Day 107 of the Women’s Bible Plan: Read Leviticus Chapter 18 and reflect on God’s call for His people to be set apart in sexual relationships, marriage boundaries, and bodily holiness. This devotional helps women consider how God’s Word protects the dignity of the body, the faithfulness of marriage, the purity of relationships, and the holiness of His people in a world where boundaries are often blurred.
Some passages are not easy to read, yet they speak directly into real life. Leviticus Chapter 18 addresses many laws concerning sexual relationships and marriage boundaries. For modern readers, this chapter may feel serious, sensitive, or difficult to approach. But if we read it carefully, we see that God is not simply giving a list of restrictions. He is calling His people to come out from confusion and live as those who belong to Him.
Israel had lived in Egypt for many years and was preparing to enter the land of Canaan. God clearly told them not to follow the practices of Egypt or the practices of Canaan. In other words, God’s people were not to be led by the surrounding culture. In worship, family, marriage, the body, and intimate relationships, their lives were to show that they belonged to the LORD.
As we read this chapter today, we are not reading it with a spirit of legalism or condemnation toward others. Instead, we are asking again: To whom does my body belong? How does marriage reflect God’s holiness? Do my relational boundaries honor the Lord? When the world treats desire as freedom and boundaries as oppression, God invites His children to find protection in holiness, freedom in obedience, and His original beauty in marriage and intimacy.
Leviticus Chapter 18 records God’s holy instructions to Israel through Moses, especially concerning sexual relationships and marriage boundaries. At the beginning of the chapter, God says, “I am the LORD your God.” This is not merely an introduction. It is the foundation of the whole chapter. Because the LORD is their God, His people are to live according to His judgments and ordinances, not according to the customs of Egypt or Canaan.
This chapter repeatedly forbids uncovering the nakedness of close relatives and names many relationships that are not pleasing to God, including incestuous relationships, violations of the marriage covenant, and other acts that go against God’s holy order in creation. These laws show us that sexuality is not a small private matter without spiritual meaning. Sexual relationships involve the body, covenant, family, generations, worship, and holiness.
From the perspective of “Marriage and Husband-Wife Relationships,” Leviticus 18 reminds us that marriage cannot be sustained by feeling alone, nor can it be defined merely by cultural trends. Marriage is a holy relationship established by God, and it needs boundaries, faithfulness, reverence, and responsibility to protect it. When boundaries are torn down, relationships are wounded. When desire moves beyond the limits God has set, families and communities suffer harm.
For women, this chapter also reminds us that the body is not shameful, and it is not something to be used, exchanged, violated, or despised. God establishes boundaries in intimate relationships not to suppress human dignity, but to protect it. His commands guard the faithfulness of marriage, the stability of family, and the holiness of the community. Whether a woman is married, single, wounded by the past, or learning to build healthy relationships, God calls her to rediscover the dignity and holiness of the body before Him.
Today’s theme, “Laws for the Holiness of Marriage,” invites us to reflect: In a time when sexual values are confused, relational boundaries are blurred, and marriage is often treated lightly, are we willing to let God’s Word reshape our values? Holiness does not mean escaping real life. It means letting God reign in real life. Holiness is not a cold rule; it is God’s protection, healing, and belonging for His people.
1 God says, “I am the LORD your God.” This reminded Israel that their way of life was to be defined by God, not by the cultures of Egypt or Canaan. Today, in matters of marriage, sexuality, the body, and boundaries, are you more easily shaped by cultural trends, media, social networks, or other people’s opinions? Are you willing to let God’s Word recalibrate your values?
2 Leviticus Chapter 18 repeatedly warns against crossing the boundaries God has set for intimate relationships. In marriage, friendship, relationships with the opposite sex, online interaction, or emotional dependence, are there boundaries you need to rebuild or guard more carefully? Is God showing you that some “harmless” flirtation, dependence, temptation, or hidden relationship may be slowly eroding your heart?
3 God gives boundaries for sexuality and marriage to protect human dignity, family, and the holiness of the community. Have past experiences, wounds, shame, or wrong choices ever made you feel that you cannot come back before God? How does this chapter remind you that God not only calls His people to holiness, but also desires to heal, cleanse, and restore those who come to Him?
As you read Leviticus Chapter 18 today, do not see this chapter only as a list of severe prohibitions. Also see the protection and calling within it. God does not want His people to be swallowed by the confused values around them. He calls them to live as His holy people in body, marriage, family, and community.
Take a quiet breath before you begin. Bring your body, mind, relationships, marriage, boundaries, and past wounds before the Lord, and let His Word meet you there.
“I am the LORD your God.”
— Leviticus 18:2
18 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, I am the Lord your God.
3 After the doings of the land of Egypt, wherein ye dwelt, shall ye not do: and after the doings of the land of Canaan, whither I bring you, shall ye not do: neither shall ye walk in their ordinances.
4 Ye shall do my judgments, and keep mine ordinances, to walk therein: I am the Lord your God.
5 Ye shall therefore keep my statutes, and my judgments: which if a man do, he shall live in them: I am the Lord.
6 None of you shall approach to any that is near of kin to him, to uncover their nakedness: I am the Lord.
7 The nakedness of thy father, or the nakedness of thy mother, shalt thou not uncover: she is thy mother; thou shalt not uncover her nakedness.
8 The nakedness of thy father's wife shalt thou not uncover: it is thy father's nakedness.
9 The nakedness of thy sister, the daughter of thy father, or daughter of thy mother, whether she be born at home, or born abroad, even their nakedness thou shalt not uncover.
10 The nakedness of thy son's daughter, or of thy daughter's daughter, even their nakedness thou shalt not uncover: for theirs is thine own nakedness.
11 The nakedness of thy father's wife's daughter, begotten of thy father, she is thy sister, thou shalt not uncover her nakedness.
12 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy father's sister: she is thy father's near kinswoman.
13 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy mother's sister: for she is thy mother's near kinswoman.
14 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy father's brother, thou shalt not approach to his wife: she is thine aunt.
15 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy daughter in law: she is thy son's wife; thou shalt not uncover her nakedness.
16 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy brother's wife: it is thy brother's nakedness.
17 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of a woman and her daughter, neither shalt thou take her son's daughter, or her daughter's daughter, to uncover her nakedness; for they are her near kinswomen: it is wickedness.
18 Neither shalt thou take a wife to her sister, to vex her, to uncover her nakedness, beside the other in her life time.
19 Also thou shalt not approach unto a woman to uncover her nakedness, as long as she is put apart for her uncleanness.
20 Moreover thou shalt not lie carnally with thy neighbour's wife, to defile thyself with her.
21 And thou shalt not let any of thy seed pass through the fire to Molech, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the Lord.
22 Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.
23 Neither shalt thou lie with any beast to defile thyself therewith: neither shall any woman stand before a beast to lie down thereto: it is confusion.
24 Defile not ye yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the nations are defiled which I cast out before you:
25 And the land is defiled: therefore I do visit the iniquity thereof upon it, and the land itself vomiteth out her inhabitants.
26 Ye shall therefore keep my statutes and my judgments, and shall not commit any of these abominations; neither any of your own nation, nor any stranger that sojourneth among you:
27 (For all these abominations have the men of the land done, which were before you, and the land is defiled;)
28 That the land spue not you out also, when ye defile it, as it spued out the nations that were before you.
29 For whosoever shall commit any of these abominations, even the souls that commit them shall be cut off from among their people.
30 Therefore shall ye keep mine ordinance, that ye commit not any one of these abominable customs, which were committed before you, and that ye defile not yourselves therein: I am the Lord your God.
✨ Thank you for walking through today’s Scripture with us, dear sister.
Leviticus Chapter 18 shows us that God calls His people to be set apart in the body, sexual relationships, marriage boundaries, and family relationships. He does not desire His people to be bound by shame, but to be separated from confusion and brought into protection, healing, and freedom through His holiness. Now, let us bring our bodies, minds, relationships, marriages, and boundaries before the Lord in prayer.
🩷
Letting God’s Word Redefine My Body and Relationships
Father, thank You for reminding me through Leviticus Chapter 18 that You are a holy God, and You call Your people to be holy in real life. You care not only about my outward actions, but also about my body, my mind, my desires, my relationships, and my hidden choices.
Lord, help me not to let the world define my body or allow cultural trends to determine my relational boundaries. Teach me to see my body through Your eyes: not as something shameful, not as something that belongs carelessly to others, but as something You created, value, and call me to honor and protect. May my thoughts, words, online interactions, emotional attachments, and intimate relationships be increasingly governed by Your truth. Amen.
✨
Guarding Holy Boundaries in Marriage and Intimate Relationships
Lord, You establish boundaries in intimate relationships in order to protect people, not to oppress them. Help me see that boundaries are not the enemy of love, but the protection of love. Whether I am married, single, dating, or waiting for a suitable relationship, give me a heart that reveres You so that I will not treat holiness lightly in my emotions or my body.
If I am married, help me be faithful to the covenant and protect the relationship with honesty, devotion, respect, and love. If I am single or dating, help me not to compromise because of loneliness, the need to feel loved, or the fear of losing someone. If I am already in a relationship where boundaries have become unclear, give me courage to step back, adjust, seek help, and return to Your light. May my relationships not be led by desire, but guided by Your love and holiness. Amen.
🧑🧑🧒🧒
Father, I also pray for the sisters and families around me. You know that many people carry pressure in marriage and intimate relationships. Some have lost closeness and trust in marriage. Some are struggling with temptation. Some are being drained by unhealthy relationships. Some find it hard to trust love and safety again because of past wounds.
Lord, protect them, and protect our families and churches. May husbands and wives learn faithfulness, communication, respect, and forgiveness again. May single sisters not be pushed into compromise by loneliness. May the wounded receive healing, the bound receive freedom, and those in dangerous relationships have courage to seek help. Help us become a community of grace and truth—not crushing people with shame, but supporting one another with love, wisdom, and holiness. Amen.

Praying for a Broken World in Need of Holy Love
Compassionate God, I also pray for this world, where many people are wounded by sexual confusion, broken relationships, marital unfaithfulness, exploitation, violence, and abuse. Many suffer in a culture where desire is commercialized, bodies are despised, marriage is damaged, and families are torn apart. Many children, women, and vulnerable people are being harmed in hidden darkness.
Lord, have mercy on this world. Restrain evil, protect the vulnerable, heal the wounded, and raise up Your Church to be a safe, holy, and compassionate place. May families learn faithfulness again. May marriage be honored again. May human bodies no longer be used or violated. May the next generation be protected with truth, love, and healthy boundaries. Let Your holiness shine like light into darkness, showing people that true freedom is not indulgence, but being loved, protected, and renewed in You. Amen.
After reading Leviticus Chapter 18, we see that God is not merely giving a cold list of rules. He is calling His people to come out from confusion and live as those who belong to Him. He knows that when desire loses its boundaries, bodies are wounded, marriages are broken, families are shaken, and communities are defiled. So He says, “I am the LORD your God.” This reminds us that the foundation of holiness is not self-discipline alone, but belonging to God.
As we close this page and return to real life, perhaps you need to reconsider the boundaries of a relationship. Perhaps you need to pray for faithfulness and intimacy in marriage. Perhaps you need to bring past shame and wounds before God. Perhaps you need to step back bravely from a temptation. Remember this: God calls us to holiness not to take love away, but to protect love; not to deepen shame, but to bring cleansing and restoration.
May today’s Scripture remind you that your body is precious in God’s eyes, your relationships can be renewed by God, and your marriage—or future marriage—is worth guarding with holiness. May God help you live in this boundary-blurred age with a clean heart, a reverent spirit, and obedient steps as a beautiful witness that belongs to Him.
