September 28: Mark 8:34-38: Losing Life for the Lord and the Gospel
Women’s Bible Reading Plan Day 271. Today we read Mark 8:34-38. The theme is “Losing Life for the Lord and the Gospel.” Through Jesus’ call to deny ourselves, take up the cross, and follow Him, we learn not to be ashamed of the gospel, but to choose Christ in real daily life. This page includes Mark 8:34-38 Scripture, devotional reflection, meditation questions, a daily devotional verse, prayer, and life application.
Following Jesus is not always one dramatic decision. Many times, it is choosing Him in small, everyday moments. It may mean laying down our pride in a relationship, staying honest under pressure, holding on to faith when others do not understand, or quietly asking the Lord, “What would please You here?”
In Mark 8, Jesus says, “Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.” This is not a cold command. It is a loving call. The Lord knows we fear losing comfort, approval, control, and the feeling of being understood. Yet He also shows us that true life is not found in holding tightly to everything we want, but in belonging fully to Him.
Today, let us gently ask our hearts: Am I willing not to be ashamed of the Lord and His words? Am I willing to follow Him in the ordinary places of my life?
Mark 8:34-38 records Jesus’ words to the people and to His disciples. He makes it clear that following Him is not only about admiration, agreement, or emotion. It means denying ourselves, taking up the cross, and continuing to follow Him.
To “deny oneself” does not mean that we have no value. It means we no longer let self sit on the throne of our hearts. Sisters, it is easy for our hearts to become crowded by people’s opinions, family needs, work pressure, personal security, and the desire to be accepted. But Jesus invites us to give the rule of our lives back to Him, allowing Him to lead our choices, relationships, time, and direction.
Jesus also says, “Whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it.” Following Him may look like losing something: praise from others, worldly opportunities, personal control, or a comfortable way of life. But nothing given to the Lord is wasted. The life truly kept by God is the life that belongs to Him and lives for Him.
Today’s theme, “Losing Life for the Lord and the Gospel,” invites us to reflect: Do I treasure the gospel more than my image, comfort, and the approval of others? Am I willing to choose Jesus gently but firmly in my daily life?
1 Jesus says, “Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself.” Recently, where have you found it hardest to lay down your own way, control, or pride?
2 What does “take up the cross” look like in your life today? Is it showing patience at home, choosing forgiveness in a relationship, staying honest at work, or not stepping back from your faith?
3 Jesus asks what it profits a person to gain the whole world and lose the soul. Have you been chasing busyness, success, security, or approval while neglecting what your soul truly needs?
4 In your environment, are there moments when you feel afraid to let others know you belong to Christ? How can you live out your trust in Him today with gentleness, honesty, and courage?
Today, let us enter Mark 8:34-38 with these questions. Do not only see “deny yourself and take up the cross” as a heavy command. See it also as the Lord’s tender invitation: let go of what cannot truly save you, and follow the One who truly loves you, saves you, and gives you life.
Let us take a quiet moment and bring our fears, concerns, struggles, and longings before the Lord. Then let us begin today’s reading together.
“Whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it.”
— Mark 8:35
34 And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
35 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it.
36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
37 Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
38 Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.
✨ Thank you for walking through today’s Scripture with us, dear sister.
Mark 8:34-38 reminds us that following Jesus is not only a feeling in the heart, but a real choice in daily life. Jesus calls us to deny ourselves, take up the cross, and not be ashamed of Him or His words. Now let us bring our hearts before God and ask Him to help us follow Christ with gentle courage and daily faithfulness.

Ask the Lord to Help Me Lay Down Self and Truly Follow Him
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me through the words of Jesus that following You is not only saying, “I am willing,” but giving the rule of my life back to You each day. I confess that I often want to hold tightly to my own plans, pride, expectations, and sense of security. I am also afraid of losing the approval of others.
Lord, gently teach me to deny myself. Help me not to be led by self, but to listen to Your voice. In my family, work, relationships, and decisions, help me put You first. Even when the road is not easy, give me a heart that is willing to follow You. Amen.

Ask the Lord for Courage to Take Up the Cross
Lord, You call me to take up my cross and follow You. You know my weakness, and You know my fears. Sometimes I am afraid of being misunderstood. Sometimes I fear being different. Sometimes I worry that following You will cost me convenience, relationships, or opportunities.
Give me quiet and steady courage. When I need patience, help me not run away. When I need to forgive, help me not harden my heart. When I need to be honest, help me not compromise. When I need to stand for the gospel, help me not be ashamed. Let me follow You step by step, not by my own strength, but by Your love and grace. Amen.

Ask the Lord to Reset the Values of My Life
Heavenly Father, Jesus asks, “What shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” This reminds me not to live only for achievement, approval, comfort, or security. The things of the world may look real and urgent, but they cannot save my soul or give me eternal life.
Help me see clearly what truly matters. Let me treasure You more than praise from people, treasure the gospel more than worldly opportunities, and treasure my relationship with You more than outward success. May my life not be pulled by the world, but drawn by the love of Christ. Amen.

Interceding for Sisters
Heavenly Father, I also pray for the sisters around me. Many sisters carry quiet pressure every day—caring for family, facing work, relationships, finances, and emotional burdens. Strengthen their hearts, and let them know that every faithful step taken for You is remembered by You, even when no one else sees.
Give each sister a gentle but firm faith. Help her not be ashamed of the gospel in difficult places, and help her choose to follow You in ordinary days. Teach us to support one another as we walk this path of following Christ together. Amen.
After reading Mark 8:34-38, we hear the clear and loving call of Jesus: if anyone would come after Him, let that person deny himself, take up the cross, and follow Him. The Lord is not trying to take life away from us. He is calling us into the life that is truly life.
Dear sister, perhaps today you are facing a choice: will you hold tightly to your own sense of security, or give the rule of your life to Christ? Will you hide your faith because of people’s opinions, or gently and firmly acknowledge that you belong to the Lord? Will you chase the applause of the world, or follow the Savior who gave His life for you?
May today’s Scripture remind you: nothing offered to the Lord and the gospel is forgotten by God. Do not be afraid to lose what cannot save you. Follow the One who truly loves you, saves you, and gives you life.
