to speak for them, or a truth that should no longer remain hidden. Remember this: silence can sometimes be waiting, but it can also become avoidance. Ask God for discernment to know when to be quiet and when to speak, when to endure and when to act.

May today’s Scripture remind you that God can use an obedient woman to speak the right words at the right time, bringing protection, turning points, and hope. May you not be bound by fear or controlled by anger, but courageously speak the truth that needs to be spoken in God’s wisdom and love.
