Bible in a Year - Women’s Thematic Reading Plan | Day 262
September 19: Matthew 22:34-40: The Greatest Commandment
September 19: Matthew 22:34-40: The Greatest Commandment
Women’s Bible Reading Plan Day 262. Today we read Matthew 22:34-40. The theme is “The Greatest Commandment.” Through Jesus’ answer about the heart of the law, we learn to love the Lord with all our heart, soul, and mind, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. This page includes Matthew 22:34-40 Scripture, devotional reflection, meditation questions, a daily devotional verse, prayer, and life application.
Sometimes life pulls our hearts in many directions: family, work, children, ministry, relationships, worries, and the quiet pressure to do everything well. We want to love well, serve well, and not disappoint the people around us. But in the middle of doing so much, our hearts can become tired, and love can begin to feel heavy.
In Matthew 22, a lawyer asks Jesus, “Master, which is the great commandment in the law?” Jesus gives a clear and beautiful answer: Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. And the second is like unto it: Love thy neighbour as thyself.
This passage brings us back to the center. Faith is not first about doing more; it is about love. Love God first, and our hearts find their true direction. Love others rightly, and our faith becomes visible in daily life. For us as sisters, this is not another burden to carry, but an invitation to return to the simplest and deepest order of life: be filled with God’s love, and live from that love.
Matthew 22:34-40 records Jesus’ answer to a lawyer who asked which commandment is the greatest. Jesus does not give a complicated answer. He brings life back to its true center: love God, and love your neighbor as yourself.
To love the Lord with all our heart, soul, and mind is not only something we do at church or during devotion. It means learning to let God have first place in our hearts, desires, thoughts, choices, time, and daily priorities. Dear sister, this does not mean we must be perfect. It means we are invited to keep bringing our hearts back to Him.
To love our neighbor as ourselves does not mean pleasing everyone or losing ourselves in the needs of others. It means learning to see people through God’s love, while also receiving His love for our own hearts. True love is not without wisdom or boundaries. It is gentle, honest, patient, and rooted in God.
Today’s theme, “The Greatest Commandment,” reminds us that spiritual life is not deeper because it is more complicated. It becomes deeper when it returns to love. Today, let us ask: Is God first in my heart? Am I learning to love people in the ordinary places of life?
1 Jesus says to love God with all your heart, soul, and mind. Recently, what has been filling your heart the most: God’s Word, or pressure, worry, comparison, plans, and people’s opinions?
2 Loving God is not only a feeling; it is a life order. What is one small way you can put God first today? It may be a quiet prayer, an obedient choice, or choosing not to complain.
3 Jesus says to love your neighbor as yourself. Is there someone in your life who needs more patience, gentleness, or forgiveness from you?
4 “Love thy neighbour as thyself” also reminds us not to love others by completely exhausting ourselves. Do you need to receive God’s love for your own heart and learn to love others in a healthier way?
Today, let us enter Matthew 22:34-40 with these questions. May this short passage bring our busy lives back to the simple center: love God, and love people.
Let us take a quiet moment and place our hearts before the Lord. Ask Him to reorder our love and renew our priorities.
“Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.”
— Matthew 22:37
34 But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together.
35 Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,
36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
✨ Thank you for walking through today’s Scripture with us, dear sister.
Matthew 22:34-40 shows us that Jesus places the heart of God’s commandments in one word: love. To love God is the direction of life. To love others is the witness of faith. Now let us come before God and ask Him to renew our hearts, so that we may not only know the greatest commandment, but truly live in His love.

Ask the Lord to Help Me Love Him Again
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me through the words of Jesus that the most important thing in life is not how much I accomplish, how many responsibilities I carry, or how many people approve of me, but whether I truly love You.
Lord, I confess that my heart is often filled with many things. Pressure, plans, family needs, people’s opinions, and my own expectations can make me busy and tired. Please help me turn my heart back to You. Let me not seek You only when I need help, but draw near to You each day, listen to Your Word, and put You first. Amen.
✨
Ask the Lord to Teach Me to Love Others with His Love
Lord, You also teach me to love my neighbor as myself. But I know that loving people is not always easy. I may lose patience with those closest to me. I may pull away from those who have hurt me. I may feel tired when others need care.
Please fill me first with Your love, so I do not try to love only by my own strength. Help me show more gentleness, honesty, forgiveness, and mercy to my family, friends, coworkers, and the people around me. Teach me to love with wisdom—not by pleasing everyone or emptying myself, but with peace, strength, and healthy boundaries in You. Amen.

Ask the Lord to Reorder My Heart
Heavenly Father, please help me see that my daily choices reveal what I love most. My time, attention, emotions, and decisions often show the true order of my heart. Gently reorder my love and place Yourself again at the center of my life.
May I remember You in busy days, honor You in relationships, depend on You under pressure, and obey You in my choices. Let my life be moved not by fear or comparison, but by love for You. Amen.

Interceding for Sisters
Heavenly Father, I also pray for the sisters around me. Many women pour themselves out for family, work, children, ministry, and relationships, yet often forget that they also need to be comforted and strengthened by Your love.
Please embrace every tired heart. Remind each sister that she does not need to earn Your love through performance. She is already deeply loved by You. Help us return together to the center of love—not simply trying harder, but drawing nearer to You. Let there be more understanding and less judgment, more support and less comparison among us. Amen.
After reading Matthew 22:34-40, we see that Jesus brings all the commandments back to love: love God with all your heart, and love your neighbor as yourself.
Dear sister, your life may not be easy. You may have many things to handle each day. But today’s Scripture reminds us not to lose the direction of love in the middle of busyness. Come back to God first. Let His love fill you again. Then carry that love into the people and situations before you.
May your heart grow deeper in love for the Lord, and may your ordinary days shine with the gentleness, wisdom, and love that come from Him.
🎉🎉 Congratulations on completing today's devotion! 🎉🎉
