September 9: Matthew 13:31-35: The Mustard Seed and the Leaven
Women’s Bible Reading Plan Day 252. Today we read Matthew 13:31-35. The theme is “The Mustard Seed and the Leaven.” Through Jesus’ parables of the kingdom of heaven, we reflect on how God’s kingdom often begins in small and hidden ways, yet continues to grow, spread, and transform lives by His power. This page includes Matthew 13:31-35 Scripture, devotional reflection, meditation questions, a daily devotional verse, prayer, and life application.
Many times, we are tempted to overlook small beginnings. A short prayer, a gentle word, one obedient choice, a quiet time in Scripture, or a seemingly unnoticed act of service may not appear impressive in human eyes. It may even be easily forgotten. But in the kingdom of God, small does not mean useless, and hidden does not mean ineffective.
In Matthew 13, Jesus continues to teach about the kingdom of heaven through parables. He says that the kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed. Though it is the least of all seeds, when it is grown, it becomes greater than the herbs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in its branches. He also says that the kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.
These two parables show us the mysterious working of God’s kingdom. It may not begin in a dramatic, visible, or impressive way, yet it carries the life and power of God Himself. The mustard seed begins small, but continues to grow. The leaven is hidden in the meal, working quietly from within. So it is with the kingdom of God. It often begins in places people do not see, value, or understand, but in God’s time it grows, spreads, deepens, and brings real life-changing influence.
Today, we may quietly ask ourselves: Have I become discouraged because my service, growth, prayer, or obedience seems too small? Do I only believe in visible change while overlooking God’s hidden work? May the Lord help us see with faith that whatever is small but placed in God’s hands can become the beginning of His kingdom’s growth.
Matthew 13:31-35 records two parables Jesus spoke concerning the kingdom of heaven: the parable of the mustard seed and the parable of the leaven. Through familiar images from daily life, Jesus helps us understand that the growth and influence of God’s kingdom do not always begin with outward greatness or immediate visibility.
Jesus says that the kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed. Though it is the least of all seeds, when it is grown, it becomes greater than the herbs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in its branches. This reminds us that the work of God’s kingdom often begins in small, ordinary, and unnoticed places. Even the earthly ministry of Jesus began this way: He was not born in a palace, but in Bethlehem; He did not build His kingdom through human power, but called ordinary disciples to follow Him; His kingdom did not advance through outward strength, but through the cross and resurrection, opening the way of salvation.
This parable also comforts us not to despise the small beginnings in our own lives. Sometimes a person has just begun to read Scripture, pray, repent, or learn to forgive, and outwardly the change may not seem great. Sometimes spiritual change in a family begins with the obedience of just one person. Sometimes a ministry seems small, with only a few people involved. But if it comes from God and remains connected to God, He can cause a tiny seed to keep growing until it becomes a tree that blesses others.
Jesus also says that the kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened. The work of leaven is not as visible as the growth of a tree. It is hidden in the meal, slowly working from within. This parable shows us that God’s kingdom not only expands outwardly, but also quietly transforms the depths of human hearts, family relationships, community life, and the world.
Leaven reminds us that the Word of God, the grace of God, and the power of His kingdom often continue to work in unseen places. A person may not change dramatically overnight, yet God’s Word may be reshaping her thoughts, values, emotions, choices, and relationships. A family may not yet be fully restored, but the leaven of the gospel may already be at work within it. The world may still be full of darkness and confusion, yet the kingdom of God is still advancing until His purpose is fulfilled.
Today’s theme, “The Mustard Seed and the Leaven,” invites us to see God’s work with faith. Do not be discouraged because the beginning is small, and do not doubt because the process is hidden. The life of God’s kingdom is not measured by human appearance or size, but by the power of God Himself. May we believe that God can use a small beginning, an obedient heart, a hidden prayer, and a faithful perseverance to extend His kingdom and bring real transformation.
1 Jesus says that the kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed—small at the beginning, yet later growing into a great tree. Are there small beginnings in your life that you are tempted to overlook or feel discouraged about? Perhaps Scripture reading, prayer, service, repentance, learning to love others, or a new spiritual discipline?
2 The parable of the mustard seed reminds us that God can cause a small seed to grow into a tree that blesses others. Are you willing to believe that God can use your seemingly unnoticed obedience today as the beginning of future blessing for your family, church, or the people around you?
3 The leaven is hidden in the meal, quietly yet truly influencing the whole. Are you experiencing hidden growth that others may not see, but you know God is working within you? Are you willing to continue allowing God’s Word to work in your heart?
4 When God’s work is not immediately visible, and the results do not appear right away, what is your natural response? Anxiety, doubt, comparison, giving up, or continuing to wait by faith? How does today’s passage help you trust again in the life and power of God’s kingdom?
Today, let us enter Matthew 13:31-35 with these questions. Do not judge the work of God’s kingdom only by outward size, and do not decide whether God is working only by what you can see right now. The mustard seed is small, yet it contains life. The leaven is hidden, yet it brings influence. God often works in quiet, small, and hidden places to accomplish far more than we can imagine.
Let us take a quiet moment and bring before the Lord our discouragement over small beginnings, our impatience with hidden processes, and our doubts when results are not yet visible. Then let us begin today’s reading together.
“Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof.”
— Matthew 13:32
31 Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field:
32 Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof.
33 Another parable spake he unto them; The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.
34 All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spake he not unto them:
35 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.
✨ Thank you for walking through today’s Scripture with us, dear sister.
Matthew 13:31-35 shows us that the kingdom of God often begins small, yet carries the life-giving power that comes from God. It often works in hidden places, yet brings real transformation from within. Through the parables of the mustard seed and the leaven, Jesus invites us not to despise small beginnings and not to doubt God’s quiet work. Now let us bring our faith, waiting, and obedience before God, asking Him to help us trust in the growing power of His kingdom.

Ask the Lord to Help Me Not Despise Small Beginnings
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me through the parable of the mustard seed that in Your kingdom, a small beginning does not mean something has no value. Many times, I look at my life through human eyes. I feel that my Bible reading is not deep enough, my prayers are not strong enough, my service is not visible enough, my growth is not fast enough, and even the small acts of obedience I offer seem to make little difference.
Lord, please adjust my vision. Help me not to despise the small desire You have placed in my heart, and not to overlook daily faithfulness. Help me believe that whatever comes from You, remains connected to You, and is placed in Your hands—even if it is as small as a mustard seed—can grow in Your time. May I not become discouraged because the beginning is small, but be willing to sow, water, wait, and trust that growth belongs to You. Amen.
✨
Ask the Lord to Let My Life Continue Growing in Him
Lord, the mustard seed is small, but it does not remain small. It continues to grow until it becomes a tree where the birds may lodge in its branches. Please also cause my life to keep growing in You. Do not let me be satisfied merely with a beginning, and do not let me remain at the level of surface enthusiasm. Make me willing to be continually cultivated, pruned, and strengthened by You.
Make my faith more deeply rooted, my love wider, my obedience deeper, and my service more patient. May the growth of my life not be only for my own comfort, but also become a place where others may receive help, covering, and encouragement. Lord, use my ordinary days, simple responsibilities, and limited strength as small branches through which Your kingdom can bless others. Amen.

Ask the Lord to Help Me Trust Hidden Transformation
Heavenly Father, Jesus also said that the kingdom of heaven is like leaven, hidden in the meal until the whole was leavened. Many times, when I cannot see the process of Your work, I become anxious. When I cannot see immediate results, I begin to doubt. When others do not see my change, I may even deny that anything is happening within me.
Help me believe that You work not only in visible places, but also in hidden places. You work when I quietly read Your Word. You work when I patiently wait. You work when I choose to forgive, choose not to complain, and choose to keep praying. Even if these changes are not obvious right away, help me know that Your Word is working within me, renewing me, influencing me, and slowly changing my thoughts, character, and daily life. Amen.

Interceding for Sisters
Heavenly Father, I also pray for the sisters around me who are feeling discouraged. Some feel that their spiritual growth is too slow. Some feel that their service is too small. Some have prayed for their family, children, marriage, work, or church but have not yet seen results, and their hearts have become tired, doubtful, or even ready to give up.
Lord, please comfort them personally. Let them know that hidden faithfulness is not wasted in Your eyes, and small obedience is never forgotten by You. Strengthen every sister so that when results are unseen, they may still have hope; when the beginning is small, they may still have faith; and when the waiting is long, they may still have strength. Let them see that You can make the mustard seed grow, and You can make the leaven spread. Your work never stops simply because human eyes cannot see it. Amen.
After reading Matthew 13:31-35, we see that the working of God’s kingdom often goes beyond human sight. People tend to value results that are obvious, fast, and impressive. But God often begins in small, hidden, and quiet places. The mustard seed is small, yet it can grow into a tree. The leaven is hidden in the meal, yet it can make the whole lump rise. The kingdom of God carries His own life-giving power. It is not weak because its beginning is small, and it does not stop because its process is hidden.
As we turn this page, we may return to many ordinary small things: one Scripture reading, one prayer, one act of patience, one choice to forgive, one act of service, one gentle response to family, one decision to trust God under pressure. Please do not despise these small acts of obedience. If they are offered before God, He can use them to slowly grow life and gradually extend His influence.
May today’s Scripture remind you: in the kingdom of God, small can become a beginning, hiddenness can nurture transformation, and waiting does not mean nothing is happening. May you place your small faith, small prayer, and small obedience into the hands of the Lord, trusting that He can make the mustard seed grow into a tree and the leaven influence the whole lump.
