September 5: Matthew 11:25-30: Come to the Lord for Rest
Day 248 of the Women’s Bible Plan: Read Matthew 11:25-30 and listen to the Lord Jesus’ personal invitation to those who labour and are heavy laden. Through this devotional, we learn to come to Him with our weariness, pressure, responsibilities, and hidden burdens, receiving true rest and learning from His meek and lowly heart.
Some weariness is not only physical. Sometimes the body is tired, but the heart is even more tired. We may spend each day carrying responsibilities, meeting deadlines, caring for others, solving problems, and responding to expectations. Outwardly, we may still be holding everything together, while inwardly our hearts feel heavy and worn down.
Many times, it is not that we have no faith. It is that we have gone too long without truly stopping and bringing our burdens to the Lord.
In Matthew Chapter 11, Jesus does not say to the weary, “Try harder.” He does not shame them for being tired. Instead, He says, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” This is the Lord’s own invitation, and it is a door of grace opened to every weary soul.
Today, we do not come to the Lord only after we have fixed ourselves. We come with our labour, burdens, tears, pressure, and unspoken exhaustion. True rest does not always mean that every circumstance immediately becomes lighter or every responsibility disappears. It means that in Christ, we receive renewed strength, direction, and a heart shaped by His gentleness.
In Matthew 11:25-30, Jesus first thanks the Father because the things of God have been hidden from the wise and prudent, and revealed unto babes. Then Jesus declares His unique relationship with the Father: “no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.” This tells us that truly knowing God does not come through human pride or cleverness, but through the revelation and grace of Christ.
Then Jesus gives one of the most tender and precious invitations in Scripture: “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” He does not call only those who are already strong, lighthearted, or well-organized. He calls those who are weary, burdened, pressured, and tired.
The burdens we carry may be outward responsibilities, or inward anxieties. They may come from family, work, ministry, or relationships. They may also come from guilt, shame, fear, comparison, control, people-pleasing, perfectionism, or the feeling that everything depends on us. The Lord knows what we are carrying, and He knows that we cannot find true rest by our own strength.
Jesus does not say that coming to Him means we will have no yoke at all. Instead, He says, “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart.” This reminds us that the rest He gives is not laziness, escape, or a life without responsibility. It is the rest of being yoked with Him, learning His meek and lowly heart. His yoke is easy, and His burden is light, because He is not a Master who crushes us. He walks with us, strengthens us, teaches us, and carries us by His grace.
Today’s theme, “Come to the Lord for Rest,” invites us to reflect: Have I truly brought my burdens to the Lord? Am I pushing myself to the limit while forgetting that Jesus is calling me back to Himself? The Lord is not only concerned with how much I accomplish. He also cares whether my heart is resting in Him.
1 Jesus says, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden.” What is the most real burden you are carrying right now? Is it family responsibility, work pressure, ministry weariness, relational tension, or a long-standing anxiety, shame, fear, or self-blame in your heart?
2 Jesus does not require people to become strong before they come to Him. Do you often feel that you must perform well, get yourself together, or become more spiritual before you can come near to the Lord? How does this passage help you believe that Jesus is inviting the weary you to come to Him?
3 Jesus says He is meek and lowly in heart, and He invites us to learn from Him. In what situations do you most need to learn His meekness and humility? Is it in communication with family, the way you handle pressure, moments of conflict, letting go of control, admitting your limits, or receiving help?
As you read Matthew 11:25-30 today, do not treat this passage only as a comforting verse. Let the Lord’s invitation enter your real daily life. May we learn not to carry everything alone, but to come again and again to the Lord and find renewed strength in Him.
Take a quiet breath before you begin. Bring your weariness, your pressure, your long-held responsibilities, and the weaknesses you do not like to admit before the Lord Jesus, and let His Word meet you there.
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
— Matthew 11:28
25 At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.
26 Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight.
27 All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.
28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
✨ Thank you for walking through today’s Scripture with us, dear sister.
Matthew 11:25-30 lets us hear the tender invitation of the Lord Jesus: all who labour and are heavy laden may come to Him, and He will give them rest. Now, let us bring our weariness, responsibilities, pressure, anxieties, and hidden burdens before the Lord in prayer.

Coming to the Lord with Honest Weariness
Father, thank You for reminding me through the words of Jesus that I do not need to pretend I am not tired, and I do not need to get everything in order before coming to You. You know the responsibilities I carry each day, and You know the exhaustion I do not always know how to express. Sometimes I keep going on the outside, while inside I feel heavy. Sometimes I care for others and forget that my own heart also needs to be cared for by You.
Lord, today I want to hear Your invitation and come to You. Help me honestly admit my limits. Help me stop hiding my weariness or using busyness to prove my worth. Teach me to lay down my burdens before You and receive the rest that comes from You. Let my heart no longer be driven by anxiety, but strengthened again in Your presence. Amen.

Learning the Meek and Lowly Heart of Jesus
Lord Jesus, You said that You are meek and lowly in heart, and You invite us to learn from You. So often, under pressure, I become impatient. In responsibility, I become tense. In relationships, I become defensive. In weariness, I may speak words that wound others. Please help me not only ask for lighter circumstances, but also allow my heart to be changed by You.
Give me Your meekness, so that I no longer face everything with control, anxiety, and urgency. Give me Your humility, so that I can admit I am not all-powerful, receive Your guidance, and accept appropriate help from others. As I walk under Your yoke, make me more like You. May my words, attitudes, and choices carry the quietness and gentleness that come from You. Amen.

Finding Freedom Under the Lord’s Yoke
Father, Jesus says that His yoke is easy and His burden is light. Lord, I confess that not every burden I carry has come from You. Some are expectations I have placed on myself. Some are pressures placed on me by other people. Some come from perfectionism, comparison, people-pleasing, fear, or a false sense that everything depends on me.
Help me discern which responsibilities You have entrusted to me and which burdens I need to return to You. Free me from false guilt and from the belief that I must hold everything together by my own strength. Teach me to be yoked with Christ, to live in His rhythm, to serve in His grace, and to rest in His love. May obedience to You not crush me, but lead me into true freedom. Amen.

Interceding for Sisters
Father, I also pray for the sisters around me who are labouring and carrying heavy burdens. Some are caring for others in their families day after day. Some are under great pressure at work. Some are weary in ministry. Some have endured relational pain until they feel they have little strength left. Some are weighed down by anxiety, depression, loneliness, and self-blame.
Lord, draw them personally to Jesus. Let them know that they do not have to be strong all the time, and that they do not need to perform well in order to be loved. Give them rest, comfort, and practical help. Help us support one another as sisters. Keep us from dismissing others’ weariness or using spiritual slogans to add pressure. Teach us to accompany, listen, pray, and come together to the Lord Jesus for rest. Amen.
After reading Matthew 11:25-30, we hear the Lord Jesus Himself calling the weary and heavy laden to come to Him. He does not stand far away demanding that we try harder, become stronger, or be more perfect. He invites us to draw near in our weariness, trust Him with our burdens, and find true rest in His meek and lowly heart.
As we close this page and return to real life, the responsibilities may still be there, and the problems may not disappear immediately. But we do not have to carry everything alone. Today, when you feel tired in heart, weighed down by pressure, or unable to keep going, remember the Lord’s invitation: “Come unto me.”
May today’s Scripture remind you that rest is not escaping responsibility, but returning to the Lord for renewed strength. May you draw near to Jesus in your labour, learn His meek and lowly heart under your burdens, and walk in His grace with a lighter, freer heart.
