Day 156 of the Women’s Bible Plan: Read Genesis 1:26-28 and reflect on the calling to be fruitful and multiply. Through God’s creation of man and woman in His own image, and His blessing over them, this devotional helps women consider how children and family belong to God’s creative purpose and how parenting, family life, and the care of the next generation are sacred trusts before Him.
When we talk about children and family, many real-life images may come to mind: the laughter of children, and also their tears; the warmth of home, and also the pressures within it; the joy of parenting, and also the weariness, anxiety, guilt, and helplessness that can come with it. For many women, family is not an abstract idea. It is a daily reality filled with responsibilities, relationships, emotions, and choices.
Genesis 1:26-28 takes us back to the very beginning of creation. God created male and female in His own image and blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it.” This is not merely a command about increasing in number. It is a calling related to life, family, stewardship, mission, and the image of God.
Children are not the private possessions of parents, and family is not merely a place to fulfill personal expectations. Children and family first belong to God and receive their meaning from Him. The role of parents is not to control a child’s whole life, but to faithfully receive a trust before God—walking with the next generation through love, truth, example, prayer, and daily faithfulness.
Genesis 1:26-28 is one of the foundational passages in Scripture. God says, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.” Then God creates male and female in His own image and blesses them, commanding them to be fruitful and multiply, replenish the earth, subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and every living thing that moves upon the earth.
This passage shows us that family and parent-child relationships do not begin with human need, but with God’s creation and blessing. Both man and woman are created in the image of God, and the life of a child is not accidental. Each life is given, entrusted, and cherished within God’s created order.
“Be fruitful and multiply” is not only a call to childbirth. It also includes nurture, cultivation, and faithful passing on. God gives life, and He also entrusts human beings with the care of life. Parents are called not only to help children grow up, study, work, and build their future, but also to help them understand who they are: created in the image of God, loved by God, full of dignity, responsibility, and purpose.
For parents, this is both grace and responsibility. Children bring joy, but also many challenges. Family life includes tender moments, but also conflict, exhaustion, failure, and moments that require repentance. Yet God does not entrust families to us and then leave us to carry them alone. He is the God who creates life, blesses families, gives wisdom, and renews relationships.
Today’s theme, “The Calling to Be Fruitful and Multiply,” invites us to think again: To whom do our children belong? Why does family exist? What is the responsibility of parents? This passage helps us see that children and family belong to God’s creative purpose. Our families do not need to be perfect in order to have value. Even in imperfection, they can still be shaped by God into places that reflect His image, pass on His blessing, and learn to love one another.
1 God created male and female in His own image. How do you see the image of God in yourself, your spouse, your children, and your family members? In moments of family conflict, parenting pressure, or parent-child tension, do you still remember that each person is not merely a “problem” to solve, but a life created and loved by God?
2 God blessed human beings and entrusted them with the calling to be fruitful and multiply. Do you tend to see children mainly as your responsibility, your achievement, or your source of pressure—or as lives entrusted by God to be nurtured with love and truth? How might this change the way you face your children today?
3 God not only gave family, but also the calling to steward and care for His creation. What values is your family passing on right now? Anxiety, comparison, control, and busyness? Or trust, gratitude, order, love, and reverence for God? What is one small place where you are willing to begin adjusting, so your home can move closer to God’s original design?
As you read Genesis 1:26-28 today, do not see “be fruitful and multiply” only as an ancient command. Let it remind you that family is a place where God entrusts life, children are a heritage placed in our hands, and parental love and instruction can become channels of God’s blessing for the next generation.
Take a quiet breath before you begin. Bring your family, children, role as a parent, parenting pressures, family relationships, and worries about the future before the Lord, and let His Word meet you there.
“And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it.”
— Genesis 1:28
26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
✨ Thank you for walking through today’s Scripture with us, dear sister.
Genesis 1:26-28 shows us that God created male and female in His own image and entrusted human beings with the calling to be fruitful, multiply, subdue the earth, and exercise stewardship. Children and family are not accidental arrangements, but sacred trusts within God’s creation. Now, let us bring our homes, children, parent-child relationships, parenting responsibilities, and inner pressures before the Lord in prayer.

Seeing the Image of God in My Family
Father, thank You for reminding me through today’s Scripture that human beings are created in Your image. Lord, help me first to see myself through this truth, and also to see my family through it. Whether it is my spouse, children, parents, or those who live and walk with me, they are not people I may control, belittle, or treat carelessly with my emotions. They are lives created and loved by You.
Lord, in the most ordinary and exhausting moments of family life, I easily see only problems, tempers, homework, grades, chores, conflicts, and pressure. I forget the dignity You have given to the person in front of me. Renew my eyes. In my parenting and family relationships, teach me to respond with respect, patience, and love. When correction is needed, let it not come from anger. When reminders are needed, let them not wound the heart. May my home reflect more of Your image and Your love. Amen.

Faithfully Receiving the Trust of Nurturing Life
Lord, You blessed human beings and gave the calling to be fruitful and multiply. Help me remember that children are not my possessions, not proof of my success, and not objects for my anxiety or comparison. They belong first to You. They are lives You have created, cared for, and entrusted to me for a season of guidance and companionship.
Give me wisdom to nurture children well—not only caring about their outward performance, but also their hearts; not only valuing grades, abilities, and future success, but helping them know You, fear You, and understand their worth in Your eyes. Lord, when I feel inadequate, impatient, or aware of my many failures, sustain me by Your grace. Let me not parent by my own perfection, but come to You daily to receive love, repentance, renewal, and strength to begin again. Amen.

Interceding for Families Around Me
Father, I also pray for the parents and families around me. You know that many sisters carry heavy responsibilities in parenting and family life. Some are weary in raising young children. Some feel powerless before teenage children. Some experience tension in marriage and parenting styles. Some are stretched between caring for aging parents and raising children. Some carry deep pain because they cannot have children, have lost children, or have experienced brokenness in the family.
Lord, comfort and strengthen them personally. Give strength to weary parents, peace to anxious parents, healing to wounded families, and companionship to lonely caregivers. Help us also to watch over one another in church and community. Keep us from judging other families lightly or making simple comments about other people’s children. Instead, teach us to support one another with compassion, practical help, and prayer. May every family receive renewed strength in Your grace. Amen.

Praying for Children, Parents, and Families in the World
Compassionate God, I also pray for children, parents, and families throughout the world. I pray for children growing up in war, poverty, migration, broken homes, violent environments, and unstable societies. I pray for parents carrying financial pressure, educational pressure, emotional pressure, and caregiving burdens. Lord, You see many families struggling under heavy loads, and You see many children longing for safety, love, and stability.
Protect children, strengthen parents, and heal broken families. May governments, schools, churches, and communities value the dignity of children and the needs of families more deeply. May resources, care, and protection reach vulnerable homes. Raise up Your people in this generation to guard life, walk with families, and care for the next generation. May children never be treated as burdens or tools, but seen as precious lives created and loved by You. Amen.
After reading Genesis 1:26-28, we see that family and children do not begin with human planning, but with God’s creation, blessing, and mission. God created human beings in His own image and entrusted them with the calling to be fruitful, multiply, govern, and steward. Children are not private possessions of parents, and family is not merely a place to fulfill our own expectations. Family is first a place where God entrusts life, shapes life, and passes on blessing.
As we close this page and return to real family life, there may still be chores to finish, children to care for, relationships to repair, emotions to face, and responsibilities to carry. Remember this: God does not give you a calling and then leave you to bear it alone. He is the God who gives life, and He is also the God who supplies wisdom and grace.
May today’s Scripture remind you that even if your family is not perfect, it can still be renewed by God; even if your children worry you, they are still lives loved by God; even if your parenting has failures, it can still begin again in grace. May God help you see His sacred trust in the ordinary life of your home, and receive His sufficient strength for each day.
