Day 43 of the Women’s Bible Plan: Read 1 Samuel 18:17-30 and reflect on Michal, Saul’s daughter, whose love for David became entangled in her father’s fear, jealousy, and political schemes. Through her story, this devotional helps women see the wounds that can come when marriage, family, and love are shaped by power, control, and fear instead of honor, protection, and truth.
Love is meant to be a precious gift. Marriage is meant to be a covenant relationship of commitment, care, and faithful companionship. But in a fallen world, marriage can sometimes be used by power, controlled by family pressure, twisted by fear, and even turned into a tool for someone else’s agenda.
In 1 Samuel Chapter 18, we meet a young woman named Michal. She was the daughter of King Saul, and she is one of the few women in Scripture specifically described as loving David. Yet her love was not simply protected or blessed. Very quickly, it became caught in Saul’s jealousy, fear, and political plotting against David.
Michal’s story shows us that in a family ruled by power and fear, a woman’s emotions and marriage can easily be sacrificed. She loved David, yet her father used her as a snare. She entered marriage, but not in a healthy, peaceful, or blessed environment. Her story reminds us that God sees the vulnerability of women in relationships, and He also sees hearts wounded by politics, family pressure, control, and fear.
February 12 / Day 43
1 Samuel 18:17-30 records how Saul, fearing and envying David because David was loved by the people, tried to use marriage as a trap. At first, Saul promised his older daughter Merab to David, but he did not keep that promise. Later, when Saul learned that his daughter Michal loved David, he did not respond like a father protecting his daughter’s heart. Instead, he saw her love as an opportunity to destroy David.
Scripture says that Saul thought, “I will give him her, that she may be a snare to him.” These words are painful to read. Michal’s love, in her father’s eyes, was not a feeling to be respected, but a tool to be used. Saul required David to bring one hundred foreskins of the Philistines as the bride price. His heart was not seeking the blessing of marriage, but hoping David would die by the hand of the Philistines.
From the perspective of “Women in the Bible,” Michal’s situation in this passage is deeply worth noticing. She is called Saul’s daughter, and her identity is closely tied to her father’s royal power. She loves David, yet she does not truly have control over the direction of her own marriage. Her marriage begins under the shadow of politics, fear, and hidden schemes.
Michal’s story is not a simple romantic love story. It reveals a deeper reality: when a family is ruled by jealousy and control, when a father’s power becomes greater than his care for his daughter, and when marriage is treated as an exchange, a strategy, or a bargaining tool, those who seem to have the least power often suffer the deepest wounds.
Today’s theme, “Michal, Saul’s Daughter: Love and Disappointment,” invites us to reflect: In love and marriage, are people treated with honor? Is a person seen as a life with dignity, rather than a tool for someone else’s purpose? Have we also experienced disappointment or hurt in relationships because of family expectations, pressure, control, or fear?
God’s Word does not beautify these painful human realities, nor does it hide Michal’s difficult position. Scripture shows us that marriage and family can be distorted by sin, and that God sees those who are wounded within those distorted relationships. Today, let us come honestly before Him and bring our feelings about love, marriage, family, power, and disappointment into His presence.
1 Michal loved David, but her love was quickly used by Saul as a political tool and a trap. Have you ever felt that your affection, kindness, loyalty, or commitment was used by someone else? How does this passage help you see that God does not overlook the pain of being controlled or manipulated in relationships?
2 Saul, as a father, did not protect his daughter. Instead, he used her marriage for his own purposes. How do you understand power and boundaries within family relationships? In parent-child relationships, marriage, close friendships, or other intimate relationships, where might there be a need for more respect, honesty, and godly boundaries?
3 Michal’s marriage began under the shadow of fear and schemes. Do you carry disappointment, fear, or insecurity about marriage or close relationships? Are you willing to bring those honest feelings before God and let Him help you rediscover healthy love, respect, and safety?
As you read 1 Samuel 18:17-30 today, do not only notice how David was targeted by Saul’s schemes. Also notice how Michal was drawn into that painful situation. Her story reminds us that God sees women’s sincerity in love, and He also sees the moments when love is used, marriage is distorted, and hearts are wounded.
Take a quiet breath before you begin. Bring before the Lord the parts of your life connected to love, marriage, family pressure, disappointment, and insecurity, and let His Word meet you there.
“And Michal Saul’s daughter loved David: and they told Saul, and the thing pleased him.”
— 1 Samuel 18:20
17 And Saul said to David, Behold my elder daughter Merab, her will I give thee to wife: only be thou valiant for me, and fight the Lord's battles. For Saul said, Let not mine hand be upon him, but let the hand of the Philistines be upon him.
18 And David said unto Saul, Who am I? and what is my life, or my father's family in Israel, that I should be son in law to the king?
19 But it came to pass at the time when Merab Saul's daughter should have been given to David, that she was given unto Adriel the Meholathite to wife.
20 And Michal Saul's daughter loved David: and they told Saul, and the thing pleased him.
21 And Saul said, I will give him her, that she may be a snare to him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him. Wherefore Saul said to David, Thou shalt this day be my son in law in the one of the twain.
22 And Saul commanded his servants, saying, Commune with David secretly, and say, Behold, the king hath delight in thee, and all his servants love thee: now therefore be the king's son in law.
23 And Saul's servants spake those words in the ears of David. And David said, Seemeth it to you a light thing to be a king's son in law, seeing that I am a poor man, and lightly esteemed?
24 And the servants of Saul told him, saying, On this manner spake David.
25 And Saul said, Thus shall ye say to David, The king desireth not any dowry, but an hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of the king's enemies. But Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.
26 And when his servants told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king's son in law: and the days were not expired.
27 Wherefore David arose and went, he and his men, and slew of the Philistines two hundred men; and David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full tale to the king, that he might be the king's son in law. And Saul gave him Michal his daughter to wife.
28 And Saul saw and knew that the Lord was with David, and that Michal Saul's daughter loved him.
29 And Saul was yet the more afraid of David; and Saul became David's enemy continually.
30 Then the princes of the Philistines went forth: and it came to pass, after they went forth, that David behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was much set by.
✨ Thank you for walking through today’s Scripture with us, dear sister.
1 Samuel 18:17-30 shows us that Michal’s love was placed within Saul’s fear, jealousy, and political schemes. She was Saul’s daughter, but she was also a real person with emotions, hopes, and dignity. Now, let us bring our own expectations, disappointments, wounds, and hopes in love, marriage, family, and relationships before God in prayer.
🩷
Father, thank You for reminding me through Michal’s story that You see the real emotions people carry in relationships. You also see the hurt that comes when those emotions are used, ignored, or controlled. Michal loved David, but Saul treated her love as an opportunity to trap David. Lord, this shows me that sin does not only damage outward actions; it also distorts family affection, romantic love, and marriage.
Lord, if I have ever been used, dismissed, controlled, or made to feel that my emotions did not matter, please comfort me personally. Help me know that in Your eyes I am not a tool, not a bargaining piece, and not someone who exists merely to meet another person’s expectations. You see me as precious, and You care about the tears in my heart. Please heal the places where I have been wounded through love and disappointed through trust. Amen.
✨
Lord, Saul was Michal’s father, and he should have protected his daughter. Yet he allowed fear and jealousy to rule him, and he used his daughter’s marriage for his own purpose. Please shine Your light on my life and help me see whether there are unhealthy patterns of power, control, manipulation, or silence in my family or marriage.
Teach me to build boundaries that honor You. Help me understand that honoring parents does not mean losing myself, loving family does not mean allowing harm, and commitment in marriage does not mean being controlled or used. Give me wisdom to be gentle when gentleness is needed, to speak truth when truth must be spoken, and to seek help when help is necessary. May my relationships move farther away from fear and manipulation, and closer to truth, respect, and love. Amen.
🧑🧑🧒🧒
Father, I also pray for the sisters around me who have been wounded in relationships. You know those who feel disappointed in marriage, those who have long been controlled in their families of origin, those who have been used in dating relationships, those who have lost a sense of safety in close relationships, and those who, because of past wounds, are afraid to believe they are worthy of love.
Lord, comfort them, protect them, and provide the right help. If they need wisdom to discern a relationship, guide them. If they need courage to build boundaries, strengthen them. If they need to walk out of harm, prepare spiritual companions, counseling, support, and a safe environment for them. Help us treat one another gently as sisters, not judging one another’s stories too quickly, but becoming support through prayer, listening, and faithful companionship. Amen.
🌍
Compassionate God, I also pray for all people in this world who have been wounded in marriage, family, and intimate relationships. I pray for those forced into unhealthy marriages, those suffering in domestic violence, those harmed by power and financial transactions, those crushed by cultural pressure, and women who are controlled or used in relationships.
Lord, bring mercy and justice. May the wounded receive protection, the lonely receive help, and the oppressed be set free. Raise up wise, loving, and courageous people and churches to become places of refuge for those who have been hurt. May this world know more of the marriage and relationships You designed—not for control, use, and harm, but for love, respect, covenant faithfulness, protection, and mutual upbuilding. Amen.
After reading 1 Samuel 18:17-30, we see that Michal’s love did not unfold in a simple or peaceful setting. She loved David, but her father Saul pulled her into fear, jealousy, and political schemes. Her story shows us that when marriage and affection are used by power, the hearts that most need protection can be deeply wounded.
As we close this page and return to our own lives, perhaps you have also experienced disappointment in relationships: sincerity that was not treasured, trust that was not protected, love that was misunderstood or used, family expectations that became pressure, or intimacy that became fear. Remember this: God sees all of it. He does not only care about what happened outwardly; He also cares about the pain inside you that may be hard to express.
May today’s Scripture remind you that your feelings are not unnecessary before God, and your dignity should not be swallowed by any relationship. May God heal the wounds you carry in love and disappointment, help you relearn love in truth, establish boundaries with wisdom, and find safety again in His unchanging love.
