Day 228 of the Women’s Bible Plan: Read Matthew 5:13-16 and listen to Jesus’ words about being the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Today’s theme is “Salt and Light,” helping us reflect on how disciples of Christ can live as visible witnesses in everyday life. This page includes Matthew 5:13-16 Scripture, devotional reflection, heart questions, a daily verse, prayer, and a closing response.
Sometimes we may think that witnessing for the Lord must happen in large or public places: on a platform, in a church gathering, during an important ministry, or in a specially spiritual moment. But Jesus said, “Ye are the salt of the earth… Ye are the light of the world.” Salt and light do not exist for themselves. Salt enters food and brings flavor, preserves what would spoil, and quietly changes what it touches. Light shines in darkness, helping people see, bringing warmth, and keeping darkness from having the final word.
This passage reminds us that those who follow Jesus are not called to hide outside the world, but to live heavenly life within the world. Our witness is not only in what we say, but also in our attitude, words, choices, relationships, work, family, and service. A gentle and honest response, a decision not to follow the crowd, a word spoken with grace, or a choice to forgive and endure may become a window through which someone sees God.
Matthew 5:13-16 is an important part of the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus says to His disciples, “Ye are the salt of the earth.” In ancient daily life, salt was valuable not only for flavor, but also for preserving and keeping things from decay. When Jesus calls His disciples salt, He reminds us that God’s people should carry a different kind of life in this world. In the midst of corruption, coldness, and compromise, we are called to live with holiness, honesty, love, and grace.
Then Jesus says, “Ye are the light of the world.” The nature of light is to shine. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. A candle is not lit to be placed under a bushel, but on a candlestick, giving light to all that are in the house. The Lord is not calling His disciples to exalt themselves or perform for attention. He is calling them to live a heavenly life that cannot remain hidden, so that others may see their good works and glorify the Father in heaven.
These “good works” are not done to earn praise from people or to prove that we are spiritually better than others. True good works flow naturally from a life that knows God, follows Christ, and has been changed by grace. They may appear in the most ordinary places: speaking patiently at home, working honestly, refusing to repay evil with evil, serving willingly in the church, trusting God under pressure, and reaching out when someone is in need.
Today’s theme, “Salt and Light,” invites us to reflect: Does our life still carry the flavor of belonging to God? Do our words and actions help others see His goodness more clearly? In a world often marked by coldness, anxiety, comparison, complaint, and compromise, Jesus calls us not to hide the light or lose our saltiness, but to live as real, humble, steady witnesses in the places where He has put us.
1 Jesus said, “Ye are the salt of the earth.” In your daily life, do your words, attitudes, and choices carry the flavor of belonging to God? Are there any areas where you sense that you are being shaped too much by the world around you and losing the holiness, honesty, gentleness, or courage that should mark your life?
2 Jesus said, “Ye are the light of the world.” Do you sometimes hide your faith and witness because you fear people’s opinions, fear being misunderstood, or feel that you are not good enough? Could God be reminding you that you do not need to make a loud display, but you can quietly shine in ordinary life?
3 Jesus said that when people see your good works, they may glorify your Father which is in heaven. In your current place—home, work, church, friendships, neighborhood, or online space—is there a specific person or situation where God is calling you to bear witness through good works, gracious words, or a faithful attitude?
As you read Matthew 5:13-16 today, do not treat “salt and light” only as a familiar spiritual image. Let Jesus’ words shine freshly into your ordinary life. May we learn, even in the most ordinary day, to become people through whom others can taste grace and see light.
Take a quiet breath before you begin. Bring your daily witness, your words and attitudes, your hidden fears, and your willingness to be used by the Lord before Him, and let His Word meet you there.
“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.”
— Matthew 5:14
13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
✨ Thank you for walking through today’s Scripture with us, dear sister.
Matthew 5:13-16 lets us hear Jesus’ own calling to His disciples: Ye are the salt of the earth, and ye are the light of the world. Now, let us bring our lives, relationships, words, choices, and witness before God, asking Him to help us live visibly for Him in everyday life.

Not Losing the Flavor of a Godly Life
Father, thank You for reminding me through the words of Jesus that those who follow You are the salt of the earth. Lord, keep me from slowly losing the flavor of belonging to You while living in this world. Do not let complaint, comparison, coldness, falsehood, compromise, or fear shape me until my life no longer looks different.
Renew my heart, so that my words may be full of grace, my choices guided by truth, my treatment of others marked by gentleness, and my actions shaped by honesty. In my home, work, service, and relationships, may I not bring more bitterness or conflict, but peace, purity, truth, and hope. Let me live quietly yet firmly with the distinct flavor of Your life. Amen.

Not Hiding the Light Under a Bushel
Lord, You said that we are the light of the world. You are not asking me to exalt myself or perform spiritually for human praise. You are calling me to shine truthfully in the place where You have put me. Yet many times I fear people’s opinions, fear being misunderstood, fear that I am not good enough, and fear that once others know I believe in You, they will judge me by a higher standard.
Please free me from these fears. Help me remember that the light does not come from myself; it comes from You. Do not let me hide the light You have placed within me, and do not let my weakness keep me from being used by You. Help me shine in ordinary days through honest work, gentle speech, merciful action, steady trust, and a willing heart to serve. Amen.

Letting Others Glorify the Father Through My Life
Father, Jesus said that when people see our good works, they may glorify our Father which is in heaven. Lord, purify my motives. Do not let me do good in order to be noticed, praised, or to prove that I am better than others. Instead, let my life naturally reveal the work of Your grace, so that people may see Your goodness through what I do.
Help me live as a witness even before those closest to me. Do not let me be polite only before outsiders while losing patience at home. Do not let me appear devout only in gatherings while letting my words become careless in daily life. Do not let me thank You only when life is smooth while forgetting to trust You under pressure. Change me from within, so that my good works are not a performance, but worship. Amen.

Interceding for Sisters
Father, I also pray for the sisters around me. You know that many women are seeking to bear witness for You in different places every day. Some are caring for family at home. Some are walking with integrity at work. Some are facing pressure in school or community. Some are serving quietly in church. Some are learning to speak with both gentleness and truth in online spaces.
Lord, strengthen them. If they are weary from long obedience, renew them. If they are discouraged because they are misunderstood, comfort them. If they feel their witness is too small, remind them that salt may be small yet has flavor, and light may be gentle yet still shines. Help us encourage one another, not compare with one another, but shine for You faithfully in the places You have given us. Amen.
Shining in Ordinary Places
After reading Matthew 5:13-16, we hear Jesus clearly say, “Ye are the salt of the earth… Ye are the light of the world.” This is not a title for only a few especially spiritual people; it is the identity of every person who follows the Lord. Salt does not need to be large to bring flavor. Light does not need to be loud to drive back darkness.
As we close this page and return to daily life, perhaps today will not look especially dramatic. It may simply include cooking, working, caring for family, replying to messages, facing emotions, communicating with others, and fulfilling responsibilities. Yet it is precisely in these ordinary places that the Lord calls us to live as visible witnesses. An honest decision, a gentle word, a patient response, and quiet faithfulness can all become places where someone sees the light of God.
May today’s Scripture remind you not to despise the place where God has put you, and not to hide the light He has placed within you. May you carry the flavor of godly life even in the most ordinary day, quietly and truly shining for those around you, so that glory may be given to your Father in heaven.
