Day 129 of the Women’s Bible Plan: Read Song of Solomon Chapter 1 and reflect on the joy and preciousness of love within marriage. Through the sincere, poetic, and affectionate language of this chapter, this devotional helps women consider the beauty of love, delight, appreciation, attraction, response, and commitment in the intimate relationship God designed.
When we think about marriage, we often think of responsibility, adjustment, communication, patience, household duties, parenting, financial pressure, and the many challenges of daily life. These things are real and important. But Scripture does not describe marriage only as duty and obligation. In the Song of Solomon, we also see joy, desire, appreciation, intimacy, and beauty within love.
Song of Solomon Chapter 1 is warm, poetic, and full of affection. It shows us that God does not despise the love between husband and wife. The marriage He designed is not only about sharing life and carrying burdens together; it also includes cherishing one another, delighting in one another, being drawn to one another, and enjoying the intimacy He has given.
For many sisters, the subject of love and marriage may bring different feelings. Some are experiencing sweetness in marriage. Some feel weary in marriage. Some are waiting for marriage. Some have been wounded in love. Some need to relearn how to be loved, how to express love, and how to remain honorable and sincere in intimate relationships. Today’s Scripture invites us to return to God’s original intention: love is not a cheap emotion, nor is it selfish possession. In respect, appreciation, commitment, and holiness, love is a precious gift before God.
Song of Solomon Chapter 1 uses rich poetic language to describe longing, praise, and mutual appreciation between lovers. The woman expresses her desire for her beloved and also speaks honestly about her appearance, her situation, and the feelings of her heart. The beloved responds with tender words, praising her beauty and affirming her uniqueness.
This chapter shows us that healthy love is not cold responsibility, nor is it only outward attraction. It includes being cherished, seen, and responded to. The woman’s longing for her beloved is not hidden, and the beloved’s praise for her is not shallow flattery. It is affirmation filled with respect and affection. This kind of love helps a person feel seen, treasured, and received.
In marriage and marital relationships, joy often needs to be learned again. Many couples begin with appreciation and attraction, but later the pressures of life, misunderstanding, busyness, hurt, and the coldness of routine can cover them over. We may become quick to point out what is wrong, but forget to express appreciation. We may keep fulfilling responsibilities, but forget to enjoy one another. We may allow marriage to become only the operation of daily life, forgetting that love also needs to be tenderly cared for.
Song of Solomon Chapter 1 reminds us that love within marriage is a gift from God. It should be treasured and protected. This is not a romance that ignores reality, but love that is willing to keep seeing the good in the other person, expressing affection, maintaining closeness, and responding to one another within real life. For married sisters, this passage invites us to ask: Am I still willing to look at my spouse with tenderness and appreciation? For unmarried sisters, it also reminds us that love worth waiting for should be marked by respect, holiness, preciousness, and commitment—not by neglecting ourselves, losing boundaries, or trading love for a false sense of security.
Today’s theme, “Song of Solomon: The Joy of Love,” invites us to reflect: How does God view love within marriage? Are we willing to learn appreciation, respect, sincere expression, and the guarding of love in the light of God’s holiness?
1 Song of Solomon Chapter 1 is full of mutual appreciation and sincere expression. In close relationships, do you find it easy to express love and appreciation, or are you more likely to remain silent, criticize, or hide your feelings? Could God be reminding you today that healthy love also needs to be spoken, treasured, and answered?
2 The woman in this chapter expresses longing, yet she also speaks honestly about her situation and insecurity. In love or marriage, are you able to express your true feelings without suppressing them, pretending, or using people-pleasing to gain acceptance? Do you believe that in a God-honoring relationship, your feelings can also be heard with respect?
3 The joy of marriage can slowly be covered by pressure, responsibility, and routine. If you are married, how might you cherish your spouse again and restore appreciation and tenderness? If you are waiting for marriage, how can you learn to view love through God’s eyes, neither despising yourself nor lowering the standards that honor Him?
As you read Song of Solomon Chapter 1 today, do not see it only as romantic poetry. Let it also remind you that love given by God is precious, joy in marriage is worth treasuring, and intimate relationships need to be guarded in love, respect, holiness, and commitment.
Take a quiet breath before you begin. Bring your expectations, disappointments, wounds, and hopes about love, marriage, and intimacy before the Lord, and let His Word meet you there.
“Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth: for thy love is better than wine.”
— Song of Solomon 1:2
1 The song of songs, which is Solomon's.
2 Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth: for thy love is better than wine.
3 Because of the savour of thy good ointments thy name is as ointment poured forth, therefore do the virgins love thee.
4 Draw me, we will run after thee: the king hath brought me into his chambers: we will be glad and rejoice in thee, we will remember thy love more than wine: the upright love thee.
5 I am black, but comely, O ye daughters of Jerusalem, as the tents of Kedar, as the curtains of Solomon.
6 Look not upon me, because I am black, because the sun hath looked upon me: my mother's children were angry with me; they made me the keeper of the vineyards; but mine own vineyard have I not kept.
7 Tell me, O thou whom my soul loveth, where thou feedest, where thou makest thy flock to rest at noon: for why should I be as one that turneth aside by the flocks of thy companions?
8 If thou know not, O thou fairest among women, go thy way forth by the footsteps of the flock, and feed thy kids beside the shepherds' tents.
9 I have compared thee, O my love, to a company of horses in Pharaoh's chariots.
10 Thy cheeks are comely with rows of jewels, thy neck with chains of gold.
11 We will make thee borders of gold with studs of silver.
12 While the king sitteth at his table, my spikenard sendeth forth the smell thereof.
13 A bundle of myrrh is my well-beloved unto me; he shall lie all night betwixt my breasts.
14 My beloved is unto me as a cluster of camphire in the vineyards of Engedi.
15 Behold, thou art fair, my love; behold, thou art fair; thou hast doves' eyes.
16 Behold, thou art fair, my beloved, yea, pleasant: also our bed is green.
17 The beams of our house are cedar, and our rafters of fir.
✨ Thank you for walking through today’s Scripture with us, dear sister.
Song of Solomon Chapter 1 shows us the joy, longing, praise, and mutual appreciation found in love. The marriage God designed is not only responsibility and obligation, but also intimacy and delight within holiness, respect, and commitment. Now, let us bring our marriages, our views of love, our intimate relationships, our waiting, and our wounds before the Lord in prayer.
🩷
Learning to See a Loved One with Appreciation and Tenderness
Father, thank You for reminding me through Song of Solomon Chapter 1 that joy and appreciation in love also matter to You. You do not call us only to carry responsibility in marriage; You also desire that we cherish, see, and respond to one another in love.
Lord, if I am married, help me not to let busyness, pressure, and habit cover over my appreciation for my spouse. Do not let me see only his weaknesses, slowness, or shortcomings. Help me see again the things in him that are worthy of gratitude, affirmation, and tenderness. Teach me to express love with gentle words and nurture the relationship with sincere actions, so that marriage may become not only a life we share, but a place where we grow together in Your love. Amen.
✨
Guarding Dignity and Holiness in Intimate Relationships
Lord, Song of Solomon shows us that love can be passionate and beautiful; it can be intimate, and it should also be treasured and protected. Help me see love through Your eyes. Do not let me turn love into selfish possession, and do not let me treat intimacy as something cheap.
If I am waiting for marriage, guard my heart. Do not let loneliness lower my standards, and do not let the desire to be loved make me lose healthy boundaries. Help me remember that I am Your beloved daughter. I do not need to trade compromise for security, nor do I need to please others to prove my worth. Shape me so that I can wait for a love marked by respect, holiness, commitment, and true joy in You. Amen.
🧑🧑🧒🧒
Father, I also pray for the sisters around me. For married sisters, renew their marriages so that there will be not only responsibility, but also tenderness, appreciation, communication, and joy. For sisters waiting for marriage, strengthen their hearts so that they will not compromise out of anxiety or doubt their worth because of loneliness. For sisters wounded in relationships, comfort them personally and help them find healing in Your love.
Lord, help us encourage one another as sisters. Keep us from increasing pressure through comparison or urging. Instead, teach us to watch over one another, pray for one another, and support one another in love. May our conversations bring wisdom and hope, helping us understand more deeply Your beautiful purpose for marriage, love, and intimate relationships. Amen.

Praying for Marriages and Families in the World
Compassionate God, I also pray for marriages and families in this world. Many relationships are breaking. Many couples have lost communication. Many people treat love as consumption, possession, or a tool for self-satisfaction, and many suffer loneliness and harm in unhealthy relationships.
Lord, restore respect for love and marriage. May more families experience healing from You. May husbands and wives learn to cherish one another. May the wounded be protected, and may those searching for love not be deceived by lies. Raise up churches to become warm, honest, and wise communities that accompany couples, support families, protect the vulnerable, and bear witness that the love You designed is holy, faithful, joyful, and precious. Amen.
After reading Song of Solomon Chapter 1, we see that love is not only responsibility, but also joy; not only commitment, but also appreciation; not only sharing life’s burdens, but also longing for, responding to, and treasuring one another. The marriage God designed does not despise the delight found in love. Instead, He places it within respect, holiness, and commitment so that love may remain a precious gift.
As we close this page and return to real life, perhaps you are learning to appreciate your spouse again. Perhaps you are waiting for a relationship that honors God. Perhaps you are slowly healing from past wounds. Remember this: true love does not cause someone to lose dignity, nor does it trap someone in fear and exhaustion. True love, in the light of God, helps a person feel treasured, respected, and drawn closer to Him.
May today’s Scripture remind you that joy in marriage is worth guarding, and dignity in love is worth treasuring. May God teach you to remain sincere in love, to keep holiness in intimacy, to grow in appreciation within relationships, and to become freer, gentler, and more hopeful in His love.
