Day 175 of the Women’s Bible Plan: Read Deuteronomy 30:15-20 and reflect on the choice Moses set before Israel—life and good, death and evil. Through this passage, this devotional helps parents and families consider how our daily spiritual choices shape the direction of the next generation.
In family life, many choices may seem small: how we arrange our time, how we speak under pressure, how we use money, how we respond when children make mistakes, whether we worship on the Lord’s Day, whether we pray as a family, and whether we are willing to repent before God first. These choices may not look as dramatic as major life decisions, yet day by day, they shape the direction of a home.
In Deuteronomy Chapter 30, Moses sets a clear choice before the people of Israel: life and good, death and evil. He calls them to love the LORD, obey His voice, and cleave unto Him, because He is their life. This choice was not only about one person. It also concerned their children and the generations to come.
Today’s Scripture reminds us that a parent’s spiritual choices are never isolated. How we love God, respond to His Word, face sin, handle relationships, and live out faith at home will leave a direction in the hearts of our children and the next generation. Choosing life is not merely choosing a better lifestyle. It is choosing to lead the whole household toward the way of the Lord.
Deuteronomy 30:15-20 is one of Moses’ most solemn appeals to Israel. He says, “See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil.” This was not an abstract moral idea, but a real covenant path for God’s people: if they loved the LORD, walked in His ways, and kept His commandments, they would live and multiply; but if their hearts turned away, if they refused to hear and were drawn away to worship other gods, they would surely perish.
Moses did not describe faith as a vague feeling. He placed it in concrete life choices: love God, obey God, and cleave to God—or turn away in heart, refuse to listen, and be drawn toward idols. These choices would lead to different directions, and they would affect whether the people could dwell long in the land God had promised.
From the perspective of “Parenting and Family,” this passage is especially important. Moses was not only speaking to isolated individuals. He was speaking to the whole community of Israel and to families across generations. When parents choose to love God, hear God, and depend on God, children grow up seeing what real faith looks like in the atmosphere of the home. But when parents worship God outwardly while their lives are continually pulled by idols and the values of the world, children also learn another direction from what they see.
Today’s theme, “Choosing Life So Our Children May Be Blessed,” is not meant to place a crushing burden on parents, as though a child’s entire future can be controlled by a parent. Rather, it reminds us that a parent’s life truly has influence. We cannot believe for our children, and we cannot walk their whole life for them. But in the place God has entrusted to us, we can choose life day by day and point our families toward the Lord.
Choosing life may look like making room for God’s Word in the middle of busyness. It may look like laying down pride in conflict. It may look like choosing prayer instead of complaint, blessing instead of cursing, and genuine repentance instead of image and control. These choices become visible testimonies in the hearts of our children.
Today’s passage invites us to ask: What choices are shaping our home? What do our children see in us—a path of loving God, obeying God, and depending on God, or a life driven by anxiety, comparison, money, success, and emotion? God still sets the way of life before us today, and He calls us to choose Him for ourselves and for our households.
1 Moses said that he set “life and good, and death and evil” before the people. In your family life right now, what choices are quietly shaping the spiritual direction of your home? Is it the way time is used, the way emotions are expressed, the way parents and children communicate, the way money is valued, or the family’s attitude toward God’s Word?
2 A parent’s choices can influence the direction of the next generation, but this does not mean parents should replace trust with control. Have you ever become overly anxious about your children, marriage, or family’s future? Is God inviting you to first choose to love Him, obey Him, and cleave to Him in your own life, then entrust your family into His hands?
3 What could “choosing life” look like in your life today? Perhaps it means praying with your child, apologizing to a family member, putting away your phone to be present, rebuilding worship on the Lord’s Day, stopping harmful words, or obeying God’s Word in one specific decision.
As you read Deuteronomy 30:15-20 today, do not see this passage only as an exhortation from Israel’s history. Let it also become a reminder for every family today: God sets the way of life before us, calls us to choose Him, and invites us to live that choice out in our homes.
Take a quiet breath before you begin. Bring your family, children, next generation, daily choices, and spiritual responsibilities before the Lord, and let His Word meet you there.
“I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live.”
— Deuteronomy 30:19
15 See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil;
16 In that I command thee this day to love the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments, that thou mayest live and multiply: and the Lord thy God shall bless thee in the land whither thou goest to possess it.
17 But if thine heart turn away, so that thou wilt not hear, but shalt be drawn away, and worship other gods, and serve them;
18 I denounce unto you this day, that ye shall surely perish, and that ye shall not prolong your days upon the land, whither thou passest over Jordan to go to possess it.
19 I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:
20 That thou mayest love the Lord thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the length of thy days: that thou mayest dwell in the land which the Lord sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.
✨ Thank you for walking through today’s Scripture with us, dear sister.
Deuteronomy 30:15-20 shows us that God set before His people the way of life and death, blessing and cursing, and called them to choose life so that they and their seed might live. Now, let us bring our families, children, next generation, daily choices, and spiritual direction before the Lord in prayer.

Choosing Life First in My Own Heart
Father, thank You for reminding me through today’s Scripture that the way of life is not vague, and faith is not only something I say with my mouth. You call me to love You, obey Your voice, and cleave unto You, because You are my life.
Lord, begin Your work in me first. Do not let me only ask my children, spouse, or family members to change while ignoring my own daily choices. Shine Your light on me. Show me where I am often driven by anxiety, anger, comparison, money, reputation, or control. Help me choose You in the small things each day: choosing prayer, obedience, honesty, forgiveness, gentle words, and Your Word hidden in my heart. May my own life be brought back again and again to the way of life. Amen.

Living Out a Faith That Is Real at Home
Lord, I know that my children and family do not only hear what I say; they also see how I live. If I speak of trusting You, yet my daily life is ruled by fear; if I teach my children to love God, yet make no room to draw near to You myself; if I desire blessing for my home, yet often wound others with my words, please have mercy on me and lead me back.
Make my faith real in my home. Let it be more than a religious habit on the surface; let it become life my family can see day by day. When I make mistakes, help me apologize. In conflict, teach me humility. Under pressure, teach me to depend on You. In raising children, help me care not only about behavior, but also about their hearts. May my home not be a perfect place, but a place where we keep returning to God and keep learning to choose life. Amen.

Choosing a Blessed Direction for Children and the Next Generation
Father, Your Word says to choose life, that I and my seed may live. Lord, I place my children and the next generation into Your hands. Whether they are young, grown, far away from me, or not yet truly knowing You, please draw their hearts to Yourself.
Help me not to replace faith with anxiety and control, or prayer with nagging and pressure. Let me live before them as a witness of loving You, listening to You, and depending on You. Give me wisdom to speak the right words at the right time. Protect the next generation from being led astray by the lies of the world. Do not let success, pleasure, comparison, or self-centeredness swallow their hearts. May they know You, choose You, and walk in the way of life in their own lives. Amen.

Praying for Families and the Next Generation
Compassionate God, I also pray for families and the next generation around the world. Many children are growing up in broken homes, poverty, war, violence, addiction, online temptation, and moral confusion. Many parents do not know how to lead their children, and many families have lost spiritual direction.
Lord, have mercy on this generation. May Your truth enter homes again. Turn the hearts of fathers and mothers toward their children, and the hearts of children toward their parents. Raise up churches, pastors, teachers, counselors, and spiritual elders to help families choose life and walk with the next generation on the right path. May more families not be swallowed by death, cursing, sin, and brokenness, but receive life, hope, and blessing again in Christ. Amen.
After reading Deuteronomy 30:15-20, we see that Moses did not give Israel a vague suggestion. He clearly set before them life and death, blessing and cursing. Choosing life is not only a one-time decision. It is choosing again and again, in everyday life, to love God, obey God, and cleave to God.
As we close this page and return to family life, the way we speak today, respond to pressure, handle conflict, use time, face our children, and regard God’s Word is slowly shaping the direction of our homes. We cannot control every choice our children will make in the future, but today, through our own lives, we can point them toward God.
May today’s Scripture remind you that a parent’s choices have influence, but God’s grace has even greater power. May you not be crushed by anxiety or discouraged by past failures. Beginning today, may you turn to God in one specific small choice, choose life, and see your home receive renewed direction, blessing, and hope in Him.
