Day 148 of the Women’s Bible Plan: Read 2 Corinthians 6:14-18 and reflect on the spiritual direction of close relationships. Through Paul’s exhortation to the Corinthian believers, this devotional helps women consider faith, holiness, boundaries, and the importance of walking with God in marriage and intimate relationships.
Close relationships are not only about feelings, companionship, and shared routines. They are also deeply about direction. When two people walk together for a long journey, what matters is not only whether they like each other, whether their personalities fit, or whether their circumstances seem suitable. What matters deeply is where their lives are headed, whom they worship, and what standard guides their choices.
In 2 Corinthians 6:14-18, Paul reminds believers, “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers.” This does not mean Christians should proudly distance themselves from others, nor does it mean we should lack love for those who do not yet believe. Rather, it reminds God’s people that in our deepest covenant relationships, life direction, and spiritual belonging, we cannot ignore the foundation of faith.
For sisters, this passage is especially important to consider in marriage and close relationships. Love is not only about present affection; it also needs to consider future companionship. Marriage is not only the sharing of daily life. It is also the place where values, money, children, worship, suffering, service, and life mission are faced together. If two people are moving in completely different spiritual directions, a close relationship can easily become a place of tension rather than mutual support.
2 Corinthians 6:14-18 is Paul’s exhortation to the Corinthian believers about being set apart for God. He uses a series of strong contrasts to remind them that righteousness and unrighteousness, light and darkness, Christ and Belial, believers and unbelievers, the temple of God and idols, all have fundamentally different spiritual directions.
The image of being “unequally yoked” comes from two animals placed under one yoke to plow together. If they differ in strength, direction, and pace, they will pull against one another and will not be able to move forward in unity. Paul uses this image to warn believers not to bind their deepest spiritual commitments and life direction to values that lead them away from God.
This passage is not limited to marriage; it also speaks broadly to the believer’s relationship with the values of the world. But within the theme of “Marriage and Husband-Wife Relationships,” it gives us an important reminder: close relationships are not spiritually neutral. Who we walk with, who influences us, and whom we give our hearts to will deeply shape our faith, choices, family direction, and rhythm of life.
For unmarried sisters, this passage reminds us that before entering dating or marriage, we should not only ask, “Is he good to me?” We should also ask, “Do we worship the same Lord? Are our lives moving in the same spiritual direction? Will this relationship help me draw nearer to God, or slowly pull me away from Him?” For married sisters whose husbands do not yet believe, this passage is not a call to despise or abandon them. Rather, it is a reminder to hold firmly to faith with love, continuing to look to God through gentleness, prayer, and a godly life.
Paul ends with God’s promise: “I will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters.” This shows us that holiness is not a cold rule, but a response to intimate identity. Because we belong to God, our relationships, bodies, homes, direction, and choices are no longer merely our own. God calls us to be set apart not to take love away from us, but to protect love, so that we may live with truth, holiness, freedom, and clear direction in His light.
Today’s theme, “A Reminder Not to Be Unequally Yoked,” invites us to reflect: In close relationships, am I clear about my spiritual direction? Am I willing to entrust love, marriage, family, and future choices to God? Love that honors God is not only mutual attraction; it is also walking together before Him in the same direction.
1 Paul says, “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers,” reminding believers not to ignore spiritual direction in the deepest bonds of life. How do you view the foundation of faith in close relationships? In dating, marriage, or important relationships, have you ever lowered spiritual principles because you were afraid of losing the relationship?
2 Light and darkness, Christ and Belial, the temple of God and idols all move in fundamentally different directions. Are there relationships, values, or habits in your life that are quietly pulling you away from God? Are you willing to honestly discern before God which relationships may need clearer boundaries?
3 God says, “I will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters.” When you think about marriage and close relationships, do you first remember that you are a beloved daughter of God? How can this identity help you not rush into an unsuitable relationship because of loneliness, anxiety, or the pressure of others’ opinions?
As you read 2 Corinthians 6:14-18 today, do not see this passage only as a “restriction.” See also the heart of a Father who protects His children. God is not calling us not to love people. He is calling us to love with truth, direction, holiness, and freedom that comes from Him.
Take a quiet breath before you begin. Bring your relationships, expectations, loneliness, struggles, marriage choices, and family direction before the Lord, and let His Word meet you there.
“Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers.”
— 2 Corinthians 6:14
14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?
16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.
18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
✨ Thank you for walking through today’s Scripture with us, dear sister.
2 Corinthians 6:14-18 reminds us that God’s people are called to be set apart in relationships, choices, and life direction. God does not call us to follow the values of the world, but to live before Him with purity, faithfulness, and clear direction. Now, let us bring our close relationships, marriage choices, spiritual direction, and inner struggles before the Lord in prayer.

Asking God to Help Me Value Spiritual Direction
Father, thank You for reminding me through today’s Scripture that close relationships are not only emotional closeness, but also life direction. You know my desire to be loved, understood, and accompanied. You also know how sometimes loneliness, anxiety, or fear of missing out can cause me to overlook the spiritual influence behind a relationship.
Lord, help me value what You value. Do not let me make decisions only by feelings, circumstances, appearance, the opinions of others, or a temporary stirring of the heart. Give me a clear mind so that in love, marriage, friendship, and important relationships, I will first ask: Does this relationship help me draw nearer to You? Does it make me more willing to obey You? Does it lead my heart to love truth more and walk more fully in the light? Keep my heart from being led astray by temporary attraction, and guide me by Your Word. Amen.
✨
Setting Clear Boundaries in Love
Lord, You do not call me to proudly distance myself from others, nor to use faith as a way to judge people. You call me to be set apart in love. Teach me how to be both gentle and clear; how to love people without losing spiritual direction; how to care for those who do not believe without giving my heart to people or values that pull me away from You.
If there are relationships in my life that are weakening my faith, blurring my convictions, or making prayer, Scripture, worship, and obedience more difficult, give me courage to face them honestly. Help me not to hide behind thoughts such as “I can change him” or “it will get better later” when You are already warning my heart. Give me wisdom to know which relationships need distance, which expectations need to be surrendered, and which boundaries need to be rebuilt. Amen.
🧑🧑🧒🧒
Father, I also pray for the sisters around me. You know some are struggling in dating relationships and do not know how to face differences in faith. Some feel spiritually lonely in marriage because their husbands do not yet know You. Some, because of age, family pressure, or the opinions of others, are considering whether to lower their convictions. Some have already been wounded in complicated relationships and deeply long for love, yet fear choosing wrongly again.
Lord, guide them personally. Give them wisdom to discern and courage to obey. If they need to wait, strengthen them. If they need to set boundaries, help them. If they are already facing faith differences within marriage, give them gentleness, patience, prayer, and hope. Help us as sisters not to judge one another’s situations lightly, but to accompany, pray, remind, and support one another in truth and love. Amen.

Praying for Relationships and Families to Return to God’s Order
Compassionate God, I also pray for many people in the world who are losing direction in marriage, close relationships, and family choices. Many build love on desire, benefit, control, loneliness, or temporary feelings, and as a result, they are wounded in relationships and wound others as well. Many families carry deep pain because of broken values, conflicting spiritual directions, and a lack of truth and love.
Lord, have mercy on this generation. May more people come to know that true love is not possession, control, or following selfish desire, but mutual respect, protection, and building one another up in truth. Protect young people who are choosing the path of marriage. Heal wounded couples and families. Raise up the church to teach truth, accompany families, and strengthen marriages. May human relationships be brought back into the order of Your love. Amen.
After reading 2 Corinthians 6:14-18, we see that God cares not only whether we love, but also where our love is headed. Close relationships are not simply emotional choices; they shape our worship, values, family, decisions, and direction in life. “Be ye not unequally yoked together” is not a cold rejection of others, but a loving reminder from God to His children: do not entrust your deepest life bond to a direction that will lead you away from Him.
As we close this page and return to real life, perhaps you are discerning a dating relationship. Perhaps you are facing faith differences in marriage. Perhaps you are waiting for the right person. Perhaps you are learning to set boundaries for future relationships. Remember this: you do not belong first to a relationship. You belong first to God. He is your Father, and you are His beloved daughter.
May today’s Scripture remind you that truly beautiful love is not only mutual attraction, but walking toward God together. May you have clear discernment in close relationships, gentle boundaries, and steady trust. May your love, marriage, and family direction be increasingly illuminated by God’s light.
