September 21: Matthew 24:42-51: Watch and Wait for the Lord’s Return
Women’s Bible Reading Plan Day 264. Today we read Matthew 24:42-51. The theme is “Watch and Wait for the Lord’s Return.” Through Jesus’ teaching on watchfulness and faithfulness, we learn how to prepare our hearts in ordinary days and live faithfully before the Lord. This page includes Matthew 24:42-51 Scripture, devotional reflection, meditation questions, a daily devotional verse, prayer, and life application.
Many times, we think spiritual preparation happens only in special moments: a retreat, a worship service, a major decision, or a turning point in life. But in Matthew 24, Jesus reminds us that true watchfulness is often lived out in the most ordinary days.
Cooking, working, caring for family, handling relationships, facing pressure, and carrying daily responsibilities may seem small, but they reveal whether our hearts are ready before the Lord. Waiting for Jesus’ return does not mean anxiously guessing the date. It means loving Him, obeying Him, and serving faithfully today.
In Matthew 24:42-51, Jesus tells His disciples, “Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.” Since no one knows the day of the Lord’s return, the most important response is not to predict the time, but to stay ready.
Jesus uses the picture of a householder watching against a thief to show the importance of spiritual alertness. A believer’s life should be marked by readiness, not fear; faithfulness, not carelessness.
Then Jesus speaks of the faithful and wise servant. The one who is truly ready is not someone who only says she is waiting for the Lord, but someone who continues to serve faithfully while the Master is away. She cares for what has been entrusted to her and treats others with wisdom and love.
Today’s theme, “Watch and Wait for the Lord’s Return,” reminds us that waiting for Jesus is not separate from daily life. Dear sisters, we can be watchful in our homes, relationships, work, service, words, and thoughts. May we not wait for a special moment to take the Lord seriously, but prepare our hearts today.
1 Jesus says, “Watch therefore.” Is your spiritual heart awake and longing for the Lord, or has it become tired, distracted, or delayed?
2 If the Lord looked at your life today, where would you most want Him to see faithfulness: family, work, service, time, words, or relationships?
3 The evil servant’s problem was that he thought his lord delayed his coming. Have you ever delayed obedience, prayer, repentance, or response to God because you thought there would be more time later?
4 What small thing can you do today to show that you are watching and waiting for the Lord?
Today, let us enter Matthew 24:42-51 with these questions. Do not see the Lord’s return only as something far away in the future. Let it shape how you live today: how you use your time, how you treat others, and how you stay faithful in what the Lord has placed in your hands.
Let us take a quiet moment and bring our weariness, delay, distraction, and lukewarmness before the Lord. Then let us begin today’s reading together.
“Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.”
— Matthew 24:44
42 Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.
43 But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up.
44 Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.
45 Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season?
46 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.
47 Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods.
48 But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming;
49 And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken;
50 The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of,
51 And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
✨ Thank you for walking through today’s Scripture with us, dear sister.
Matthew 24:42-51 reminds us that the Lord will surely return, though we do not know the day or the hour. Jesus calls us to watchfulness—not to live in fear, but to prepare our hearts faithfully in ordinary days. Now let us bring our hearts before God and ask Him to help us wait with faith, wisdom, and love.

Ask the Lord to Awaken a Watchful Heart
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me that Jesus will come again. Please do not let me become numb in the busyness of life, or so focused on today’s plans that I forget I belong to You.
Lord, awaken my heart. Help me remember You in daily life, honor You in my choices, please You with my words, and live before You even when no one else sees. Help me not only know the truth, but respond to You today. Amen.
✨
Ask the Lord to Help Me Be Faithful with What He Has Entrusted to Me
Lord, You call the faithful servant wise because he continues to serve while his master is away. Help me cherish the responsibilities You have placed in my hands, whether in my family, work, church, or relationships.
When I feel tired, unseen, or stuck in repeated tasks, remind me that You see my faithfulness. Let me serve not for human praise, but because I love You. May even the small things I do today become part of my preparation for Your return. Amen.

Ask the Lord to Keep Me from Delaying Obedience
Heavenly Father, the evil servant thought his lord was delaying, so he became careless and harsh. Please guard my heart from saying, “I will obey later.”
If You are asking me today to repent, forgive, let go, reorder my life, return to prayer, or draw near to You again, give me courage to respond now. Do not let me delay my spiritual life until tomorrow. Help me turn back today, obey today, and come closer to You today. Amen.

Interceding for Sisters
Lord, I also pray for the sisters around me. Many carry heavy responsibilities every day and are so busy caring for others that they hardly have time to care for their own hearts. Meet them in their ordinary days and remind them that You are with them.
May every sister live watchfully in her home, workplace, service, and relationships—not by her own strength, but by Your grace. Give her strength, wisdom, and a gentle heart, so she may shine for You in the middle of daily life. Amen.
After reading Matthew 24:42-51, we see that watching for the Lord’s return is not about guessing dates or living in fear. It is about being faithful today.
Dear sister, maybe today feels very ordinary: there is work to do, family to care for, messages to answer, and responsibilities to carry. But right in these ordinary moments, you can choose to love the Lord, obey Him, depend on Him, and treat others with faithfulness and grace.
May today’s Scripture remind you: do not wait for a special day to follow the Lord seriously. Today, prepare your heart. Today, be faithful with what is in your hands. Today, live as one who is waiting for Jesus to come again.
🎉🎉 Congratulations on completing today's devotion! 🎉🎉
