Day 104 of the Women’s Bible Plan: Read Genesis Chapter 39 and reflect on Joseph’s fear of God when he faced temptation. Through Joseph’s refusal to sin with Potiphar’s wife, this devotional helps women consider faithfulness in marriage, purity in relationships, clear boundaries, and the wisdom of fleeing sexual immorality.
Faithfulness in marriage is not only about avoiding outward betrayal. It begins in the heart—with reverence before God, covenant love toward one’s spouse, and a serious regard for holiness. Many temptations do not arrive all at once in obvious forms. They often draw near through daily interaction, emotional hunger, loneliness, power dynamics, the feeling of being noticed, or situations that seem hidden from everyone else.
Genesis Chapter 39 shows us Joseph in Egypt as a servant, yet the Lord was with him and made all that he did to prosper. Potiphar trusted him and placed everything in his house under Joseph’s care. But in that very place of trust and responsibility, temptation came. Potiphar’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph and pressured him to sin.
Joseph was not facing a brief, passing temptation. He faced repeated pressure. Yet he answered with clear conviction: “how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” This brings faithfulness in marriage back to its deepest foundation: sin is not only harm against people; it is first an offense against God.
Genesis Chapter 39 tells us what happened after Joseph was brought down to Egypt and became a servant in Potiphar’s house. The Lord was with Joseph and made all that he did to prosper. Potiphar saw that the Lord was with him, so he entrusted his household and all that he had into Joseph’s hand.
Yet Joseph’s temptation arose in that very environment. Potiphar’s wife set her eyes upon Joseph and tempted him day after day. Joseph refused her, not merely because Potiphar trusted him, and not simply because he feared consequences. He understood clearly that this was “great wickedness” and a sin against God.
This passage reveals several important truths about temptation, marriage, and sexual purity. First, temptation may appear in places that seem stable, successful, and trusted. Second, temptation may not be a one-time moment; it can become daily pressure. Third, spiritual boundaries are not only inward intentions. They also include outward distance and practical refusal. Scripture says Joseph “hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, or to be with her.”
Potiphar’s wife also warns us that unfaithfulness often begins with disorder in the heart. When a person no longer fears God, honors marriage, respects another person’s identity, or keeps proper boundaries, desire can become destructive. Her temptation, false accusation, and revenge show us that sin is never merely private. It can break relationships, create injustice, and bring deeper harm.
Joseph finally chose to flee. His fleeing was not weakness; it was wisdom. It was not failure; it was victory. Some temptations cannot be overcome by lingering, explaining, or testing our own strength. They must be fled. Fleeing sexual immorality is not only a warning for the young. It is spiritual protection for every person in marriage, relationships, work, ministry, and daily life.
Today’s theme, “Joseph and Potiphar’s Wife: Faithfulness in Marriage,” invites us to reflect: Are we willing to set clear boundaries because we fear God? When temptation keeps drawing near, are we willing to leave quickly rather than make room for sin? God calls us to holiness not to restrict us, but to protect our hearts, marriages, families, and intimacy with Him.
1 When Joseph faced temptation, he said, “how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” When you think about emotional, verbal, mental, or relational boundaries, do you first think of God? What helps you live before Him with reverence even when no one else sees?
2 Potiphar’s wife tempted Joseph day after day, showing that temptation can become repeated pressure. Are there areas in your life where you need to set serious boundaries—a relationship, a pattern of messaging, emotional dependency, certain content, certain environments, or certain habits? What would it look like to flee practically, instead of only telling yourself to “be careful”?
3 Joseph chose to flee, and he suffered false accusation because of it. Are you willing to pay the price for holiness, even if others misunderstand you or you seem to lose something for a time? In marriage, family, work, and ministry, how can you learn to place faithfulness, purity, and reverence for God above temporary comfort or advantage?
As you read Genesis Chapter 39 today, do not see this only as a story about Joseph overcoming temptation. Let it also become a mirror that helps us examine the boundaries, relationship patterns, and covenant faithfulness of our own hearts. God does not merely call us to “avoid sin.” He calls us to love faithfully, fear Him deeply, flee temptation wisely, and protect both ourselves and others in holiness.
Take a quiet breath before you begin. Bring your thoughts, relationships, marriage, emotional boundaries, and hidden weaknesses before the Lord, and let His Word meet you there.
“how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?”
— Genesis 39:9
39 And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him of the hands of the Ishmeelites, which had brought him down thither.
2 And the Lord was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.
3 And his master saw that the Lord was with him, and that the Lord made all that he did to prosper in his hand.
4 And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.
5 And it came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the Lord blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; and the blessing of the Lord was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field.
6 And he left all that he had in Joseph's hand; and he knew not ought he had, save the bread which he did eat. And Joseph was a goodly person, and well favoured.
7 And it came to pass after these things, that his master's wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me.
8 But he refused, and said unto his master's wife, Behold, my master wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand;
9 There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?
10 And it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, or to be with her.
11 And it came to pass about this time, that Joseph went into the house to do his business; and there was none of the men of the house there within.
12 And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out.
13 And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled forth,
14 That she called unto the men of her house, and spake unto them, saying, See, he hath brought in an Hebrew unto us to mock us; he came in unto me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice:
15 And it came to pass, when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled, and got him out.
16 And she laid up his garment by her, until his lord came home.
17 And she spake unto him according to these words, saying, The Hebrew servant, which thou hast brought unto us, came in unto me to mock me:
18 And it came to pass, as I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled out.
19 And it came to pass, when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spake unto him, saying, After this manner did thy servant to me; that his wrath was kindled.
20 And Joseph's master took him, and put him into the prison, a place where the king's prisoners were bound: and he was there in the prison.
21 But the Lord was with Joseph, and shewed him mercy, and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison.
22 And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph's hand all the prisoners that were in the prison; and whatsoever they did there, he was the doer of it.
23 The keeper of the prison looked not to any thing that was under his hand; because the Lord was with him, and that which he did, the Lord made it to prosper.
✨ Thank you for walking through today’s Scripture with us, dear sister.
Genesis Chapter 39 shows us that Joseph did not compromise with sin when he faced temptation. Because he feared God, he chose to flee. Even when he was falsely accused and suffered for doing what was right, he remained clean before the Lord. Now, let us bring our marriages, relationships, boundaries, weaknesses, and desire for holiness before God in prayer.
🩷
Fearing God Even When No One Sees
Father, thank You for reminding me through Joseph’s response that true faithfulness begins before You. Joseph did not see temptation only as an offense against his master, a broken relationship, or a danger with consequences. He said clearly, “how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” Lord, place that kind of holy fear in my heart.
When I am in hidden places, when my thoughts begin to wander, when I am drawn by someone’s attention, emotional emptiness, loneliness, or secret desire, please shine Your light on me quickly. Do not let me minimize danger by saying, “It is only a thought,” “It is only a conversation,” or “I just want to feel understood.” Remind me that my life is open before You. Help me fear You in private and in public, loving what You love and hating what You hate. Amen.

Setting Clear and Holy Boundaries in Relationships
Lord, Potiphar’s wife tempted Joseph day after day, but Joseph did not listen to her, did not lie with her, and did not remain with her. Give me wisdom to know that holiness is not a vague promise to “be careful.” Holiness sometimes requires clear boundaries and practical distance from danger.
Help me examine my relationships, words, messages, online content, emotional dependencies, and daily habits. If anything is slowly eroding my marriage, my heart, my purity, or my relationship with You, give me the courage to stop, leave, delete, cut off, or seek help. Help husbands and wives build trust and honesty with one another, leaving no room for secrecy, flirtation, or deception. May my relationships be marked by love and truth, tenderness and boundaries. Amen.
🧑🧑🧒🧒
Father, I also pray for the sisters and families around me. You know that many marriages are under pressure and temptation. Some face emotional distance, broken communication, long loneliness, outside attraction, wounds from technology or hidden sin, or pain caused by secrecy and betrayal.
Lord, protect every family. Help husbands and wives fear You again, honor their covenant, cherish one another, and give no place to the enemy. If a sister is struggling in temptation, give her clarity and courage to flee quickly. If a family has already been wounded, bring true repentance, healing, counsel, and rebuilding. Help us watch over one another in the church and in sisterhood—not with judgmental eyes, but with truth and mercy, supporting one another as we walk into the light. Amen.

Praying for Marriage, Family, and Sexual Holiness in This Generation
Compassionate God, I also pray for the brokenness of marriage, family, and sexual purity in this generation. We live in a world that often treats marriage lightly, indulges desire, blurs boundaries, and disguises temptation as freedom. Many people are deeply wounded by unfaithfulness, deception, pornography, abuse of power, relational confusion, and bondage to lust.
Lord, have mercy on this world. Raise up families that fear You, relationships that are pure, and marriages that are faithful. Protect children from losing safety in brokenness and confusion. Protect young people from being swallowed by false values. Protect Your Church from compromise with the world. May Your truth shine again in human hearts, showing us that holiness is not shameful, faithfulness is not outdated, and marriage covenant is not bondage, but a protection and blessing from You. Amen.
After reading Genesis Chapter 39, we see that Joseph’s victory did not come because the situation was easy or the temptation was small. It came because his heart had a clear center: he feared God. He knew that some things must not be done—not only because they bring consequences, but because they are “great wickedness” against God. So when temptation came near, he did not stay to negotiate with sin. He chose to flee.
As we close this page and return to real life, our temptations may not look exactly like Joseph’s. Yet every day, in many small choices, we decide what we will draw near to, what we will flee from, what we will cherish, and what we will allow. Remember this: faithfulness does not begin only when a great temptation arrives. It begins in daily reverence for God, guarding the heart, setting boundaries, and leaving danger before it grows.
May today’s Scripture remind you not to ignore any small crack that is eroding holiness. May you keep covenant in marriage, purity in relationships, watchfulness in your thoughts, and decisiveness before temptation. May God give you a heart that fears Him, so that your life, marriage, and family may be protected by His holiness.
