September 30: Mark 9:38-41: A Cup of Cold Water in the Lord’s Name
Women’s Bible Reading Plan Day 273. Today we read Mark 9:38-41. The theme is “A Cup of Cold Water in the Lord’s Name.” Through Jesus’ words to His disciples, we learn to value every small act of service done in His name. This page includes Mark 9:38-41 Scripture, devotional reflection, meditation questions, a daily devotional verse, prayer, and life application.
Sometimes we may feel that service has to be big, visible, and impressive in order to matter. But in today’s passage, Jesus reminds us that even giving someone a cup of water in His name will not lose its reward.
This is a tender encouragement for many sisters. Perhaps much of what you do each day feels ordinary: caring for family, comforting a friend, praying quietly for someone, sending an encouraging message, carrying responsibilities, or choosing gentleness when you are tired. These things may seem small to others, but when they are done out of love for the Lord, they are precious in His eyes.
Mark 9:38-41 also reminds us not to view others too narrowly. If someone honors the name of Christ and serves in His name, we should not quickly dismiss or hinder them. God’s work is wider than we imagine, and the Lord sees every hidden, quiet, faithful act of love.
Mark 9:38-41 records that John said to Jesus, “Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and he followeth not us: and we forbad him.” But Jesus answered, “Forbid him not.”
The disciples noticed, “He does not follow us.” Jesus noticed, “He acts in My name.” This gently reminds us that we can sometimes judge people by our own circle, habits, or familiar ways, while forgetting what matters most: whether Christ is being honored.
Jesus then says that whoever gives His disciples a cup of water in His name will not lose his reward. A cup of water is small and easily forgotten, but the Lord remembers it. Sisters, this is such a warm reminder: many acts of love in our lives are quiet and small. Yet the Lord sees every kindness, every prayer, every patient response, and every faithful offering done for Him.
Today’s theme, “A Cup of Cold Water in the Lord’s Name,” invites us to learn two things: first, do not look down on the service others do in the Lord’s name; second, do not look down on the small faithfulness God has placed in your own hands. When it is done for Christ, even a small act of love matters.
1 John wanted to stop the man who was casting out devils in Jesus’ name because “he followeth not us.” Do you sometimes judge another person’s service by your own style, background, experience, or circle?
2 Jesus said, “Forbid him not.” How can this help you look at other believers and servants of the Lord with a wider, gentler heart?
3 Jesus said that whoever gives a cup of water in His name will not lose his reward. What small things have you recently done out of love for the Lord? Perhaps a word of comfort, a prayer, a simple help, or a patient choice?
4 How can you offer someone “a cup of cold water” today? It may be an encouraging word, a caring message, a listening ear, a practical help, or a quiet prayer for someone in need.
Today, let us enter Mark 9:38-41 with these questions. Do not look down on small service done in the Lord’s name, and do not look down on the cup of water God has placed in your hand.
Let us take a quiet moment and bring our comparison, judgment, discouragement, and self-doubt before the Lord. Then let us begin today’s reading together.
“For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.”
— Mark 9:41
38 And John answered him, saying, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and he followeth not us: and we forbad him, because he followeth not us.
39 But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me.
40 For he that is not against us is on our part.
41 For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.
✨ Thank you for walking through today’s Scripture with us, dear sister.
Mark 9:38-41 reminds us that the Lord values service done in His name, and He remembers even the small acts of love that may go unnoticed by others. Now let us bring our hearts before God and ask Him to give us a wider vision and a gentle, faithful heart.

Ask the Lord to Give Me a Wider and Gentler Heart
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me through today’s passage that Your work is wider than I often realize. Many times, I look at others from my own point of view. I notice who is similar to me, who serves in a way I understand, or who belongs to a circle I recognize, and I forget that what matters most is whether Your name is being honored.
Lord, please adjust my heart. Keep me from judging too quickly or hindering others because they are different from me. Help me see Your work in different people, learn to appreciate it, bless it, and give thanks for it. Amen.
✨
Ask the Lord to Help Me Not Despise Small Service
Lord, thank You for saying that even a cup of water given in Your name will not lose its reward. This comforts my heart because I know You see the things others may never notice. You see when I choose gentleness in weariness. You see when I pray for someone, comfort someone, help someone, or remain faithful in small ways.
Help me not to despise the small service in my hands. Remind me that when something is done for You, out of love for You, it has meaning. May I continue to share Your love through simple and faithful actions in ordinary days. Amen.

Ask the Lord to Make Me a Cup of Refreshment to Others
Heavenly Father, please make me like a cup of cold water to the people around me. When someone is tired, help me offer encouragement. When someone feels lonely, help me offer presence. When someone is weak, help me pray. When someone needs help, give me a willing heart.
Lord, let my service not only be shown in big moments, but also in daily kindness and faithfulness. May my words, attitude, and actions bring comfort and strength from You. Amen.

Interceding for Sisters
Heavenly Father, I also pray for the sisters around me who are serving quietly. Many are giving themselves in their homes, churches, workplaces, and relationships, yet they are not often seen or thanked. Please comfort them personally and remind them that You never overlook their faithfulness.
May every sister be strengthened by Your love. Let her not grow discouraged because her service seems small, and let her not draw back because no one notices. Help us encourage one another, remain faithful in You, and become cups of cold water in the lives of others. Amen.
After reading Mark 9:38-41, we see that Jesus’ vision is wider than the disciples’ vision, and His heart is gentler than ours. He does not despise those who act in His name, and He does not overlook even something as small as a cup of water.
Dear sister, perhaps what you can do today feels small. Perhaps your service is quiet, and few people notice. But remember: the Lord sees, and the Lord remembers. A comforting word, a prayer, a helping hand, or a gentle choice made for Him is never in vain.
May today’s Scripture encourage you not to look down on others and not to look down on yourself. Take the cup of water in your hand, offer it in the name of the Lord, and gently bless the people around you.
🎉🎉 Congratulations on completing today's devotion! 🎉🎉
