Bible in a Year - Women’s Thematic Reading Plan | Day 250
September 7: Matthew 13:1-23: The Sower, the Heart That Hears the Word
September 7: Matthew 13:1-23: The Sower, the Heart That Hears the Word
Women’s Bible Reading Plan Day 250. Today we read Matthew 13:1-23. The theme is “The Sower: The Heart That Hears the Word.” Through the parable of the sower, Jesus invites us to examine how the Word of God is heard, received, rooted, and made fruitful in our hearts. This page includes Matthew 13:1-23 Scripture, devotional reflection, meditation questions, a daily devotional verse, prayer, and life application.
Every day, we hear many voices. Messages on our phones, opinions on social media, comments from people around us, the demands of work and family, and the worries and comparisons within our own hearts are all speaking to us constantly. Over time, our hearts can become crowded, tired, numb, and distracted. We may hear the Word of God, yet not truly allow it to enter deeply within us.
In Matthew 13, Jesus sits by the seaside and teaches the crowd through the parable of the sower. The seed is the same seed, and the sower is the same sower, but the seed falls on different kinds of ground, and the results are completely different. Some falls by the wayside and is devoured by the birds. Some falls upon stony places and quickly springs up, but because it has no root, it withers away. Some falls among thorns and is choked by the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches. But some falls into good ground and brings forth fruit—some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold.
This parable does not first call us to judge others, but to quietly ask ourselves: What kind of soil is my heart right now? When God’s Word comes into my heart, is it kept outside by busyness and hardness? Does it remain only as a momentary feeling? Is it being choked by worries and desires? Or is it taking root deeply and slowly bearing fruit?
Matthew 13:1-23 records the parable of the sower and Jesus’ explanation of its meaning to His disciples. A sower went forth to sow, and the seed fell in four different places: by the wayside, upon stony places, among thorns, and into good ground. Through this parable, Jesus shows us that when the Word of God comes to the human heart, it may meet very different responses.
The seed that falls by the wayside represents those who hear the word of the kingdom but do not understand it; then the wicked one comes and catches away that which was sown in the heart. This reminds us that if our hearts remain hardened, distracted, or numb, God’s Word may pass through our ears without truly entering our hearts. We may hear it, yet never pause to consider it or ask the Lord to help us understand.
The seed that falls upon stony places represents those who hear the word and immediately receive it with joy, yet they have no root in themselves and endure only for a while. When tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, they are offended. This reminds us that spiritual life cannot depend only on a passing emotion. If God’s Word does not take root in our hearts, it can easily wither when pressure, trials, misunderstanding, or cost comes.
The seed that falls among thorns represents those who hear the word, but the care of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. This kind of soil may feel especially close to everyday life for many of us. It is not that we do not love God’s Word or completely reject the truth; rather, our hearts are too full. Too many worries, pursuits, comparisons, and fears crowd in, and God’s Word is pushed into a corner until it gradually loses its influence in our lives.
The seed that falls into good ground represents those who hear the word and understand it, and then bear fruit—some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Good ground is not a perfect heart, but a heart that is willing to hear, willing to understand, willing to make room for God’s Word to enter, take root, renew, and transform. Jesus’ parable invites us not only to hear the Word, but to give the Word space, depth, and a living response in our hearts.
Today’s theme, “The Sower: The Heart That Hears the Word,” invites us to examine ourselves: Does God’s Word truly have a place in my heart? Do I merely hear without understanding? Am I only moved for a moment but not rooted? Do I know the truth, yet allow worries and desires to choke it? May we come before the Lord today and ask Him to turn over the soil of our hearts, so that our lives may become good ground that bears fruit.
1 Jesus says that some seed falls by the wayside; people hear the word but do not understand it, and the wicked one catches away what was sown. Recently, when you read Scripture, listen to a sermon, or spend time in devotion, do you come with hunger and attention, or do you often rush through with a distracted heart? Are you willing to ask the Lord for a heart that truly desires to understand His Word?
2 The seed on stony ground springs up quickly, but because it has no root, it withers away. Have you ever been deeply moved by a truth, yet failed to continue in obedience and practice? When pressure, hardship, or cost comes, in what areas are you most likely to lose your spiritual footing?
3 The thorns choke the word so that it becomes unfruitful. What “thorns” are currently crowding God’s Word in your heart? Is it anxiety, money, achievement, comparison, busyness, your phone, the expectations of others, or fear about the future? Are you willing to let God prune the things that entangle you?
4 The good ground hears the word, understands it, and bears fruit. What fruit do you long for God’s Word to produce in your life? More faith, gentleness, patience, forgiveness, courage, self-control, love, or deeper obedience? How can you give God’s Word more room today?
Today, let us enter Matthew 13:1-23 with these questions. Do not treat the parable of the sower merely as a familiar story. Let it become a mirror that reveals the true condition of our hearts. The Word of the Lord is still being sown. The question is whether our hearts are willing to be turned over, loosened, cleansed, and made into soil that can bear fruit.
Let us take a quiet moment and bring before the Lord the hardness, shallowness, worries, entanglements, and longings within our hearts. Then let us begin today’s reading together.
“But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold some sixty, some thirty.”
— Matthew 13:23
13 The same day went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the sea side.
2 And great multitudes were gathered together unto him, so that he went into a ship, and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore.
3 And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow;
4 And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up:
5 Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth:
6 And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away.
7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them:
8 But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold.
9 Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.
10 And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables?
11 He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.
12 For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath.
13 Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.
14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive:
15 For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.
16 But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.
17 For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.
18 Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower.
19 When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.
20 But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it;
21 Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.
22 He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.
23 But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
✨ Thank you for walking through today’s Scripture with us, dear sister.
Matthew 13:1-23 shows us that the same seed can fall on different kinds of ground and produce completely different results. Through the parable of the sower, Jesus invites us to examine the soil of our hearts: Is God’s Word truly heard, understood, kept, and made fruitful in us? Now let us bring our hearts before God and ask Him to personally cultivate, cleanse, and renew us.

Ask the Lord to Soften a Hardened and Distracted Heart
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me through the parable of the sower that Your Word is still being sown, and that You are still willing to speak to me. Yet I confess that many times my heart is like the wayside—hard, hurried, and distracted. When I read Scripture, my mind easily wanders. When I listen to Your Word, I may hear familiar phrases without truly pausing to consider them. When You remind me, I sometimes use busyness, excuses, and self-protection to keep Your Word from entering deeply.
Lord, have mercy on me and soften my heart. Do not let me simply have access to many spiritual resources without being truly changed by Your Word. Give me a teachable heart. When I hear, help me to consider. When I understand, help me to obey. When I am corrected, help me to repent. May Your Word not merely pass through my ears, but truly enter my heart. Amen.
✨
Ask the Lord to Let His Word Take Root Within Me
Lord, You also remind me that the seed on stony ground quickly sprang up, but because it had no root, it withered away. Many times, I too may be moved during worship, devotion, a sermon, or a passage of Scripture, but if I do not continue to meditate, practice, and obey, those moments of conviction are quickly washed away by the pressures of life.
Help me not to remain only in temporary enthusiasm. May Your Word take root downward within me, entering my real thoughts, emotions, choices, and relationships. When difficulty comes, when others do not understand, or when obedience requires a cost, help me not to draw back immediately, but to stand firm by Your Word. May my faith not be only leaves on the surface, but faith with roots, depth, and living strength. Amen.

Ask the Lord to Prune the Thorns That Choke Life
Heavenly Father, Jesus said that the care of this world and the deceitfulness of riches can choke the word and make it unfruitful. Lord, this truth honestly exposes my heart. My heart is often filled with many things: worry about the future, comparison with others, the pursuit of security, fear of falling behind, concern about what people think, distraction from my phone and information, and even using busyness as proof of my worth.
Help me to see these thorns and no longer treat them as normal. Please prune the worries, desires, fears, and distractions that entangle my heart. Help me to put You first again and place Your Word in the deepest part of my heart. May my life not be so crowded by the world that it cannot bear fruit, but may I find freedom and rest again in Your presence and bear fruit that pleases You. Amen.

Interceding for Sisters
Heavenly Father, I also pray for the sisters around me. We all live in a time full of voices and pressure. Many people do not lack the desire to draw near to You, but their hearts are too tired, too crowded, and too anxious. Some sisters are busy every day with family, work, children, and service, and can hardly find space to be still and listen to You. Some read Scripture while carrying heavy worries and find it difficult to truly rest. Some have heard many messages, yet still feel that their lives have not changed.
Lord, please care for them personally. Help us learn together to make room for Your Word—not out of religious pressure, but because we truly need You. Awaken in us a hunger for truth. May the sisters be renewed, comforted, healed, and slowly made fruitful through Scripture reading, prayer, worship, and sharing with one another. Amen.
After reading Matthew 13:1-23, we see that the problem is not whether the seed has life, because God’s Word is full of power. The key question is whether our hearts are willing to become soil that can receive and carry the Word of God. A hardened heart allows the Word to be taken away. A shallow heart leaves the Word without root. A crowded heart allows the Word to be choked by thorns. But a soft, open, understanding, and obedient heart can bear real fruit.
As we turn this page, we also return to our daily lives. Our phones will still ring. Pressure will still come. Worries will still knock at the door. The voices of the world will still compete for our attention. But remember this: every day, you can bring your heart back before the Lord and ask Him to turn it over, loosen it, cleanse it, and water it, so that your life will not merely be one that has heard many messages, but one that is truly shaped by the Word of God.
May today’s Scripture remind you: do not only ask how much you have heard; ask what fruit God’s Word is bearing within you. May your heart become good ground, and may the Lord’s Word take deep root, bearing the fruit of faith, love, patience, holiness, and hope in ordinary days.
