September 29: Mark 9:33-37: Whoever Would Be First Shall Be Servant of All
Women’s Bible Reading Plan Day 272. Today we read Mark 9:33-37. The theme is “Whoever Would Be First Shall Be Servant of All.” Through Jesus’ conversation with His disciples, we learn to lay down comparison, serve with humility, and welcome those who may seem small, unnoticed, or easily overlooked. This page includes Mark 9:33-37 Scripture, devotional reflection, meditation questions, a daily devotional verse, prayer, and life application.
In daily life, it is easy to slip into comparison without even noticing it. Who is more seen? Who has more influence? Who is appreciated? Who seems more important? Even in family, ministry, church, or work, our hearts may quietly ask, “Does anyone see what I am doing? Does my effort matter?”
In Mark 9, the disciples argue on the road about who is the greatest. Jesus does not crush their desire to serve, but He gently turns their hearts in a new direction: “If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.”
Then Jesus takes a child in His arms and teaches them that receiving such a child in His name is receiving Him. He moves their eyes from “Who is the greatest?” to “Who is willing to love with humility?” Today, this passage invites us to learn that true honor is not being lifted up by others, but being willing to bend low in love before the Lord.
Mark 9:33-37 records that Jesus and His disciples came to Capernaum. When they were in the house, Jesus asked them, “What was it that ye disputed among yourselves by the way?” But the disciples kept silent, because on the way they had argued about who should be the greatest.
Their silence feels very real. We may not say it out loud, but our hearts can carry similar questions: Am I seen? Am I appreciated? Am I doing better than others? Dear sisters, the Lord knows our hearts. He also sees the weariness and insecurity hidden behind comparison.
Jesus sits down, calls the twelve, and says, “If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.” In the kingdom of God, greatness is not standing in the highest place, but humbly serving. It is not grabbing for praise, but learning to hold others up with love.
Then Jesus takes a child, sets him in the midst of them, and takes him in His arms. In that time, a child had little status and could not offer fame or reward in return. Yet Jesus says that whoever receives such a child in His name receives Him. This reminds us that the Lord cares deeply about how we treat the small, quiet, weak, unnoticed, and those who cannot repay us.
Today’s theme, “Whoever Would Be First Shall Be Servant of All,” invites us to lay down comparison and return to the heart of Jesus. May we become women who are gentle and strong—not only longing to be seen, but also willing to see others; not only desiring to be loved, but also willing to love those who need to be welcomed.
1 The disciples argued about who was the greatest. Recently, have you been quietly comparing yourself with others in relationships, ministry, family, or work? Has that comparison made your heart freer, or more tired?
2 Jesus says that whoever desires to be first must become servant of all. Where do you most need to learn humble service right now—in your home, church, workplace, or in a specific relationship?
3 Jesus takes a child in His arms and teaches His disciples to receive the lowly. Is there someone near you who is easily overlooked and may need your attention, patience, listening, or encouragement?
4 What is one small way you can respond to the Lord today? Perhaps a gentle word, a quiet act of help, choosing not to compare, or opening your heart to welcome someone.
Today, let us enter Mark 9:33-37 with these questions. Do not rush to prove how important you are. First, quietly notice whom the Lord has placed near you, and how He may be teaching you to welcome them with His love.
Let us take a quiet moment and bring our comparison, hurt, desire to be seen, and willingness to serve before the Lord. Then let us begin today’s reading together.
“If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.”
— Mark 9:35
33 And he came to Capernaum: and being in the house he asked them, What was it that ye disputed among yourselves by the way?
34 But they held their peace: for by the way they had disputed among themselves, who should be the greatest.
35 And he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.
36 And he took a child, and set him in the midst of them: and when he had taken him in his arms, he said unto them,
37 Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name, receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me, receiveth not me, but him that sent me.
✨ Thank you for walking through today’s Scripture with us, dear sister.
Mark 9:33-37 reminds us that greatness in God’s kingdom is not fighting to stand in front, but loving, serving, and welcoming others with humility. Now let us bring our hearts before God and ask Him to help us lay down comparison and learn the gentle humility of Christ.

Ask the Lord to Help Me Lay Down Comparison
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me through today’s Scripture that Your way of seeing people is different from the world’s way. The world often looks at position, ability, applause, and achievement, but You treasure a humble heart that is willing to serve.
Lord, I confess that I can be like the disciples. I compare in my heart. I wonder whether I am seen. I fear that my efforts are not appreciated. Please comfort me and reshape me. Help me remember that my worth does not come from the place others give me, but from being Your beloved daughter. Amen.
✨
Ask the Lord to Give Me a Willing Heart to Serve
Lord Jesus, You said that if anyone desires to be first, he must be last of all and servant of all. Help me not only seek to be loved, understood, and valued, but also learn to love, understand, and support others.
Give me gentleness and patience at home, purity and faithfulness in service, and love that does not keep score in relationships. Let me serve not for praise, but because I love You and want to be faithful in small things. Amen.

Ask the Lord to Teach Me to Welcome the Lowly
Heavenly Father, Jesus took a child in His arms and reminded His disciples to receive those who are easily overlooked. Open my eyes to see the people around me who need care—the quiet, the weak, the lonely, the forgotten, and those who cannot repay me.
Give me a tender heart. Help me not to look down on any small life or ignore any quiet need. Let me carry Your love to them through one word, one action, or a little time. Amen.

Interceding for Sisters
Heavenly Father, I also pray for the sisters around me. Many women quietly give themselves in family, work, and service, yet their labor is not always seen. Please comfort them personally and remind them that every act of love is seen by You.
Protect our hearts from comparison that steals joy and from hurt that makes us cold. May we support one another, appreciate one another, and learn together to serve humbly before You. Amen.
After reading Mark 9:33-37, we see that the disciples cared about who was greatest, but Jesus taught them who was willing to serve. The Lord does not define greatness by the world’s standard. Instead, He places a child among them and reminds them that receiving the lowly is receiving Him.
Dear sister, perhaps much of what you do is hidden and unseen. Perhaps comparison has made your heart tired. But today the Lord gently reminds you: humble love is never small in His eyes, and faithful service is never forgotten by Him.
May we no longer be trapped by the question, “Who is more important?” Instead, in daily life, may we learn to notice those who need love. May you become a gentle, steady, loving woman who welcomes others because the Lord has first welcomed you.
🎉🎉 Congratulations on completing today's devotion! 🎉🎉
