September 20: Matthew 23:1-12: Whoever Humbles Himself Shall Be Exalted
Women’s Bible Reading Plan Day 263. Today we read Matthew 23:1-12. The theme is “Whoever Humbles Himself Shall Be Exalted.” Jesus warns us to turn away from vanity, outward religion, and the desire to be praised by others. He calls us to serve with a humble heart. This page includes Matthew 23:1-12 Scripture, devotional reflection, meditation questions, a daily devotional verse, prayer, and life application.
We all long to be seen, appreciated, and valued. A kind word, a compliment, or someone’s approval can make us feel that our efforts matter. But in Matthew 23, Jesus gently brings us back to a deeper truth: a life that pleases God is not built on looking spiritual before people, but on walking humbly before Him.
The scribes and Pharisees loved places of honor. They enjoyed being greeted with respect and being called by important titles. They said many right things, but did not live them out. Their religion looked impressive on the outside, but their hearts were far from true humility.
For us as sisters, this passage can speak very closely to daily life. In our families, friendships, work, church service, or ministry, we may quietly feel pressure to prove that we are capable, spiritual, helpful, or strong. Yet Jesus invites us into freedom: we do not need to build our worth on people’s praise. The Father sees the quiet, humble heart that serves in love.
In Matthew 23:1-12, Jesus warns the crowds and His disciples about the example of the scribes and Pharisees. They sat in Moses’ seat and taught the law, but they often did not practice what they taught. They placed heavy burdens on others, yet were unwilling to help carry them.
Jesus points out that many of their actions were done “to be seen of men.” They loved honor, attention, titles, and places of importance. Outwardly, they appeared religious, but inwardly, pride and self-exaltation were quietly ruling their hearts.
Then Jesus shows His disciples a different way. Greatness in God’s kingdom is not about standing above others, but about serving others. The one who humbles herself before God is the one God sees, lifts, and honors in His time.
Today’s theme, “Whoever Humbles Himself Shall Be Exalted,” reminds us that God values humility more than appearance, obedience more than image, and loving service more than human applause.
1 Jesus says that the Pharisees “say, and do not.” Are there truths you know well, but still struggle to live out in daily life?
2 The Pharisees loved to be seen and honored. In your family, work, friendships, or church service, do you find yourself caring too much about how others see you?
3 Have you recently felt tired, hurt, or anxious because you were trying to prove yourself?
4 Jesus says, “He that is greatest among you shall be your servant.” What is one simple, sincere way you can serve someone today without seeking attention or reward?
Today, let us read Matthew 23:1-12 with open hearts. Instead of only noticing the pride of the Pharisees, let us allow Jesus to reveal the hidden pride, comparison, and desire for approval within us.
Let us take a quiet moment and bring to the Lord our need to be noticed, praised, and admired. Then let us begin today’s reading together.
“And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.”
— Matthew 23:12
23 Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,
2 Saying The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat:
3 All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.
4 For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.
5 But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,
6 And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,
7 And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.
9 And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.
10 Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.
11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.
12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.
✨ Thank you for walking through today’s Scripture with us, dear sister.
Matthew 23:1-12 reminds us that God is not looking for outward religious performance, but for a truly humble heart. Jesus calls us away from vanity, comparison, and self-exaltation, and invites us to serve others with love. Now let us bring our hearts before God and ask Him to cleanse our hidden pride and give us a gentle, humble spirit.

Ask the Lord to Cleanse My Desire to Be Seen
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me that true godliness is not lived for people’s eyes, but before You. I confess that I sometimes care too much about how others see me. I want to be praised, appreciated, needed, and noticed. When I am not seen, I can feel disappointed or hurt.
Please cleanse my heart from vanity and comparison. Help me stop measuring my worth by people’s opinions. Remind me that You already see me, know me, and love me. Amen.
✨
Ask the Lord to Help Me Live What I Know
Lord, the warning that the Pharisees “say, and do not” also speaks to me. I may know I should be humble, yet still want to defend myself. I may know I should forgive, yet still hold on to hurt. I may know I should trust You, yet still let anxiety guide my heart.
Help me not only to know Your truth, but to live it. Let Your Word shape my speech, attitude, relationships, and choices. May my faith not only look good on the outside, but become real in ordinary life. Amen.

Ask the Lord for a Humble Heart to Serve
Lord Jesus, You said, “He that is greatest among you shall be your servant.” Please place that heart within me. Help me not to use service as a way to prove myself, but as a response of love to You.
In my home, church, work, and relationships, teach me to be more thoughtful, more patient, more willing to listen, and more willing to do quiet things that may not be noticed by others but are pleasing to You. Amen.

Interceding for Sisters
Heavenly Father, I also pray for the sisters around me. Many carry so much every day and feel pressure to do everything well. Some fear they are not enough. Some feel compared. Some are hurt because they are not understood. Some are tired in serving, yet afraid to stop.
Lord, comfort them with Your love. Let every sister know that her worth is not found in human praise, but in Your eyes. Set us free from comparison and vanity, and give us humble, steady, and peaceful hearts. Amen.
After reading Matthew 23:1-12, we are reminded that God is not pleased with spiritual performance. He delights in a humble and sincere heart. People may notice titles, positions, words, and outward success, but God sees our motives, attitudes, and hidden obedience.
Dear sister, you do not need to prove your worth through performance, and you do not need people’s praise to know you are valuable. Your Father sees you, knows you, and loves you.
May today’s Scripture remind you: in God’s kingdom, true honor does not come from lifting ourselves up, but from humbling ourselves before Him. Whoever humbles herself, the Lord will lift up in His time.
🎉🎉 Congratulations on completing today's devotion! 🎉🎉
