Day 236 of the Women’s Bible Plan: Read Matthew 6:19-24 and listen to the words of Jesus about earthly treasure, heavenly treasure, the eye, and serving God alone. Through this passage, we are invited to examine what truly holds our heart and to turn our desires from earthly accumulation toward treasure in heaven.
Every day, we carry many concerns: income, savings, housing, children’s needs, work stability, daily responsibilities, and future security. Many of these things are not wrong in themselves. God knows that we have real needs and responsibilities in this earthly life.
Yet in Matthew Chapter 6, the Lord Jesus gently and directly reminds us that the deeper question is not only “What do we own?” but “What has taken hold of our heart?” Earthly treasures can decay, disappear, or be taken away. Heavenly treasure is kept before God and cannot be destroyed. Jesus is not calling us to ignore responsibility, but to see clearly: temporary things must not become the master of the heart.
Today’s passage asks a searching question: Where is my treasure? Because wherever my treasure is, there my heart will be also. In other words, what I value most, fear losing most, and most willingly spend my time, energy, money, and affection pursuing often reveals what my heart is truly trusting.
Matthew 6:19-24 is an important part of the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus first tells His disciples not to lay up treasures upon earth, where moth and rust corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal. He then tells them to lay up treasures in heaven, where treasure cannot be corrupted or stolen.
These words do not deny the importance of work, saving, stewardship, or daily responsibility. Instead, they reveal the attachments of the human heart. We easily build our sense of security on visible accumulation: bank accounts, possessions, status, approval, children’s achievements, career stability, or the feeling that life is under control. Yet all earthly things are temporary, and none of them can truly carry the weight of our souls.
Jesus says, “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” This sentence is like a mirror, showing us the direction of the heart. We often think we can place God first with our words while allowing the world to occupy the deepest place within us. But Jesus tells us that the heart follows the treasure. What we cherish, pursue, protect, and fear losing will slowly shape our desires, choices, and direction in life.
Then Jesus speaks of the eye as the light of the body. If the eye is single, the whole body will be full of light; if the eye is evil, the whole body will be full of darkness. This reminds us that spiritual vision shapes the whole life. When our eyes are fixed only on earthly gain, comparison, and loss, our hearts can become filled with anxiety, envy, greed, and unrest. But when our eyes are enlightened by the kingdom of God and His righteousness, the order of our lives begins to change.
Finally, Jesus says that no man can serve two masters. We cannot serve both God and mammon. Mammon is not merely money itself, but money, possessions, and earthly security placed in the position that belongs to God alone. Today’s theme, “Where Your Treasure Is,” invites us to honestly ask: What am I laying up? Whom am I truly serving? Is my heart being pulled by temporary treasure on earth, or drawn by eternal treasure in heaven?
1 Jesus says not to lay up treasures upon earth. What have you been worrying about, calculating most carefully, or fearing to lose recently? Is any of it beginning to occupy a place in your heart that belongs to God?
2 “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” If you looked at your time, money, energy, and emotional investment, where would you find your heart most often resting? Is God inviting you to reorder your priorities today?
3 Jesus says no one can serve two masters. Have you ever said that you trust God while quietly building your security on money, stability, achievement, control, or human approval? Are you willing to ask the Lord to free you from the bondage of serving mammon?
As you read Matthew 6:19-24 today, do not treat this passage only as a warning about money. Let the words of Jesus shine into the heart. What do we truly treasure? What do we fear? What do we pursue? What have we allowed to become master over us?
Take a quiet breath before you begin. Bring your anxieties, desires, sense of security, view of money, and life priorities before the Lord, and let His Word meet you there.
“For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”
— Matthew 6:21
19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
22 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.
23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!
24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
✨ Thank you for walking through today’s Scripture with us, dear sister.
Matthew 6:19-24 allows us to hear the clear reminder of the Lord Jesus: do not lay up treasures only upon earth, but lay up treasures in heaven; for where our treasure is, there will our heart be also. Now, let us bring our hearts, possessions, sense of security, desires, and direction of worship before God in prayer.

Asking the Lord to Show What My Heart Truly Treasures
Father, thank You for reminding me through the words of Jesus that my heart is often pulled by things I can see. Many times, I think I am simply living responsibly, making careful plans, and preparing for the future. Yet You know how much anxiety, comparison, fear, and unrest can hide beneath my desire for earthly security.
Lord, shine Your light into my heart and help me honestly see what I truly treasure. If my heart is held by money, release me. If my heart is held by human approval, heal me. If my heart is held by control, achievement, or possessions, bring me back to You. May my heart no longer be ruled by things that can decay or disappear, but be drawn by Your eternal love and kingdom. Amen.
✨
Learning to Lay Up Treasure in Heaven
Lord, You are not calling me to run away from earthly responsibility, but to live with eternal vision. Teach me to understand that treasure in heaven is not merely about what I possess, but about how I live before You: how I love, give, forgive, remain faithful, obey in small things, and use what You have entrusted to me to bless others.
Please change my values. Help me not only seek to have more, but learn to give more. Help me not only care about my own comfort, but see the needs of others. Help me not only hurry after temporary success, but remain faithful in eternal things. May my time, money, gifts, and household be used by You and become part of treasure laid up in heaven. Amen.

Serving God Alone, Not Mammon
Father, Jesus said that no one can serve two masters. Lord, I confess that sometimes I say I trust You, yet my heart trusts more deeply in money, stability, plans, and control. Mammon may not always pull me away from faith openly, but it can quietly take hold of my heart and teach me to measure security by money, worth by possessions, and life by comparison.
Please free me from this bondage. Help me no longer treat possessions as master, but as a stewardship You have entrusted to me. Give me contentment, and also generosity. Give me wisdom to manage resources, and freedom not to be ruled by them. In every choice, teach me to serve You alone, because only You are worthy of my whole-hearted worship. Amen.

Interceding for Families
Father, I also pray for the sisters around me. Many are carrying real pressures related to family, work, children, bills, and the future. Some are anxious about finances. Some feel burdened by housing, legal status, career, children’s education, or retirement planning. Others are losing peace without realizing it in a culture of comparison and consumption.
Lord, comfort them personally. Provide for their real needs and help them not be swallowed by anxiety. Let them experience Your faithfulness in practical responsibilities, learn to look to You in financial pressure, and rediscover heavenly values in the midst of temptation and comparison. Help us remind one another not to measure life by outward possessions, but to set our hearts together on the kingdom of God and His righteousness. Amen.
After reading Matthew 6:19-24, we hear the gentle but clear reminder of Jesus: where our treasure is, there will our heart be also. Earthly treasure can decay, disappear, and fail to satisfy the soul. Only God Himself and His eternal kingdom are worthy of our deepest desire and trust.
As we close this page and return to real life, there is still work to do, bills to pay, family to care for, and a future to plan. But remember this: responsibilities can be carried out without letting earthly accumulation own the heart; resources can be managed without letting mammon become master. In our daily choices, may we slowly draw our hearts back from anxiety, comparison, and greed, and place them again upon the Lord Himself.
May today’s Scripture remind you that your worth is not measured by how much you own, your security is not measured by how much you store up, and your satisfaction is not measured by how much the world can give. May your heart return to the true treasure and find freedom, contentment, and eternal hope in God.
