Day 109 of the Women’s Bible Plan: Read Ruth Chapter 2 and reflect on the relationship between Boaz and Ruth. Through Ruth gleaning in the field and Boaz treating her with respect, protection, and kindness, this devotional helps women consider how healthy relationships are built on kindness, honor, boundaries, responsibility, and the watchful care of God.
A relationship that truly feels safe is not built merely on romance at the beginning, nor on beautiful words alone. It is built on kindness, respect, protection, responsibility, and reverence for God.
Ruth Chapter 2 shows us the beginning of Ruth and Boaz’s relationship. Ruth was a Moabite woman who had followed her mother-in-law Naomi back to Bethlehem. She had no powerful status, no stable security, and no clear future. What she could do was go into the field and glean behind the reapers, working humbly and diligently to provide for herself and Naomi.
On one ordinary and difficult day, Ruth came to the field of Boaz. Boaz did not take advantage of her vulnerability. He did not look down on her because she was a foreign woman and a widow. He did not use his power to pressure her. Instead, he noticed her faithfulness, heard how she had cared for Naomi, and offered her protection, provision, and respect.
This chapter reminds us that a godly relationship does not begin with possession, but with kindness. It does not prove love through control, but protects the dignity of the other person through respect. It does not see only personal desire, but willingly carries appropriate responsibility before God.
Ruth Chapter 2 records how Ruth sought a way to provide for herself and Naomi by going into the fields to glean. According to God’s mercy in the law toward the poor, the widow, and the stranger, landowners were not to reap the corners of their fields completely or gather every leftover stalk. These were to be left for those in need. Ruth entered Boaz’s field within this space of grace.
When Boaz first appears, his life shows the character of a man who fears the Lord. He greets the reapers by saying, “The LORD be with you.” They answer him, “The LORD bless thee.” This is not a cold, oppressive, profit-driven workplace. It is a space where people acknowledge God, bless one another, and relate to one another with dignity.
When Boaz notices Ruth, he does not first look at her with suspicion or contempt. He asks who she is. After hearing how Ruth left her father, mother, and homeland to come with Naomi to an unfamiliar people, he blesses her, saying, “The LORD recompense thy work.” He also tells her not to glean in another field, but to stay close to his maidens. He commands the young men not to touch her and allows her to drink from the water drawn by his servants.
From the perspective of relationship, Boaz gives Ruth more than a cheap expression of interest. He offers protection with boundaries, provision with dignity, and kindness shaped by reverence for God. He does not treat Ruth’s vulnerable situation as an opportunity to take advantage of her. Instead, he gives her safety when she is exposed, strengthens her with his words, and helps her without turning help into control. In his field, Ruth can continue working with dignity, freedom, and security.
Ruth’s response is also precious. She is humble, diligent, grateful, and does not treat kindness as something she is entitled to. She bows down and asks why Boaz has shown favor to her, a foreigner. She receives help with clarity and thankfulness, continues to work diligently until evening, and brings what she has gathered back to Naomi.
Today’s theme, “Boaz and Ruth: A Relationship Shaped by Kindness,” invites us to reflect: A healthy marriage or relationship is not built merely on sudden emotion, outward attraction, or emotional dependence. It is built on godly character. A truly beautiful relationship helps a person draw nearer to God, live with dignity, receive protection, and grow in love and responsibility.
1 Boaz saw Ruth’s vulnerable situation, yet he did not take advantage of her. Instead, he offered protection and respect. In your relationships—whether marriage, dating, friendship, family, or ministry—do you also long for and learn to build this kind of safety? How can you discern whether someone truly loves you, or simply needs, controls, or uses you?
2 Ruth remained diligent, humble, and faithful in caring for Naomi, even in hardship. She did not passively wait for someone to rescue her, but was faithful in what she could do. In your current relationship or season, could God be reminding you to wait for His provision while also faithfully doing what is before you today?
3 Boaz’s kindness included boundaries, responsibility, and protection. Ruth’s receiving included gratitude, humility, and diligence. In a healthy relationship, how should kindness and boundaries, receiving and responsibility, protection and freedom be balanced? Is there a relationship where you need to learn to give or receive in a healthier way?
As you read Ruth Chapter 2 today, do not see it only as the beginning of a romantic story. See how a relationship pleasing to God is built slowly through daily life, real needs, godly character, and acts of kindness.
Take a quiet breath before you begin. Bring your relationships, expectations, wounds, boundaries, and hopes for marriage before the Lord, and let His Word meet you there.
“The LORD recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the LORD God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to trust.”
— Ruth 2:12
2 And Naomi had a kinsman of her husband's, a mighty man of wealth, of the family of Elimelech; and his name was Boaz.
2 And Ruth the Moabitess said unto Naomi, Let me now go to the field, and glean ears of corn after him in whose sight I shall find grace. And she said unto her, Go, my daughter.
3 And she went, and came, and gleaned in the field after the reapers: and her hap was to light on a part of the field belonging unto Boaz, who was of the kindred of Elimelech.
4 And, behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem, and said unto the reapers, The Lord be with you. And they answered him, The Lord bless thee.
5 Then said Boaz unto his servant that was set over the reapers, Whose damsel is this?
6 And the servant that was set over the reapers answered and said, It is the Moabitish damsel that came back with Naomi out of the country of Moab:
7 And she said, I pray you, let me glean and gather after the reapers among the sheaves: so she came, and hath continued even from the morning until now, that she tarried a little in the house.
8 Then said Boaz unto Ruth, Hearest thou not, my daughter? Go not to glean in another field, neither go from hence, but abide here fast by my maidens:
9 Let thine eyes be on the field that they do reap, and go thou after them: have I not charged the young men that they shall not touch thee? and when thou art athirst, go unto the vessels, and drink of that which the young men have drawn.
10 Then she fell on her face, and bowed herself to the ground, and said unto him, Why have I found grace in thine eyes, that thou shouldest take knowledge of me, seeing I am a stranger?
11 And Boaz answered and said unto her, It hath fully been shewed me, all that thou hast done unto thy mother in law since the death of thine husband: and how thou hast left thy father and thy mother, and the land of thy nativity, and art come unto a people which thou knewest not heretofore.
12 The Lord recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the Lord God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to trust.
13 Then she said, Let me find favour in thy sight, my lord; for that thou hast comforted me, and for that thou hast spoken friendly unto thine handmaid, though I be not like unto one of thine handmaidens.
14 And Boaz said unto her, At mealtime come thou hither, and eat of the bread, and dip thy morsel in the vinegar. And she sat beside the reapers: and he reached her parched corn, and she did eat, and was sufficed, and left.
15 And when she was risen up to glean, Boaz commanded his young men, saying, Let her glean even among the sheaves, and reproach her not:
16 And let fall also some of the handfuls of purpose for her, and leave them, that she may glean them, and rebuke her not.
17 So she gleaned in the field until even, and beat out that she had gleaned: and it was about an ephah of barley.
18 And she took it up, and went into the city: and her mother in law saw what she had gleaned: and she brought forth, and gave to her that she had reserved after she was sufficed.
19 And her mother in law said unto her, Where hast thou gleaned to day? and where wroughtest thou? blessed be he that did take knowledge of thee. And she shewed her mother in law with whom she had wrought, and said, The man's name with whom I wrought to day is Boaz.
20 And Naomi said unto her daughter in law, Blessed be he of the Lord, who hath not left off his kindness to the living and to the dead. And Naomi said unto her, The man is near of kin unto us, one of our next kinsmen.
21 And Ruth the Moabitess said, He said unto me also, Thou shalt keep fast by my young men, until they have ended all my harvest.
22 And Naomi said unto Ruth her daughter in law, It is good, my daughter, that thou go out with his maidens, that they meet thee not in any other field.
23 So she kept fast by the maidens of Boaz to glean unto the end of barley harvest and of wheat harvest; and dwelt with her mother in law.
✨ Thank you for walking through today’s Scripture with us, dear sister.
Ruth Chapter 2 shows us that the relationship between Boaz and Ruth did not begin with hurried emotion, but was gradually revealed through kindness, respect, protection, and responsibility. God provided for Ruth and Naomi through the field of Boaz, and He also showed us how a person who fears Him can treat others with goodness, honor, and blessing. Now, let us bring our marriages, relationships, expectations, boundaries, and places needing healing before the Lord in prayer.

Asking God to Shape My Heart with Kindness and Reverence
Father, thank You for reminding me through Boaz that a truly beautiful relationship is not sustained by feelings alone, but begins with reverence for You, respect for people, and kindness in action. Boaz saw Ruth’s situation, yet he did not look down on her or take advantage of her. Instead, he responded to her need with kindness and protection.
Lord, please shape this kind of life within me first. Whether I am in marriage, dating, family, friendship, or ministry, help me not to be self-centered, not to control others with emotions, and not to use another person’s weakness for my own benefit. May my words and actions carry kindness from You, so that those who relate to me may feel respected, protected, and drawn closer to You. Amen.

Being Faithful Today While Waiting for God’s Provision
Father, Ruth did not remain trapped in self-pity or despair because she was a widow, a foreigner, and in need. She went to the field to glean and worked diligently to provide for herself and Naomi. Lord, help me also remain faithful today while I wait for Your provision.
If I am waiting for marriage, restored relationships, a family breakthrough, work opportunity, financial provision, or direction for the future, help me not to be swallowed by anxiety or surrender to passivity and helplessness. Like Ruth, may I do what I can do with all my heart. Teach me faithfulness in small things and trust in ordinary days. Help me believe that You can arrange grace in the fields of daily life, and that even when I do not know it, You may already be preparing the way before me. Amen.
🧑🧑🧒🧒
Father, I also pray for the sisters around me. Some are longing to be respected in marriage. Some need discernment in dating relationships. Some are afraid to trust again after being wounded. Some are waiting for a relationship that honors You. Some have given quietly in family and ministry for a long time, yet rarely feel seen or protected.
Lord, please care for them personally. For sisters who are married, may they experience more mutual respect, protection, and support. For sisters who are dating or considering marriage, give them clear eyes and spiritual discernment. For sisters who have been wounded, bring healing through Your love. For sisters who are still waiting, do not let loneliness lower their boundaries, and do not let delay take away their hope. Help us remind and bless one another, learning both kindness and wisdom in relationships. Amen.

Praying for Marriages, Families, and Vulnerable Relationships
Compassionate God, I also pray for marriages, families, and vulnerable relationships around the world. Many people experience control, coldness, betrayal, violence, humiliation, or disrespect in relationships. Many women, widows, immigrants, the poor, and the vulnerable lack protection and support under the pressures of life.
Lord, raise up people of compassion and justice to become shelter and help for others. May more families learn to replace control with respect, harm with kindness, avoidance with responsibility, and exploitation with protection. Make Your Church a safe place that welcomes the lonely, supports the weak, protects the wounded, and bears witness to the holiness, kindness, and love that come from You. Amen.
After reading Ruth Chapter 2, we see that the relationship between Boaz and Ruth did not begin with romantic imagination, but was held gently through kindness in real-life need. Ruth gleaned diligently in the field. Boaz noticed her, respected her, protected her, and strengthened her with words of blessing. Such a relationship feels safe because it contains reverence for God and sees the dignity and needs of another person.
As we close this page and return to our own relationships, perhaps you are learning mutual respect in marriage. Perhaps you are learning discernment in dating. Perhaps you are waiting for a relationship that honors God. Perhaps you are slowly recovering from past wounds. Remember this: a relationship that comes from God will not consume, control, or shame you in the name of love. It will help you know God more deeply and live more fully in the dignity He has given you.
May today’s Scripture remind you that what is most beautiful in a relationship is not only intense emotion, but steady kindness, pure respect, appropriate protection, and willing responsibility. May God lead you in every relationship to give kindness and receive kindness, to protect others and also allow yourself to be rightly protected.
