Bible in a Year - Women’s Thematic Reading Plan | Day 274
October 1: Mark 10:35-45: Becoming the Servant of All
October 1: Mark 10:35-45: Becoming the Servant of All
Women’s Bible Reading Plan Day 274. Today we read Mark 10:35-45. The theme is “Becoming the Servant of All.” Through James and John’s request for places of honor, we see Jesus’ teaching about true greatness in the kingdom of God: not striving to be greater than others, but humbly serving; not grasping for position, but learning the self-giving love of Christ. This page includes Mark 10:35-45 Scripture, devotional reflection, meditation questions, a daily devotional verse, prayer, and life application.
In life, we may not always say it out loud, but deep inside we often long to be seen, appreciated, and valued. We want our efforts to matter. We want our quiet sacrifices to be noticed. In family, work, ministry, or relationships, we hope our place is respected. These feelings are real, and they can touch tender places in our hearts.
In Mark 10, James and John come to Jesus and ask to sit at His right and left hand in His glory. When the other disciples hear this, they become displeased. Jesus does not simply rebuke them; He uses this moment to teach them that the way of His kingdom is very different from the way of the world.
Jesus says, “Whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all.” This does not mean we must ignore our own worth or live without healthy boundaries. It means Jesus gently leads our hearts away from striving, comparing, and trying to prove ourselves. In His kingdom, true greatness looks like love, humility, and serving others from a heart that has first been loved by Him.
Mark 10:35-45 records James and John asking Jesus for positions of honor, one at His right hand and one at His left, in His glory. They are following Jesus, yet their hearts are still shaped by human ideas of status, recognition, and importance. When the other disciples hear it, they become displeased, showing that they too care about who is higher and who matters more.
Jesus does not leave them in comparison and ambition. He tells them that the rulers of the Gentiles exercise lordship over people, and great ones exercise authority over them. “But so shall it not be among you.” In God’s kingdom, disciples do not prove themselves through position; they learn to serve in love.
Jesus says that whoever wants to be great must become a servant, and whoever wants to be first must be servant of all. For us as sisters, this is not a call to lose our boundaries or exhaust ourselves to prove our love for God. It is a call to serve with the heart of Christ: not to be praised, not to compete for position, not to show how important we are, but to be faithful, humble, and loving in the place God has given us.
Finally, Jesus points to Himself as the example: “For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.” True service does not come from self-proving. It flows from being filled with the love of Christ. We are first loved, served, and saved by Him; then we learn to serve others with His love.
Today’s theme, “Becoming the Servant of All,” invites us to examine our hearts: In my family, work, ministry, and relationships, do I want to be seen most, or do I want Christ to be seen through me? Am I willing to let service overcome striving, and self-giving love overcome the desire for position?
1 James and John asked for high positions in Jesus’ glory. Have you ever quietly longed to be seen, affirmed, or placed in an important position? Where has this desire been touched recently—in a relationship, ministry, family responsibility, or workplace situation?
2 When the other disciples heard it, they were displeased, showing that comparison was also in their hearts. Do you ever feel uncomfortable when someone else is praised, chosen, noticed, or trusted with a role you wanted? How might Jesus be inviting you to lay down comparison?
3 Jesus says that whoever wants to be great must become a servant. In the place where you are now—at home, at work, in church, or among friends—is there someone the Lord is inviting you to serve with humility and love?
4 Jesus came not to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many. How can you serve today from His love, not from pressure, guilt, or the need to be recognized?
Today, let us enter Mark 10:35-45 with these questions. Do not only notice the disciples’ weakness; let the words of Jesus gently shine into our own hearts. Many of us know what it feels like to want to be seen. Yet Jesus invites us into another way: not striving to be greater, but serving in love; not grasping for position, but following Him in self-giving love.
Let us take a quiet moment and bring our comparison, disappointment, desire for affirmation, and weariness in serving before the Lord. Then let us begin today’s reading together.
“For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.”
— Mark 10:45
35 And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come unto him, saying, Master, we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall desire.
36 And he said unto them, What would ye that I should do for you?
37 They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory.
38 But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?
39 And they said unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them, Ye shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of; and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized:
40 But to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine to give; but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared.
41 And when the ten heard it, they began to be much displeased with James and John.
42 But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them.
43 But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister:
44 And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all.
45 For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
✨ Thank you for walking through today’s Scripture with us, dear sister.
Mark 10:35-45 shows us that even the disciples could fall into ambition, comparison, and the desire to be lifted up. But Jesus brings them back to the way of the kingdom: true greatness is not standing above others to be served, but humbly serving and loving like the Lord Himself. Now let us bring our hearts before God and ask Him to help us let service overcome striving, and self-giving love overcome the desire for position.

Ask the Lord to Cleanse My Desire to Be Lifted Up
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for shining Your light on my heart through today’s Scripture. Many times, I may not ask for a high position like James and John did, but I still long to be seen, affirmed, and valued. When I give much and no one notices, or when others are praised while I feel overlooked, my heart can become disappointed, comparing, and hurt.
Lord, gently cleanse my heart. Remind me that my worth does not come from applause or from the place I hold in people’s eyes. My worth comes from the truth that You have loved me, received me, and saved me. Help me stop trying to prove myself through being greater, and let my heart rest securely in Your love. Amen.
✨
Ask the Lord to Teach Me to Serve with Love
Lord Jesus, You said that whoever wants to be great must become a servant, and whoever wants to be first must be servant of all. Help me understand that true service is not forcing myself to please everyone or becoming so exhausted that I have nothing left. True service begins with receiving Your love and then loving others in a healthy and faithful way.
Give me a soft but steady heart. Help me show more patience in my family, more faithfulness in my work, and more humility in church and friendships. Let me serve not for praise, and not with hidden bitterness, but because I love You and want to be faithful in the place You have given me. Amen.

Ask the Lord to Help Me Learn the Self-Giving Love of Christ
Heavenly Father, Jesus came not to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many. This shows me that true self-giving love does not make me worthless; it flows from being deeply loved by You.
Help me learn the heart of Christ. In my relationships, give me less need to always be understood, and more willingness to listen. Give me less desire to win every argument, and more desire to seek peace. Give me less anxiety about my position, and more trust that You are leading me. May my life not lift up myself, but let others see the gentle and steady love of Christ. Amen.

Interceding for Sisters
Heavenly Father, I also pray for the sisters around me. Many of them quietly serve in their homes, workplaces, churches, and relationships, yet their labor is not always seen. Some care for others while feeling tired themselves. Some serve faithfully but have been hurt by comparison or disappointment. Some are afraid they are not enough, so they keep trying to prove their worth through busyness.
Lord, comfort their hearts. Let every sister know that You see her hidden labor, and You treasure even the tears no one else sees. Help us not live by human approval, but be strengthened again in You. May we support one another, not compare or compete, but learn together to serve humbly like Jesus. Amen.
After reading Mark 10:35-45, we see that the disciples wanted places of honor, but Jesus pointed them toward the cross. They cared about who would sit on the right and left, but Jesus taught them to become servants of all. The way of God’s kingdom is different from the way of the world: the world values position, but the Lord values love; the world seeks to be served, but the Lord calls us to learn to serve.
Dear sister, perhaps today you need to be seen. Perhaps you are tired from giving quietly. Perhaps there is even some disappointment in your heart. The Lord knows your labor. He is not asking you to prove your love by exhausting yourself. He first serves you, loves you, and saves you; then He invites you to be strengthened by His love and serve others from that place.
May today’s Scripture remind you: true greatness is not winning over others, but becoming more like Christ. May you not be bound by comparison or pulled by anxiety over your place. May you rest in the love of the Lord—gentle, steady, and strong. Let service overcome striving, let self-giving love overcome position, and let your life become a quiet but powerful witness of Christ.
