Day 128 of the Women’s Bible Plan: Read Proverbs 31:25-31 and reflect on the fear of the LORD in the virtuous woman. Through her strength, wisdom, kindness, diligence, and family witness, this devotional helps women see that true virtue is not built on appearance, ability, or achievement alone, but flows from a heart that fears the LORD.
When many women hear about the virtuous woman in Proverbs 31, they may feel two things at once. On one hand, her wisdom, diligence, strength, and influence are deeply inspiring. On the other hand, her life may feel overwhelming, as though she can do everything well while we fall far short.
She manages her household, works with diligence, helps the poor, cares for her family, speaks with wisdom, brings honor to her husband, and is blessed by her children. If we are not careful, we may read Proverbs 31 as a checklist for becoming a “perfect woman.” But today’s passage reminds us that the deepest beauty of the virtuous woman is not simply how much she does. It is the foundation of her life: she fears the LORD.
In marriage and family life, true and lasting virtue is not sustained by outward beauty, performance, or the constant effort to earn approval. True virtue grows from a woman who stands before God with reverence, wisdom, strength, love, and quiet security from Him.
Proverbs 31:25-31 shows us the deep beauty of the virtuous woman’s life. “Strength and honour are her clothing,” and “she shall rejoice in time to come.” She opens her mouth with wisdom, and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also praises her.
These descriptions show us that the virtuous woman’s life is not merely the performance of one role. It is a whole-life witness that flows from inward character. She has strength, but she is not harsh. She has honor, but she is not proud. She has wisdom, but she is not cold. She works diligently, but not merely to prove herself. She is praised by her family, but she does not live only to please people.
The climax of this passage comes in verse 30: “Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.” Scripture is not denying outward beauty, nor is it dismissing a woman’s gifts, abilities, or diligence. Rather, it places true worth where it belongs. Outward beauty changes. Human applause fades. Achievements rise and fall. But a life rooted in the fear of the LORD carries a beauty that endures.
In marriage and family relationships, this kind of reverence for God matters deeply. A wife who fears the LORD is not a woman without weakness, nor someone who always does everything perfectly. She is a woman who learns, in daily choices, to put God first. She learns to speak with wisdom, respond with kindness, serve with diligence, face the future with faith, and build her home with a heart that reveres God.
This passage also reminds us that the praise given to the virtuous woman is not based on short-term appearance or temporary approval. It is the fruit of a life shaped by God over time. Her husband praises her, and her children rise up and call her blessed because they have seen a long, real, steady pattern of reverence for God. True virtue is not a one-day performance. It is a life slowly formed before the LORD.
Today’s theme, “The Fear of the LORD in a Virtuous Woman,” invites us to reflect: What kind of woman, wife, mother, sister, and friend are we becoming? Are we driven mainly by appearance, efficiency, achievement, comparison, and other people’s opinions, or are we willing to return to God and let the fear of the LORD become the deepest foundation of our lives?
1 Proverbs says, “Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.” What most easily makes you anxious or comparative in your life? Appearance, age, family performance, marital status, children, work achievements, or other people’s opinions? How is God inviting you today to rebuild your worth in Him?
2 The virtuous woman “openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.” In marriage, family, or close relationships, do your words more often bring encouragement, comfort, and direction, or do they easily carry complaint, blame, and impatience? Are you willing to ask God to let reverence for Him also govern your tongue?
3 The virtuous woman’s family rises up and calls her blessed—not because she is perfect, but because she has lived a steady life of reverence before God. What do you hope the people closest to you will see in your life? Outward ability alone, or a woman shaped by God with wisdom, kindness, faith, and hope?
As you read Proverbs 31:25-31 today, do not receive the virtuous woman as a crushing standard of perfection. Receive her as an invitation: an invitation to return to the foundation of fearing the LORD and to let God shape our character, words, marriage, family, and daily life from the inside out.
Take a quiet breath before you begin. Bring your anxieties about appearance, performance, marriage, family, comparison, and self-worth before the Lord, and let His Word meet you there.
“Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.”
— Proverbs 31:30
25 Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.
26 She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.
27 She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.
28 Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.
29 Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.
30 Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.
31 Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.
✨ Thank you for walking through today’s Scripture with us, dear sister.
Proverbs 31:25-31 shows us that the true beauty of the virtuous woman is not only her diligence, strength, and contribution to her household, but the foundation of her life: she fears the LORD. Now, let us bring our marriage, family, words, service, sense of worth, and deepest pursuits before God in prayer.

No Longer Defining Myself by Outward Approval
Father, thank You for reminding me through Proverbs that favour is deceitful, beauty is vain, but the woman who fears You shall be praised. Lord, I confess that I am often affected by outward approval. A word of praise can lift me up, and a small moment of being overlooked can make me feel discouraged. I compare appearance, age, marriage, family, children, work, abilities, and what others call success.
Please help me rebuild my worth in You. Let me know that I am not valuable because I look beautiful, and I am not lovable only when I perform perfectly. My worth comes from the fact that You created me, redeemed me, called me, and received me in Christ. Set me free from comparison and people-pleasing. Help me stop running in exhaustion to prove myself, and teach me to live with true security as I fear You, draw near to You, and obey You. Amen.

Letting the Fear of God Govern My Words and Relationships
Lord, the virtuous woman opens her mouth with wisdom, and in her tongue is the law of kindness. Please shine Your light on my words, especially with those closest to me. Many times, I can be gentle and polite with others, yet become impatient, critical, complaining, or even hurtful toward the people I love most at home.
Please forgive me and help me change. Let reverence for You govern my tongue. In marriage, family, and close relationships, teach me to be slower to anger and quicker to listen; less condemning and more understanding; less cold in my words and more willing to encourage and bless. May my words not merely release my emotions, but become tools that build my home, support my spouse, comfort my children, and bless the people around me. Amen.
🧑🧑🧒🧒
Father, I also pray for the sisters around me. You know how many women carry heavy responsibilities in marriage, family, parenting, ministry, and work. Some appear strong and capable on the outside, yet feel deeply tired within. Some are trying so hard to be good wives, good mothers, and faithful servants, yet often feel that they are not enough. Some are crushed by pressure related to appearance, age, marital status, or family performance.
Lord, comfort them personally. Let them know that You are not looking for a perfect image, but for a heart that fears You. Help us as sisters not to compare with one another or burden one another with impossible standards, but to encourage, pray for, and remind one another to return to You. May every sister be renewed in Your love and live out true virtue that flows from reverence for You. Amen.

Praying for Women Burdened by Appearance, Achievement, and Expectations
Compassionate God, I also pray for many women in this world who are bound by appearance, achievement, family roles, and social expectations. Many feel forced to prove their worth through beauty, prove their ability through success, or prove the completeness of their lives through marriage and children. Many women give themselves continually in the home, yet are not respected, understood, or valued.
Lord, restore the dignity of women as You created them. Let more people see that true worth does not come from outward packaging, but from the life, grace, and calling You give. Protect women who are wounded in marriage and family. Strengthen weary mothers. Comfort those crushed by comparison and shame. Raise up churches to become places of healing, welcome, and truth. May the world see that the fruit of a life that fears the LORD is deeper, truer, and of greater eternal value than temporary outward beauty. Amen.
After reading Proverbs 31:25-31, we see that the beauty of the virtuous woman is not merely that she does many things well, nor only that she receives praise from her family. Her true beauty flows from the fear of the LORD. Because she fears God, she has strength to face the future. Because she fears God, her mouth carries wisdom and kindness. Because she fears God, her diligence is not an attempt to prove herself, but an overflow of love and blessing.
As we close this page and return to real life, there may still be housework, work responsibilities, children, marriage conversations, ministry duties, and many small details waiting for us. We may still face comparison, anxiety, and the voice that says, “You are not enough.” Remember this: God is not calling you to become a perfect woman in the eyes of others. He is inviting you to become a woman who fears Him, depends on Him, and is shaped by Him.
May today’s Scripture remind you that outward beauty changes and human opinions rise and fall, but a life that fears the LORD leaves a lasting fragrance. May you receive wisdom, strength, gentleness, and security from God in your marriage, family, and everyday life, and live out the true virtue that begins with reverence for Him.
