Day 122 of the Women’s Bible Plan: Read Proverbs 6:20-35 and reflect on the call to listen to instruction and flee from the sin that destroys families. Through this passage, we are reminded to guard our hearts, eyes, steps, and relationships, and to cherish the holiness of marriage before God.
Marriage is not sustained by emotion alone, nor protected only by outward responsibility. Marriage must be guarded day by day—in our thoughts, eyes, words, boundaries, and choices—as we return again and again to the wisdom of God.
Proverbs 6:20-35 is a serious and deeply practical passage. It does not speak lightly about temptation. It warns directly that adultery brings deep destruction. It wounds marriage, tears families apart, defiles the conscience, and brings consequences that cannot be easily erased.
This passage begins by calling us to keep the commandments and instruction given by godly wisdom. True protection from sin is not built only on last-minute willpower. It is formed by a heart shaped daily by God’s Word. Whether we stand firm in temptation often depends on how we have listened to instruction, valued truth, and built boundaries long before the moment of testing comes.
Proverbs 6:20-35 begins with a father’s exhortation: “My son, keep thy father’s commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother.” This instruction is not a cold rule, but wisdom filled with love and protection. The teaching of parents, the warnings of God’s Word, and the counsel of a spiritual community can become a lamp, a light, and a way of life, keeping us from losing our way in darkness.
The passage then gives a direct warning to stay away from the temptation of the strange woman. It reminds us not to lust after her beauty in the heart, nor to let her capture us with her eyes. Sin usually does not destroy a person all at once. It first attracts the eyes, stirs the imagination, dulls alertness, and slowly leads the heart toward destruction.
This passage also uses strong images: “Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned?” and “Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned?” The meaning is clear: some temptations cannot be handled by saying, “It is fine if I stay close.” The temptation of adultery is not a fire to play with. It burns lives, damages relationships, and brings painful consequences to families.
For sisters, this passage does not only warn against physical adultery or outward sin. It also calls us to guard the faithfulness of the heart. Many cracks do not begin with obvious actions. They may begin with unmet longings, unaddressed loneliness, unclear boundaries, overly intimate conversations, hidden emotional dependence, secret fantasy, or attention that slowly becomes inappropriate.
Today’s theme, “Fleeing the Temptation of Adultery,” is not meant to make us live in fear or shame. Rather, it invites us to return to God’s wisdom, take seriously the destructive power of sin, and cherish the holiness of marriage and family. God’s Word is not given to crush us, but to protect us from paths that may seem sweet at first yet lead to deep harm.
1 Proverbs teaches us to bind instruction continually upon the heart, so that it may lead us when we go, keep us when we sleep, and talk with us when we awake. Are you allowing God’s Word to truly shape your thoughts, eyes, emotions, and relational choices? Or do you only seek wisdom when a problem has already become serious?
2 The passage warns not to lust after her beauty in the heart or be taken by her eyes. Today, temptation may come not only through a person in real life, but also through social media, entertainment, private messages, emotional dependence, or online flirtation. Are there places in your life where you need to set clear boundaries and stop drawing near?
3 This passage reminds us that adultery brings far-reaching harm. Do you truly believe that hidden sin does not affect only one person, but also marriage, family, children, church witness, and one’s relationship with God? Is God inviting you today to guard your heart seriously and protect your family with love?
As you read Proverbs 6:20-35 today, do not see this passage only as a warning for someone else. Let it become protection for your own heart. May God use His Word to make us clear-minded in temptation, wise in relationships, faithful in marriage, and reverent before Him in our homes.
Take a quiet breath before you begin. Bring your thoughts, eyes, relationships, marriage, weaknesses, and boundaries before the Lord, and let His Word meet you there.
“For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life.”
— Proverbs 6:23
20 My son, keep thy father's commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
21 Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck.
22 When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.
23 For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:
24 To keep thee from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman.
25 Lust not after her beauty in thine heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids.
26 For by means of a whorish woman a man is brought to a piece of bread: and the adultress will hunt for the precious life.
27 Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned?
28 Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned?
29 So he that goeth in to his neighbour's wife; whosoever toucheth her shall not be innocent.
30 Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry;
31 But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house.
32 But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.
33 A wound and dishonour shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away.
34 For jealousy is the rage of a man: therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance.
35 He will not regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts.
✨ Thank you for walking through today’s Scripture with us, dear sister.
Proverbs 6:20-35 solemnly reminds us to listen to instruction and flee from the temptation of adultery, so that sin will not destroy marriage, family, and life. God’s Word is like a lamp, a light, and the way of life. It can guard us when we walk, lie down, and rise again. Now, let us bring our hearts, eyes, emotions, marriages, and relational boundaries before the Lord in prayer.

Letting God’s Word Become the Lamp of My Heart
Father, thank You for reminding me through Proverbs that the commandment is a lamp, the law is light, and reproofs of instruction are the way of life. Your Word is not meant to restrict me, but to protect me, so that I will not lose my way in darkness or be deceived by the sweet words of sin.
Lord, help me truly love Your Word. Do not let me seek wisdom only in times of crisis, and do not let me treat spiritual warnings as something easy to ignore. Let Your truth enter my thoughts, eyes, emotions, phone use, social relationships, and daily choices. May Your Word lead me when I walk, keep me when I lie down, and speak with me when I awake. Before temptation comes, may my heart already be filled with Your light. Amen.

Setting Clear Boundaries in the Face of Temptation
Lord, this passage reminds me that sin often begins with the eyes, imagination, and desire of the heart. Many forms of destruction do not happen suddenly, but slowly grow through repeated moments of not refusing, not setting boundaries, and not staying alert. Help me not to deceive myself before temptation by saying, “It is only a conversation,” “It is only something I look at,” “It is only in my thoughts,” or “It will never really happen.”
Give me a clear mind and decisive action. If there is an inappropriate relationship, help me stop drawing near. If there are flirtatious words, help me cut them off. If there is impure content, help me turn away. If there are hidden fantasies or emotional dependence, shine Your light on me so that I am willing to repent and seek help. Lord, protect my heart, and do not let a small opening become deep damage to my life and home. Amen.
🧑🧑🧒🧒
Father, I also pray for the sisters and families around me. You know how many marriages are under pressure: less communication, emotional distance, temptations from phones and the internet, neglect caused by busy work, and coldness that grows from old wounds. Some sisters are painfully facing betrayal, suspicion, temptation, or cracks in a relationship.
Lord, protect them personally. Give them wisdom to discern danger and courage to face real problems. If someone is standing near the edge of temptation, please stop them in time. If someone has already been wounded, bring comfort and healing. If a marriage is breaking, raise up the right help, counseling, shepherding, and support. Help us as sisters not to spread gossip, but to watch over one another with prayer, truth, and love. Amen.

Praying for Broken Marriages and Wounded Families
Compassionate God, I also pray for the many broken marriages, wounded families, and people harmed by sexual sin in this world. We see how this generation often dresses unfaithfulness as romance, lust as freedom, and things that destroy families as light entertainment. Many are wounded, children carry brokenness, homes lose safety, and hearts become increasingly numb.
Lord, have mercy on this generation. Let Your truth shine again into human hearts, so that people may see that holiness is not bondage, but protection; faithfulness is not outdated, but the foundation of love. Heal those who have been betrayed, restore those trapped in sin, protect young children, and strengthen those who desire to keep covenant and guard their homes. May the Church become a place that protects marriage, heals wounds, and speaks truth with grace. Amen.
After reading Proverbs 6:20-35, we see that God’s Word speaks with great honesty: adultery is not a small matter, temptation is not a game, and hidden sin does not come without consequences. It may begin with a look, a conversation, a fantasy, or a relationship without boundaries, but step by step it can wound the conscience, marriage, family, and one’s relationship with God.
As we close this page and return to real life, perhaps the temptation we face is not an obvious affair, but untreated loneliness, long-held disappointment, online flirtation, misplaced emotional dependence, or tolerance of impure content. Remember this: God’s Word does not come today to condemn us, but to awaken us, protect us, and guide us back to the way of life.
May today’s Scripture remind you not to take boundaries lightly and not to take God’s Word lightly. May the commandment become the lamp of your heart, and the law become the light for your steps. In every relationship and choice, may you guard purity, faithfulness, and reverence. May God Himself protect your heart and protect your home.
