Day 233 of the Women’s Bible Plan: Read Matthew 6:1-4 and listen to Jesus’ teaching about giving, service, and hidden motives. Today’s theme is “Giving in Secret,” reminding us that true service is not done for human praise, but in faithfulness before the Father who sees in secret. This page includes Matthew 6:1-4 Scripture, a devotional guide to the words of Jesus, reflection questions, a daily verse, prayer, and life application.
Some acts of service are easy for others to notice: a generous gift, a warm word of encouragement, a timely act of help, a task completed with great effort. When others notice, thank us, or affirm us, our hearts naturally feel encouraged. But in Matthew Chapter 6, the Lord Jesus reminds us that the deeper question is not only, “Did I do something good?” but also, “Why did I do it?”
Jesus is not against giving. He is not against helping those in need. He is looking at the heart. If we do good only to be seen, praised, or thought spiritual by others, then even outwardly beautiful service can slowly become self-display. But when we are willing to be faithful in secret, bringing our love, mercy, and generosity before the Father, even if no one else knows, the Father sees.
Today, we listen to the words of Jesus and allow Him to shine His light on the motives behind our service. May He teach us again to serve for God alone, even beyond human applause, and to love faithfully in places where no one may notice.
Matthew 6:1-4 is part of the Sermon on the Mount. In this passage, Jesus warns His disciples, “Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them.” He then speaks specifically about giving: do not be like the hypocrites who sound a trumpet in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may have glory of men.
Jesus’ words are very direct. He shows us that a person can do the right thing with the wrong motive. Giving to the poor is meant to be an act of mercy and love. It is a good work that pleases God. But when people turn giving into a stage for displaying their godliness, generosity, or spiritual image, the act loses its simplicity. If someone only wants human praise, Jesus says, they have their reward.
Then the Lord says, “But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth.” This does not mean we must become secretive in an artificial way, or that no good work should ever be known by anyone. Rather, Jesus is reminding us that true service does not need to be constantly displayed. It does not need human applause in order to have value. A person who belongs to God can give quietly, support others in silence, and love faithfully where no one is watching.
This passage is also a deep comfort to many who serve quietly. Perhaps you have given much in your home for a long time and have rarely been thanked. Perhaps you have done much behind the scenes in church or ministry and have seldom been noticed. Perhaps you have helped, prayed, given, welcomed, or accompanied others, and few people know the cost. But Jesus says, “thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.” The Father sees every true act of love and remembers every hidden faithfulness.
Today’s theme, “Giving in Secret,” invites us to reflect: When I serve others, do I care most about God’s pleasure or human approval? When no one praises, notices, or remembers, am I still willing to faithfully do what pleases God? May the words of Jesus free us from the burden of pleasing people, proving ourselves, or chasing applause, and bring us back to a simple life of loving God and loving others.
1 Jesus says we should not do our good works before others in order to be seen by them. When you serve, give, help, or show love, do you sometimes care deeply about whether others notice, thank, or affirm you? How does this passage help you examine your motives again?
2 “Let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth” reminds us that true love does not need to be announced. Is there something God is calling you to do faithfully in secret? Perhaps caring for family, praying for someone, quietly helping a person in need, or choosing goodness where no one is watching.
3 Jesus says the Father sees in secret and will reward. Have you ever felt hurt, tired, or discouraged because your long, quiet service was unseen by others? Could God be reminding you today that human neglect does not mean He has not seen?
As you read Matthew 6:1-4 today, do not see this passage only as a teaching about money or giving. Let it also shine light on the heart behind all our service and good works. A truly heavenly life is not about creating a religious image before people, but about living with real faithfulness before the Father.
Take a quiet breath before you begin. Bring before the Lord the part of your heart that wants to be seen, wants to be affirmed, and fears being forgotten. Let us listen together to the words of Jesus today.
“That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.”
— Matthew 6:4
6 Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.
2 Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
3 But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:
4 That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.
✨ Thank you for walking through today’s Scripture with us, dear sister.
Matthew 6:1-4 lets us hear the Lord Jesus’ teaching about giving and motives. He does not call us to stop doing good. He calls us not to serve for human praise, and not to turn acts of mercy into a stage for self-glory. Now, let us bring our service, giving, acts of love, and hidden motives before the Father in prayer.

Asking the Lord to Purify My Motives
Father, thank You for reminding me through the words of Jesus that outward good works must be carried by a true heart within. Many times, I do want to help, serve, and love others. Yet I also confess that my heart longs to be seen, thanked, and affirmed. Sometimes after doing even a small thing, I hope others will know. Sometimes when I receive no response, I feel hurt inside.
Lord, shine Your light on me gently and purify me. Let me not serve to build my own image or give in order to prove my worth. Free me from living under the eyes of people. Teach me to love others simply because I love You, to show mercy because You delight in mercy, and to be faithful because You have entrusted this work to me. Amen.
✨
Being Faithful in Hidden Goodness
Lord, You said that giving should be done in secret, because the Father sees in secret. Help me treasure the acts of service that no one sees: repeated labor at home, unknown prayers, quiet help, gentle companionship, hidden giving, and perseverance without applause.
When I feel that these things are too small, too ordinary, or too easily forgotten, remind me that nothing done from love and faith is wasted before You. Keep me from despising hidden faithfulness. Keep me from stopping love simply because I am not praised. Give me a simple heart, so that in the place You have arranged for me, I may live out goodness quietly, truly, and steadily. Amen.
🧑🧑🧒🧒
Set Free from Human Applause
Father, I confess that human praise can easily become a chain around my heart. When I am affirmed, I can become proud. When I am overlooked, I can become discouraged. When I am misunderstood, I can become wounded. Lord, help me build my worth again in You, not in how others see me, evaluate me, or remember me.
Teach me to be steady before You. If someone thanks me, make me humble and turn the glory back to You. If no one sees me, help me rejoice because You see. If I am misunderstood, help me not rush to defend myself, but first examine my heart and continue walking faithfully in the way that pleases You. Amen.
🌍
Interceding for Families
Father, I also pray for many sisters around me who serve quietly. Some care for family members day after day. Some serve behind the scenes in church. Some pray for others without announcing it. Some give, welcome, accompany, and comfort in private, with very few people knowing. You see their labor, and You know that sometimes they feel tired, lonely, or unsure whether what they do has meaning.
Lord, strengthen them personally. Let them know that their hidden faithfulness has not been overlooked by You. Comfort them with Your love, renew them through Your Word, and give encouragement and companions at the right time. Help us also to see, thank, and support one another. But even more, teach us together to fix our eyes on You. Amen.
After reading Matthew 6:1-4, we hear the gentle yet searching reminder of Jesus: good works are not only about outward action, but also about inward motive. People may see what we do, but they cannot always see our hearts. The Father sees not only what we have done, but also why we have done it.
As we close this page and return to daily life, perhaps today you will continue to do many small things no one notices: caring for family, finishing work, checking on someone, praying quietly, serving in hidden ways, or helping privately. Remember this: hidden faithfulness is not hidden from God. The Father sees in secret and remembers every act done from love and faith.
May the words of Jesus remind you today not to make human praise the goal of your service, and not to let human neglect steal your joy. May you remain faithful in secret, gentle in ordinary places, and willing to love when no one sees—because your Father sees, and He will reward according to His grace.
