Day 176 of the Women’s Bible Plan: Read Joshua 24:14-15 and reflect on Joshua’s clear declaration before Israel: “as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” This family devotional helps women consider how a household can set a spiritual direction, choose to fear and serve the Lord, and bring faith into daily decisions, parenting, relationships, and family life.
Every family is being led by something. Some homes are led by busyness. Some are led by achievement, grades, money, security, social media, children’s future, parents’ expectations, or the pressure of daily life. Many times, we do not intentionally turn away from God. But through our daily schedules, choices, habits, and priorities, something else slowly becomes the true center of the home.
In Joshua Chapter 24, Joshua is now old. He looks back on how the Lord led Israel—from Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to the exodus from Egypt, the crossing of the Red Sea, and the entrance into Canaan. Again and again, God had shown grace, protection, victory, and faithfulness to His promises. Then Joshua brings the people to a serious choice: choose you this day whom ye will serve.
In this passage, Joshua speaks a clear and firm word that every household needs to return to again and again: “as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
Joshua 24:14-15 is part of Joshua’s final exhortation to the people of Israel. He calls them to fear the LORD, serve Him in sincerity and in truth, and put away the gods their fathers served on the other side of the flood and in Egypt. He does not present faith as a vague tradition, nor does he treat worshiping God as a decorative part of life. He places it before the people as a decision that must be taken seriously.
Joshua says, “And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve.” His words are direct and honest. No one truly lives without serving something. If we do not serve the LORD, we will be ruled by something else—idols, desires, fear, people’s opinions, success, comfort, or the security the world promises.
Joshua does not make the decision for the whole nation, but he makes a clear declaration for his own household: “but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” This is not merely a sentence to hang on a wall. It is a family direction. It is not a momentary emotional statement, but a response formed after many years of seeing God’s faithfulness. Joshua knows that after entering the promised land, Israel will still face many temptations and spiritual dangers, so he sets the center of his household back upon the Lord.
Today’s theme, “Joshua’s Household Serving the LORD,” invites us to reflect: What is leading our home? Have we placed faith only in Sunday worship, church activities, prayer times, or religious routines, or are we willing to let the Lord shape our daily decisions, parenting, values, schedules, conversations, and family direction?
For women, this passage also gives a meaningful reminder. Whatever our role in the family may be—as a mother, wife, daughter, sister, or spiritual companion—we can watch over the household from the place God has given us. We may not be able to control every family member’s choices, but we can begin by setting our own hearts before the Lord. Through our prayers, words, example, love, and daily faithfulness, we can point our families toward the God who is worthy to be served.
1 Joshua calls the people to “choose you this day whom ye will serve.” What most easily leads your household right now? Busyness, children’s grades, financial pressure, expectations from others, phones and the internet, or anxiety about the future? Are these things quietly taking the center of your home?
2 “As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” Is this verse merely familiar to you, or is it a family direction that needs to be renewed? If this declaration were to become more visible in your daily family life, what would most need to change—your time, conversations, prayer, worship, values, or parent-child relationships?
3 Joshua could not decide for every Israelite, but he could declare the direction of his own household. In your family, what things are outside your control? What things can you begin to do faithfully—praying for your family, speaking gently, building a family devotional habit, honoring the Lord in decisions, or influencing children through love and example?
As you read Joshua 24:14-15 today, do not see this passage only as a famous family declaration. Let it become a quiet examination of the heart: Whom is my home serving? Whom is my heart following? How can I begin today to turn my family direction toward the LORD?
Take a quiet breath before you begin. Bring your family, parenting, marriage, household relationships, spiritual responsibilities, weaknesses, and hopes before the Lord, and let His Word meet you there.
“but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
— Joshua 24:15
14 Now therefore fear the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the Lord.
15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.
✨ Thank you for walking through today’s Scripture with us, dear sister.
Joshua 24:14-15 shows us Joshua standing before the people and declaring clearly, “as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” He did not say this in a world without temptation. He spoke it as Israel entered the promised land and faced many future choices and spiritual dangers. Now, let us bring our own homes, children, parent-child relationships, family values, and spiritual direction before the Lord in prayer.

Asking God to Become the Center of My Home Again
Father, thank You for reminding me through Joshua’s declaration that every household needs a clear spiritual direction. Many times, my home does not turn away from You intentionally. It simply becomes filled with busyness, pressure, plans, phones, grades, work, and daily responsibilities until You are slowly pushed to the side.
Lord, forgive me for often placing urgent things before important things, and for allowing spiritual priorities to be crowded out by daily arrangements. Help me reorder the priorities of my home. May You not be the God we call upon only in trouble, but the Lord we fear, trust, thank, and serve each day. May my household not merely carry the name of Christian, but truly honor You in daily life. Amen.

Learning to Serve the LORD Through Family Choices
Lord, Joshua said, “choose you this day whom ye will serve.” This reminds me that serving You is not only something we do in church. It also includes the daily choices of family life: how we speak, how we handle conflict, how we arrange our time, how we use money, how we raise children, how we respond to grades, future plans, failure, and pressure. All of these reveal whom we truly serve.
Help me learn to make choices in my household that fear You. When I want to control instead of trust, remind me to surrender. When I become anxious over my children’s performance, help me first care for their hearts. When tension rises between family members, give me humility and love. When the world tells us to chase success, comparison, and security, help my home choose Your way. May we learn to serve You in small things and bear witness to You in daily life. Amen.

Watching Over the Next Generation Through Prayer and Example
Father, I especially pray for the next generation in my home. Whether they are my children, young people in my family, or spiritual children You have placed near me, please draw them personally to know You. This generation hears so many voices competing for their hearts: the internet, peers, popular culture, academic pressure, anxiety over self-worth, and fear of the future. Lord, protect them, and help them know from childhood or from this season onward that You are real, good, and trustworthy.
Help me not to pass on faith only through rules and requirements, but through prayer, daily life, gentleness, honesty, repentance, and love. Let me not be someone who appears perfect before children, but someone who knows how to return to God. Let me not only give commands, but also accompany, listen, guide, and bless. May my life become a small window through which they can see You. Amen.
🌍
Interceding for Families Around Us
Father, I also pray for the families around me. You know that some families are anxious about their children’s education. Some are weary in marriage. Some are facing financial pressure. Some are not united in faith. Some parents long to lead their children closer to You but do not know where to begin.
Lord, please help them personally. Give wisdom to parents, unity to husbands and wives, tender hearts to children, and grace for every family to begin again. Help us not compare whose family seems more spiritual or whose children appear more successful. Instead, teach us to support one another in love, share honest struggles, and learn together to bring our homes before You. May our homes become not battlefields of pressure, but places of grace, prayer, forgiveness, and spiritual inheritance. Amen.
After reading Joshua 24:14-15, we hear Joshua declare before all Israel, “as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” This is not merely a slogan. It is a way of life. It is not a one-time emotional statement, but a family direction that returns to God again and again through daily choices.
As we close this page and return to real family life, the home may still be busy. Children may still have homework and pressure. Marriage may still require communication. Different generations may still hold different views. Life will not suddenly become easy simply because of one declaration. But remember this: the spiritual direction of a household is not built in one day. It is shaped slowly through everyday choices.
May today’s Scripture remind you not to let busyness decide the direction of your home, and not to let the world define success for your children. From today, even one small change—a family prayer, a gentle conversation, a repentant attitude, a choice to put God first—can become a real step toward saying, “as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
