September 22: Matthew 25:1-13: The Watchfulness of the Ten Virgins
September 22: Matthew 25:1-13: The Watchfulness of the Ten Virgins
Women’s Bible Reading Plan Day 265. Today we read Matthew 25:1-13. The theme is “The Watchfulness of the Ten Virgins.” Through Jesus’ parable, we learn to prepare oil in our vessels and wait faithfully for the coming of the Bridegroom. This page includes Matthew 25:1-13 Scripture, devotional reflection, meditation questions, a daily devotional verse, prayer, and life application.
Waiting is not always easy. We wait for an answer, a change, a healing, a restored relationship, or God’s timing to become clear. When the waiting feels long, our hearts can grow tired, and our watchfulness can quietly fade.
In Matthew 25, Jesus tells the parable of ten virgins who take their lamps and go out to meet the bridegroom. They all look ready. They all have lamps. But the wise virgins prepare oil in their vessels, while the foolish ones do not. When the bridegroom delays, they all become drowsy and fall asleep. But at midnight, when the cry is heard, their true preparation is revealed.
This parable reminds us that spiritual life cannot depend only on outward appearance or temporary passion. Sisters, we need to ask ourselves: Is my lamp still burning? Is there real faith, prayer, love for the Lord, and obedience within me? When the Bridegroom comes, will I be ready to meet Him?
Matthew 25:1-13 records the parable of the ten virgins. They all take their lamps and go out to meet the bridegroom, but five are wise and five are foolish. The foolish take their lamps but do not take oil with them. The wise take oil in their vessels with their lamps.
The point of this parable is not who looks more spiritual on the outside, but whether there is real preparation within. A lamp can be seen by others, but oil is kept in the vessel. Outward service, church attendance, Bible knowledge, and spiritual habits may be visible, but the hidden life of love, trust, obedience, and watchfulness before the Lord is known by God.
When the bridegroom delays, all ten virgins become drowsy and sleep. Jesus understands human weakness. He knows waiting can make us tired. Yet when the midnight cry comes—“Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him”—borrowed oil is no longer enough. Spiritual life cannot be borrowed from others, and it cannot be prepared at the last moment.
Today’s theme, “The Watchfulness of the Ten Virgins,” invites us to examine ourselves: Am I holding a lamp without preparing oil? Do I have an outward faith, but lack a true inner life with the Lord? May we draw near to Him in ordinary days, love Him, obey Him, and prepare oil in our vessels as we wait for the Bridegroom to come.
1 The ten virgins all took their lamps to meet the bridegroom. In your faith life, what are the “lamps” that others can see—church attendance, service, Bible reading habits, spiritual knowledge, or an outward identity?
2 The wise virgins prepared oil. What is the “oil” in your life that others may not see, but God sees? Is it honest prayer, trust in difficulty, quiet obedience, or a love for the Lord that has not grown cold?
3 When the bridegroom delayed, all the virgins became drowsy and slept. Have you felt tired in a season of waiting? What has made your heart less watchful or less sensitive to the Lord?
4 When the midnight cry came, the foolish virgins realized their oil was not enough. What is one small spiritual preparation you can make today? Perhaps returning to prayer, reordering your priorities, coming back to God’s Word, or obeying something the Lord has already shown you.
Today, let us enter Matthew 25:1-13 with these questions. Do not only ask whether you still have a lamp; also ask whether there is oil in your vessel.
Let us take a quiet moment and bring our tiredness, distractions, and spiritual carelessness before the Lord. Then let us begin today’s reading together.
“Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.”
— Matthew 25:13
25 Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.
2 And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.
3 They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them:
4 But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.
5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.
6 And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.
7 Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.
8 And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.
9 But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.
10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut.
11 Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us.
12 But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.
13 Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.
✨ Thank you for walking through today’s Scripture with us, dear sister.
Matthew 25:1-13 reminds us that true preparation is not only holding a lamp outwardly, but having oil within. Jesus calls us to stay watchful as we wait, not letting faith remain only in outward form, but learning to love Him, draw near to Him, and obey Him in daily life. Now let us bring our hearts before God and ask Him to make us sisters who have oil in our vessels.

Ask the Lord to Keep Me from Having Only an Outward Lamp
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me through the parable of the ten virgins that an outward lamp does not always mean there is oil within. I may attend church, read Scripture, serve, and speak spiritual words, yet still drift away from true closeness with You.
Lord, shine Your light on my heart. Do not let me be satisfied with the appearance of faith. If I have become tired, cold, or distracted, gently awaken me. Bring me back to You—not to impress others, but because I truly need You and truly love You. Amen.
✨
Ask the Lord to Help Me Prepare While I Wait
Lord, waiting often tests my heart. When I am waiting for answers, change, breakthrough, or Your promises to unfold, I can become discouraged and less watchful. But You remind me that I do not control the time of the Bridegroom’s coming. What I can do is prepare faithfully today.
Help me prepare oil in ordinary days: to draw near to You in prayer, listen to Your voice in Scripture, obey You in my choices, trust You under pressure, and honor You even when no one sees. May my life not be rushed at the last moment, but renewed by You little by little each day. Amen.

Ask the Lord to Awaken Watchfulness in Me
Heavenly Father, Jesus said, “Watch therefore.” I confess that busyness, phone distractions, people’s expectations, family responsibilities, and inner worries can slowly make me spiritually dull. I may not walk away from You all at once, but I can gradually become used to living as if I do not need You.
Awaken my heart, Lord. Help me not to treat Your grace as ordinary or tomorrow as guaranteed. Teach me to treasure today—the chance to draw near, repent, obey, love, and serve You. Let me wait for You each day with hope. Amen.

Interceding for Sisters
Heavenly Father, I also pray for the sisters around me. Many are trying hard to live, serve, love their families, and follow You, yet their hearts may be tired. Please strengthen them. Let them not depend only on outward strength, but receive fresh oil from You.
May every sister be comforted in prayer, renewed through Your Word, and kept from losing heart while she waits. Help us remind and support one another, so we may be women who watch and wait for You with faith. Amen.
After reading Matthew 25:1-13, we see that all ten virgins had lamps and were waiting for the bridegroom. The real difference was whether they had prepared oil. The lamp reminds us of outward faith; the oil reminds us of the hidden life that is truly connected to the Lord.
Dear sister, today the Lord gently reminds us: do not only care about the lamp others can see; pay attention to the oil within your heart. Do not only maintain spiritual habits in busyness, but truly draw near to the Lord in quietness. Do not wait until the last moment to prepare; let the Lord renew your heart today.
May you continue preparing yourself for the Lord in ordinary days. Let your lamp shine, and let there be oil in your vessel, as you wait quietly, faithfully, and hopefully for the Bridegroom to come.
