September 10: Matthew 13:44-46: The Hidden Treasure and the Pearl of Great Price
Women’s Bible Reading Plan Day 253. Today we read Matthew 13:44-46. The theme is “The Hidden Treasure and the Pearl of Great Price.” Through Jesus’ parables of the hidden treasure and the pearl of great price, we reflect on the truth that the kingdom of heaven is more precious than everything else. This page includes Matthew 13:44-46 Scripture, devotional reflection, meditation questions, a daily devotional verse, prayer, and life application.
Our lives are often spent searching for what is “worth it.” Relationships worth investing in, goals worth pursuing, families worth protecting, and hopes worth patiently waiting for. At times, we are also pulled by the values of the world, believing that more security, more recognition, more achievement, or more applause will finally satisfy our hearts.
But in Matthew 13, Jesus uses two very short parables to place the preciousness of the kingdom of heaven before our eyes. One man finds treasure hidden in a field, and for joy thereof he sells all that he has and buys that field. A merchant man is seeking goodly pearls, and when he finds one pearl of great price, he also sells all that he has and buys it.
Both parables show us this: when the value of the kingdom is truly seen, a person no longer gives things up reluctantly, but willingly pays the cost because she has seen something far greater. It is not because she has lost too much, but because she has gained something far more precious. It is not because she is forced to surrender, but because her heart has finally seen that the kingdom of God, the presence of God, the salvation of God, and the promises of God are worth more than all things.
In Matthew 13:44-46, Jesus gives two brief yet profound parables to show the value of the kingdom of heaven. The first parable says that the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field; when a man finds it, he hides it, and for joy thereof goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. The second parable says that the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant man seeking goodly pearls; when he finds one pearl of great price, he goes and sells all that he has and buys it.
Both parables emphasize one truth: the kingdom of heaven is immeasurably precious. Whether it is the man who unexpectedly finds treasure or the merchant who has long been searching for fine pearls, when they truly see the value of what they have found, they respond in the same way—they sell all that they have in order to gain what is truly worth having.
The phrase “selleth all that he hath” does not mean that we can purchase salvation by our own actions, nor does it mean that God’s grace must be exchanged for human merit. Salvation is entirely the free gift of God’s grace. Yet when a person truly recognizes the preciousness of the kingdom and truly sees the glory of Christ, everything she once clung to as ultimate begins to lose its highest place. She is willing to let go because she has received a greater joy.
The parable of the hidden treasure reminds us that the kingdom of heaven may not be the most obvious treasure on the surface, yet it is the truest and most valuable treasure. The world may not see its worth, but those whom God has enlightened know that this is the treasure most worthy of being cherished, guarded, and pursued. The parable of the pearl of great price also reminds us that the human heart is always searching for beauty, wholeness, satisfaction, and eternity. But only in the kingdom of God, and only in Christ, do we find the treasure that surpasses all things.
Today’s theme, “The Hidden Treasure and the Pearl of Great Price,” invites us to examine ourselves: Do I truly see that the kingdom of heaven is more precious than everything else? What do I treasure most, pursue most, and fear losing most? When the kingdom of God comes into conflict with the values of the world, am I willing to reorder my priorities because I have come to know the surpassing worth of Christ?
1 Jesus says that the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. Do you truly believe that God’s kingdom, God’s Word, God’s presence, and God’s promises are more precious than what the world can offer? In daily life, where are you most likely to overlook the value of the kingdom?
2 After the man finds the treasure, he sells all that he has “for joy thereof.” Have you ever experienced willingly letting go of something you once held tightly because you saw the preciousness of Christ? It may have been a pursuit, a sense of security, a comparison, a form of pride, or a choice that did not please God.
3 The merchant man keeps seeking goodly pearls until he finds one pearl of great price. What has your heart been searching for lately? Have you placed your satisfaction, security, sense of worth, or hope in limited people or things, while forgetting that Christ is the true pearl of great price?
4 If the kingdom of heaven is truly more precious than everything else, do your time, money, relationships, decisions, and priorities need any adjustment today? In what specific area can you let the kingdom of God take first place again?
Today, let us enter Matthew 13:44-46 with these questions. Do not treat these two parables merely as short spiritual lessons. Let them shine into our values, choices, and the deepest longings of our hearts. Jesus does not call us to lose joy, but to see the treasure that is truly worthy of our whole-hearted pursuit.
Let us take a quiet moment and bring before the Lord the things we are holding tightly, the things we fear losing, and the things we are chasing. Then let us begin today’s reading together.
“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.”
— Matthew 13:44
44 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.
45 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls:
46 Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.
✨ Thank you for walking through today’s Scripture with us, dear sister.
Matthew 13:44-46 uses the parables of the hidden treasure and the pearl of great price to show us that the kingdom of heaven is not an optional spiritual decoration, but a treasure worthy of a lifetime of cherishing, seeking, and responding. When a person truly sees the preciousness of God’s kingdom, she no longer only counts what she has lost, but rejoices because she has gained Christ and His kingdom. Now let us bring our hearts before God and ask Him to renew our vision, so that we may see the kingdom of heaven as more precious than everything else.

Ask the Lord to Open My Eyes to the Preciousness of His Kingdom
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me through the words of Jesus that the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field and like a pearl of great price. Many times, I confess that my vision is too easily drawn to what is right in front of me. Visible achievements, human approval, a stable life, financial security, and affirmation in relationships can so easily occupy my heart and cause me to forget that Your kingdom is the true eternal treasure.
Lord, open my eyes and help me see Your preciousness again. Let me not merely know that faith is important, but truly see from my heart that knowing You, belonging to You, and living in Your kingdom are more valuable than everything I possess. Keep my heart from being captivated by temporary satisfaction, and draw me instead by Your eternal beauty. Amen.
✨
Ask the Lord to Help Me Willingly Let Go of Lesser Things
Lord, the man who found the treasure joyfully sold all that he had in order to gain the field. Through this, You show me that true surrender is not forced misery, but a willing choice made because something greater has been seen. Yet I confess that I still often cling to my own plans, reputation, security, comparisons, desires, and sense of control, unwilling to place everything fully in Your hands.
Help me discern what is temporary and what is eternal; what gives only momentary satisfaction and what draws me closer to You. If certain pursuits are pulling me away from You, give me courage to let them go. If certain worries are replacing my trust in You, help me surrender them again. If anything has become more important in my heart than You, gently reorder my priorities. May I not surrender with a heart of loss, but joyfully obey because I have gained You. Amen.

Ask the Lord to Make Christ the True Treasure of My Heart
Heavenly Father, the merchant man sought goodly pearls, and when he found one pearl of great price, he sold all that he had and bought it. Lord, my heart is also often searching—searching to be loved, affirmed, understood, and needed; searching for security, satisfaction, direction, and belonging. Yet many things I thought would satisfy me are still limited and cannot fill the deepest emptiness within me.
Help me know Christ more deeply, because He is the true pearl of great price in my life. May I find in Him a peace that circumstances cannot take away, a worth that does not depend on performance, and a hope that the world cannot shake. Let me no longer use limited things as substitutes for You, and let me no longer place ultimate expectations on people. May Christ become my deepest satisfaction, my highest joy, and my most precious inheritance. Amen.

Interceding for Sisters
Heavenly Father, I also pray for the sisters around me. We live in a world that constantly tells us, “You are not enough”—not successful enough, not beautiful enough, not secure enough, not loved enough, not capable enough. Many sisters therefore run after these things in exhaustion, trying to maintain an outward appearance while inwardly feeling empty, anxious, and restless.
Lord, help them see that in Christ they already have an inheritance more precious than anything the world can offer. May the sisters carrying heavy burdens in daily life know that You are their true refuge. May those bound by comparison and insecurity see their value in Your eyes. May those searching for direction and satisfaction encounter You, the Lord of life. Help us remind one another not to give our hearts to temporary things, but to seek together the eternal kingdom. Amen.
After reading Matthew 13:44-46, we see that Jesus uses two short parables to place before us the immeasurable value of the kingdom of heaven. The hidden treasure and the pearl of great price both remind us: when a person truly sees the worth of God’s kingdom, paying the cost is not loss but wisdom; letting go of lesser things is not poverty, but the way to gain fuller life.
As we turn this page, we will still face many choices. We will continue to carry responsibilities in life, the needs of family, the pressures of work, and the expectations within relationships. We will also continue to hear the world telling us what counts as success and what is worth pursuing. But may today’s Scripture help us ask again in every choice: Does this draw me closer to God? Does this pursuit make my heart more free? Am I using something limited to replace the eternal treasure?
May the Lord renew our vision, so that we are no longer deceived by temporary brightness, but see that Christ and His kingdom are the true treasure of life. Because we have seen the preciousness of the kingdom of heaven, may we willingly adjust our steps, reorder our lives, and live out the joy, freedom, and hope of God’s kingdom in ordinary days.
