September 23: Matthew 25:14-30: The Faithful and Good Servant
Women’s Bible Reading Plan Day 266. Today we read Matthew 25:14-30. The theme is “The Faithful and Good Servant.” Through Jesus’ parable of the talents, we learn to cherish the gifts, time, opportunities, and responsibilities the Lord has entrusted to us, and to respond faithfully in everyday life. This page includes Matthew 25:14-30 Scripture, devotional reflection, meditation questions, a daily devotional verse, prayer, and life application.
Sometimes our lives may feel very ordinary: caring for family, working, serving, raising children, helping others, and handling many small things no one sees. At times, we may look at other women and feel that they have greater gifts, more opportunities, or more visible influence. But Jesus’ parable reminds us that God is not asking how much we have compared with someone else. He is looking at whether we are faithful with what He has placed in our hands.
In Matthew 25, the master entrusts his goods to his servants according to their ability. One receives five talents, another two, and another one. The servants with five and two talents use what they have received and gain more. But the servant with one talent is afraid, and he hides his talent in the ground.
This parable gently but clearly reminds us: do not despise the portion God has given you. Your time, gifts, relationships, family, work, service, life experiences, and even the tears and weaknesses you have walked through may become opportunities entrusted to you by the Lord. Sisters, faithfulness is not always loud or impressive. Often, faithfulness begins when we offer today’s small portion to the Lord with love.
Matthew 25:14-30 records Jesus’ parable of the talents. A man travels into a far country and entrusts his goods to his servants, giving to each according to his own ability. One receives five talents, another two, and another one.
The servants with five and two talents immediately use what they have received, and both gain more. When the master returns, he says to them, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.” This reminds us that the Lord values not only the size of the result, but the faithfulness of the servant in what has been entrusted.
The servant with one talent hides it in the ground. He did receive something, but because of fear, he does not use what was given to him. Many times, we may do the same. We may be afraid of failing, afraid of not being good enough, afraid of being compared, or afraid of doing things imperfectly, so we bury the gifts and opportunities God has given us.
Today’s theme, “The Faithful and Good Servant,” invites us to examine our hearts: What has the Lord entrusted to me? Am I using it, or have I buried it because of fear? May we not despise small faithfulness or compare ourselves with others. Instead, may we respond to God with joy, courage, and steadiness in the place He has given us.
1 The master gave talents to each servant “according to his several ability.” Do you believe that God knows your ability, your season, and your situation, and that He knows what kind of trust is right for you?
2 The servants with five and two talents faithfully used what they received. What “talents” has God placed in your hands right now? They may be gifts, time, experience, family, work, relationships, service opportunities, or life experiences that allow you to comfort others.
3 The servant with one talent buried it because he was afraid. Have you ever been afraid to begin, serve, or respond to God’s prompting because you feared failure, comparison, or feeling not good enough?
4 How can you faithfully use what the Lord has entrusted to you today? Perhaps through a word of encouragement, a prayer, a small act of service, a brave step forward, or a more willing heart in your family and work.
Today, let us enter Matthew 25:14-30 with these questions. Do not only look at how much others have received, and do not despise what is in your own hands. What the Lord desires is faithfulness in the place He has given you.
Let us take a quiet moment and bring our comparison, fear, and self-doubt before the Lord. Then let us begin today’s reading together.
“His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant.”
— Matthew 25:21
14 For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods.
15 And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey.
16 Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents.
17 And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two.
18 But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord's money.
19 After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them.
20 And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more.
21 His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
22 He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them.
23 His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
24 Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed:
25 And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine.
26 His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed:
27 Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury.
28 Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents.
29 For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath.
30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
✨ Thank you for walking through today’s Scripture with us, dear sister.
Matthew 25:14-30 reminds us that the Lord entrusts according to each person’s ability, and He looks for faithfulness. He does not ask us to compare ourselves with others, but to use the gifts and opportunities we have received from Him. Now let us bring our hearts before God and ask Him to help us become faithful and good servants.
🩷
Ask the Lord to Help Me See What He Has Entrusted to Me
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for knowing me. You know my ability, my situation, and the season of life I am in. You have not made me the same as everyone else. In Your wisdom, You have placed a fitting trust in my hands.
Lord, open my eyes to see what You have already given me. It may not look big, obvious, or impressive to others, but it still matters to You. Help me not to despise my gifts, time, family, work, relationships, or opportunities to serve. Teach me to receive them with a thankful heart. Amen.
✨
Ask the Lord to Free Me from Comparison and Fear
Lord, I confess that I often compare myself with others. When I see other women doing more, receiving more affirmation, or using more visible gifts, I can feel small, slow, and ordinary. Sometimes I am like the servant with one talent. Because I fear failure, imperfection, or people’s opinions, I bury what You have given me.
Please free me from comparison and fear. Help me remember that You praise faithfulness, not sameness. Give me courage to begin with small things, to respond to You today, and to use what You have placed in my hands. Amen.
🧑🧑🧒🧒
Ask the Lord to Make Me Faithful in Ordinary Places
Heavenly Father, help me be faithful in everyday life. Whether I am caring for my family, working with responsibility, serving in the church, walking with someone in love, or giving quietly where no one sees, let me not do things carelessly, but as unto You.
Lord, may my life not only be about avoiding mistakes, but also about bearing fruit for You. Teach me to offer my time, ability, experience, and love to You. May even the small things I do become blessings in Your hands. Amen.
🌍
Interceding for Sisters
Heavenly Father, I also pray for the sisters around me. Many sisters are truly faithful, yet they often feel that they are not good enough, not spiritual enough, or not useful enough. Please encourage them personally. Let them know that You see their patience at home, their perseverance at work, their service in the church, and their love for You even through tears.
May every sister stop despising the portion in her hands. Help us encourage one another, without comparison, jealousy, or shrinking back. Let us bear fruit faithfully together in the places You have given us. Amen.
After reading Matthew 25:14-30, we see that the master gave different amounts to each servant, but the praise for faithfulness was the same. The Lord does not ask us to have what someone else has, and He does not call us to live in comparison. He calls us to cherish what He has entrusted to us.
Dear sister, perhaps you feel that what you can do is small. But in the Lord’s eyes, small faithfulness is not small. A prayer, a word of comfort, an act of service, an obedient choice, or a day of quiet faithfulness in the home—He sees it all.
May today’s Scripture remind you: do not bury what the Lord has given you, and do not lose heart because of comparison. Offer your portion to the Lord, use it with courage, and serve faithfully. One day, may we hear Him say, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.”
