Day 160 of the Women’s Bible Plan: Read Genesis 18:17-19 and reflect on Abraham’s family calling. In this passage, we see that family discipleship is not only about teaching children Bible stories, but also about leading the household to keep the way of the Lord by doing justice and judgment. This devotional helps women consider how faith is passed on through daily life, family example, spiritual guidance, righteousness, and fairness.
When we think about family faith formation, we may first think of reading the Bible with our children, teaching them to pray, taking them to Sunday school, or encouraging them to attend church. These are precious and important. But Genesis Chapter 18 shows us that God’s desire for Abraham’s household was not only that they would “know about faith,” but that they would “keep the way of the Lord, to do justice and judgment.”
Faith is passed down not only through what parents say, but also through what children see at home. Children see how we handle conflict, how we treat our spouse, how we speak, how we respond to money, how we care for the weak, how we choose honesty when things feel unfair, and how we still fear the Lord in busyness and pressure.
God chose Abraham not only to bless him as an individual, but also to bless the nations through his family. The home is not a side room of spiritual life. It is one of the most real, daily, and testing places of discipleship.
In Genesis 18:17-19, the Lord says, “Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do?” Then God speaks of Abraham becoming a great and mighty nation, and that all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him. After this, God explains why He has known Abraham: that Abraham may command his children and his household after him, and that they shall keep the way of the Lord, to do justice and judgment.
These verses are short, but they reveal the heart of family discipleship. God was not only concerned with Abraham’s personal faith. He also cared about how Abraham would lead the next generation and his whole household in the way of the Lord. Faith was not meant to remain only in Abraham’s private relationship with God. It was meant to enter his home, his children, his household, and the order of daily life.
To “command his children and his household” does not mean cold instruction or harsh control that produces outward religious behavior. It means Abraham was to take responsibility for spiritual leadership. He was to teach, remind, guide, and model the way of the Lord so that his household could know and walk in it.
God specifically mentions “justice and judgment.” This tells us that family discipleship is not merely the transfer of religious information. It is not only helping children memorize verses, sing songs, or attend church activities. True family discipleship shapes how children understand God, people, right and wrong, the vulnerable, responsibility, and fairness.
Today’s theme, “Abraham Shall Command His Children to Keep the Way of the Lord,” invites us to reflect: In our homes, is faith only a Sunday activity, or is it the way we live every day? Are we only concerned about our children’s grades, future, and safety, while forgetting whether they are learning justice, honesty, mercy, and the fear of the Lord? Are we willing to let our homes become places where the way of the Lord is learned, love is practiced, and justice and judgment are lived out?
1 God said Abraham would command his children and his household to keep the way of the Lord. How do you understand a parent’s responsibility in passing on faith at home? In your household, do your children or family members hear faith mostly from your words, or do they also see it through your life?
2 God specifically mentioned “justice and judgment.” How can justice and fairness be seen in family life? For example, how do parents handle conflict, admit mistakes, treat the weaker members of the family, and respond to money, promises, rules, and responsibilities?
3 Family discipleship does not always happen through formal lessons. It can happen at the dinner table, before bedtime, in the car, when a child makes a mistake, when a parent apologizes, or when the family faces difficulty. Are you willing to ask God to help you turn daily life into opportunities to lead your family in the way of the Lord?
As you read Genesis 18:17-19 today, let Abraham’s family calling remind you that the home does not exist only to keep daily life running. It is also a place where God entrusts us to pass on faith, practice justice, and live out fairness and mercy.
Take a quiet breath before you begin. Bring your family, children, role as a parent, marriage relationship, daily example, and spiritual responsibility before the Lord, and let His Word meet you there.
“For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment.”
— Genesis 18:19
17 And the Lord said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do;
18 Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?
19 For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the Lord, to do justice and judgment; that the Lord may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.
✨ Thank you for walking through today’s Scripture with us, dear sister.
Genesis 18:17-19 shows us that God chose Abraham not only to bless him personally, but also to pass on the way of the Lord through his household, so that his children and household would keep God’s way by doing justice and judgment. Now, let us bring our families, children, spiritual influence, and daily witness before the Lord in prayer.

Teaching the Way of the Lord in Daily Life
Lord, Abraham was to command his children and his household to keep Your way. Help me understand that teaching Your way is not only one formal family devotion, nor only how many verses a child can memorize. It is also the repeated turning of family hearts back to You in everyday life.
When children are confused, teach me to guide them with truth instead of only reacting with emotion. When conflict happens at home, help me respond with gentleness and honesty instead of hiding behind silence, anger, or control. When I make mistakes, give me humility to apologize and let my family see how a repentant person returns to You. May our home not only be a place where faith is talked about, but a place where faith is practiced. Amen.
✨
Learning Justice, Fairness, and Mercy at Home
Father, You specifically said that Abraham’s household should do justice and judgment. Remind me that children do not learn justice only from lessons. They also learn it from the atmosphere of the home. They see how I treat those who are weaker than I am, how I respond to unfairness, how I use authority, how I speak honestly, and how I handle money and promises.
Help me live out fairness and mercy at home. Keep me from showing partiality, ignoring real problems, using authority to pressure others, or choosing outward peace over truth. Teach me to discern right and wrong according to Your heart, and lead my family to care for the weak, show compassion to those who suffer, and honor every person made in Your image. May our home become a place where children learn justice, honesty, mercy, and responsibility. Amen.

Interceding for Families Around Me
Father, I also pray for the sisters around me who are raising children, leading families, caring for parents, or watching over the next generation. You know the many detailed and daily challenges they face: children’s personalities, schoolwork, emotions, online influences, family conflict, financial pressure, marriage communication, and their own weariness and limitations.
Lord, strengthen them. Do not let them feel that they must become perfect mothers, perfect wives, or perfect spiritual examples. Instead, help them keep returning to You even in imperfection. Give them wisdom, patience, courage, and a gentle heart. Help us as sisters support one another, not comparing children, not condemning families, but encouraging one another in the Lord, praying for one another, and learning together how to lead our families in Your way. Amen.

Praying for Families and the Next Generation
Compassionate God, I also pray for families and the next generation around the world. Many children are growing up in broken homes, unjust environments, violence, poverty, neglect, addiction, online harm, and confusing values. Many parents are also under pressure, feeling helpless and unsupported, not knowing how to lead their children in the way of righteousness.
Lord, have mercy on the families of this generation. Raise up parents, grandparents, teachers, pastors, and churches who fear You and watch over the next generation. Help more families learn truth, live out justice, and practice mercy. Protect children’s hearts from lies and darkness. May our homes not only be shelters for ourselves, but also places that bless our neighbors and witness to Your justice and love. Amen.
After reading Genesis 18:17-19, we see that God’s calling of Abraham was not only about his personal faith. It was also about how his household would pass on the way of the Lord. God desired him to command his children and household to keep the way of the Lord, to do justice and judgment. In other words, faith was not meant to remain only beside the altar. It was meant to enter the dinner table, the living room, the bedroom, parent-child conversations, family decisions, and every real choice of daily life.
As we close this page and return to our homes, perhaps our families are not perfect. There may be arguments, tiredness, pressure, challenges with children, and weaknesses in parents themselves. But remember this: family discipleship does not begin with perfection. It begins with returning to God again and again. When we are willing to live out truth at home, admit wrongs, practice fairness, show mercy to the weak, and remain honest, our children and family members can slowly see the reality of the Lord’s way in daily life.
May today’s Scripture remind you that your home can become a place where the way of the Lord is learned. Your life can become a classroom of faith. May God help you lead your family with a gentle and steady life, keeping the way of the Lord, doing justice and judgment in ordinary days.
