September 2: Matthew 10:16-23: Wise as Serpents, Harmless as Doves
Day 245 of the Women’s Bible Plan: Read Matthew 10:16-23 and listen to the words of Jesus as He sends His disciples into difficult places of witness. Through His teaching to be “wise as serpents, and harmless as doves,” this devotional helps us learn how to rely on the guidance of the Holy Spirit in seasons of pressure, misunderstanding, opposition, and faithful testimony.
Following the Lord Jesus is not only about receiving comfort and peace. It also means being sent, bearing witness, and remaining faithful in places that are not always easy. Sometimes we may think faith means being gentle all the time, enduring everything silently, and never setting boundaries. At other times, we may think courage means pushing back strongly, arguing loudly, or proving ourselves.
But Jesus gives His disciples a deeper way.
He says, “Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.” These words are both realistic and wise. The Lord does not deny the danger of the world, nor does He ask His disciples to be naive about evil. Yet He also does not call them to answer the world in the world’s own spirit. He calls them to discernment in difficulty, purity under pressure, dependence on the Holy Spirit when misunderstood, and a Christlike witness even in opposition.
Matthew Chapter 10 records an important teaching as Jesus sends out the twelve disciples. He gives them authority, but He also tells them that the road ahead will not be easy. In today’s passage, Jesus especially warns them that they are being sent out like sheep in the midst of wolves. They will face human resistance, rejection, questioning, persecution, and even hostility from close relationships.
But Jesus does not leave His disciples only with fear. He gives them clear direction: “wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.” Wisdom is not deceit, and harmlessness is not weakness. To be wise is to have spiritual discernment—to know when to speak, how to respond, and how to avoid unnecessary danger. To be harmless is to keep a pure heart—not answering hatred with hatred, not returning evil for evil, and not allowing a difficult environment to make the heart hard, sharp, cunning, or bitter.
Jesus also tells His disciples that when they are delivered up before governors and kings to bear witness, they should not be anxious about how or what they shall speak. In that hour, it will be given to them what they should say, for it is not they who speak, but the Spirit of their Father speaking in them. This does not mean we never prepare. Rather, it reminds us that in the most tense, helpless, and uncertain moments, the Holy Spirit is still present with the children of God.
Today’s theme, “Wise as Serpents, Harmless as Doves,” invites us to reflect: In a complicated world, Christians are not called to be naive without wisdom, nor clever without purity. The Lord calls us to be clear-minded and gentle in our witness, discerning and loving, uncompromising yet free from bitterness. Whether in family, work, school, church, social media, or conversations with those who do not understand our faith, we need the Holy Spirit to teach us how to speak, how to be silent, how to stand, how to yield, and how to continue reflecting Christ under pressure.
1 Jesus said His disciples were being sent out like sheep in the midst of wolves. Have you ever felt pressure because of your faith, values, honesty, or conscience in a particular environment? How does this passage help you neither ignore real challenges naively nor abandon your witness out of fear?
2 “Wise as serpents, and harmless as doves” reminds us that we need both discernment and purity. Which side are you more likely to struggle with? Are you too quick to trust without boundaries and discernment, or too guarded, harsh, and easily hardened? How might the Lord be shaping your heart today?
3 Jesus promised that when His disciples were brought before others as witnesses, the Spirit would give them what to say. Are you facing a relationship, conversation, or pressure right now where you do not know how to respond? Are you willing to seek the Spirit’s guidance before speaking, instead of relying only on emotion, experience, or quick reaction?
As you read Matthew 10:16-23 today, do not see this passage only as a word about persecution in the disciples’ time. Let it also speak into our lives today. Everyone who belongs to the Lord is sent to bear witness in different settings. The Lord does not give us reckless courage or fearful silence, but a Spirit-led life of wisdom, gentleness, patience, and faithful testimony.
Take a quiet breath before you begin. Bring your pressures, complicated relationships, difficulty with words, and fear of bearing witness before the Lord, and let His Word meet you there.
“Be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.”
— Matthew 10:16
16 Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.
17 But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues;
18 And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles.
19 But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak.
20 For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.
21 And the brother shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the child: and the children shall rise up against their parents, and cause them to be put to death.
22 And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.
23 But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come.
✨ Thank you for walking through today’s Scripture with us, dear sister.
Matthew 10:16-23 lets us hear the Lord Jesus’ words to His sent disciples: the road ahead may include hardship, rejection, misunderstanding, and persecution, but they are not facing it alone. The Lord calls them to be wise as serpents and harmless as doves, and He promises that the Holy Spirit will give them words at the needed time. Now, let us bring our witness, fears, pressures, and situations that require wisdom before God in prayer.

Asking the Lord for Clear Spiritual Discernment
Father, thank You for reminding me through the words of Jesus that following You does not mean escaping the world, but bearing witness for You in a real and complicated world. Lord, You have not called me to ignore danger naively, nor to live every day in fear and suspicion. You call me to have clear discernment in You.
Please give me spiritual wisdom. Teach me when to speak and when to be quiet; when to stand firm and when to step back; what dangers I need to recognize, and what fears in my own heart I need to surrender. Do not let me replace spiritual wisdom with human cleverness, and do not let fear of conflict make me lose the convictions I should hold. In every situation, teach me to seek Your will first. Amen.
✨
Guarding a Gentle and Pure Heart
Lord, You said to be harmless as doves. Please guard my heart so that hardship, misunderstanding, rejection, or hurt will not make me bitter, sharp, cold, or hostile. So often, when I feel misunderstood, I want to explain myself, push back, or prove that I am right. When I feel offended, resentment can quietly build inside me.
Help me not to return evil for evil, not to answer sarcasm with sarcasm, and not to let another person’s attitude steal the gentleness I have in Christ. Let my gentleness not be weakness, my patience not be avoidance, and my silence not be fear. Let them come from the strength and self-control You give. May my life carry the fragrance of Christ even under pressure. Amen.

Asking the Holy Spirit to Guide My Words
Father, Jesus promised that when the disciples were brought before others as witnesses, they should not be anxious about what to say, because the Spirit of the Father would give them the words they needed. Lord, I confess that in many relationships and situations, I often do not know what to say. Sometimes I fear saying the wrong thing. Sometimes I speak too quickly. Sometimes I stay silent and later regret it.
Holy Spirit, guide my mouth. Help me be still before I speak, pray before I respond, and let Your love govern my words before I express myself. If I need to stand for truth, give me courage. If I need to explain gently, give me patience. If I need to stop arguing, give me self-control. May my words not simply try to win an argument, but bear witness to Christ, build others up, and glorify You. Amen.

Interceding for Sisters
Father, I also pray for the sisters around me who are bearing witness for You in difficult environments. Some are holding on to faith in families that do not believe. Some are facing conflicts of values in the workplace. Some are misunderstood because of their faith at school or in social circles. Some are under pressure, criticism, and weariness in ministry.
Lord, strengthen them. Give them spiritual wisdom so they will not be reckless or compromising. Give them gentle hearts so they will not become bitter or shrink back. Let them know that they are not alone. You see every gentle perseverance, every honest answer, every quiet endurance. Help us pray for and support one another, so that we do not walk the road of witness alone. Amen.
After reading Matthew 10:16-23, we hear Jesus speak honestly to His disciples: the way of being sent will not always be easy. Sheep among wolves must be watchful; yet those who belong to the Lord must not become wolves themselves. Jesus calls us to be wise as serpents and harmless as doves—to keep discernment in a complicated world and purity under pressure.
As we close this page and return to real life, perhaps you are in an environment where it is not easy to express your faith. Perhaps you are facing complicated relationships, conflicts of values, misunderstanding, or pressure. Remember this: you are not standing alone by your own cleverness or eloquence. The Holy Spirit is within you, guiding you, giving you words to speak, and teaching you when to be silent, when to be brave, and when to endure.
May today’s Scripture remind you not to replace wisdom with fear, or courage with harshness. May you live where the Lord has sent you with clarity but not cunning, gentleness but not weakness, caution but not retreat, relying on the Holy Spirit to bear witness with wisdom, grace, and hope.
