Day 194 of the Women’s Bible Plan: Read Psalm 127 and reflect on the truth that children are an heritage of the LORD. Through this psalm, we are invited to see family, parenting, work, protection, and the next generation under God’s care. Children are not possessions to control, but lives entrusted by God, to be loved, guided, prayed for, and released into His purposes.
Family can be one of the deepest places of blessing, but it can also be one of the places where we feel most tired, anxious, and powerless. We want to build a healthy home. We want to raise children well. We want our loved ones to feel safe. We want the next generation to walk in the right way. Yet real family life is not always simple. Children have their own personalities. Parents have their own weaknesses. Homes carry many pressures. The future holds many unknowns we cannot control.
Psalm 127 begins by lifting our eyes back to the Lord: “Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it.” This does not mean parents should not work hard, nor does it mean family responsibilities do not matter. Rather, it reminds us that what truly holds a home together is not human anxiety or control, but the Lord’s own building and keeping.
When the psalmist says that “children are an heritage of the LORD,” he moves our hearts from ownership to stewardship, from control to trust. Children are not projects meant to fulfill a parent’s expectations, nor proof of a parent’s worth. They are lives given by God and belonging to God. We are called to raise them with love, truth, prayer, and example, trusting that the Lord knows them better than we do and can guide their path more faithfully than we can.
Psalm 127 is a Song of degrees for Solomon. In just a few verses, this psalm places family, labor, protection, sleep, children, and the future under the sovereignty of God. The psalmist first reminds us that unless the LORD builds the house, the builders labor in vain; unless the LORD keeps the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. Then he turns to the next generation, declaring that children are an heritage of the LORD, and the fruit of the womb is His reward.
For parents, this psalm brings deep comfort and an important reminder. The comfort is this: our homes are not meant to be held together by our strength alone, and the growth of our children does not rest entirely on our shoulders. The reminder is this: we must not treat children as our possessions, nor replace faith, prayer, and guidance with anxiety, comparison, and control.
The image of children as arrows is powerful. An arrow is not meant to stay forever in the warrior’s hand. One day, it is released toward a purpose. A parent’s calling is not to keep children close forever or force our own dreams upon them, but to help shape them while they are still in our care—so that they may be strengthened by love, formed by truth, guided by faith, and one day stand before God as useful vessels in His hand.
For sisters who do not have children, are single, are not yet married, or carry grief and regret in family relationships, this psalm does not exclude you. It also invites us to think about spiritual family in a broader way. God calls many women to bless the next generation through prayer, companionship, teaching, care, mentoring, and example. Whether in the home, church, fellowship, school, or in the lives of younger people around us, we can all take part in God’s work of building the next generation.
Today’s theme, “Children Like Arrows,” invites us to reflect: Am I willing to acknowledge that my family needs the Lord to build it? Am I willing to see children and the next generation as God’s heritage rather than as life projects I can control? Am I willing to move from anxiety to surrender, from control to watchful prayer, and from human striving to God’s grace in family life?
1 Psalm 127 says, “Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it.” Are there places in your family life where you are working very hard but feeling deeply weary? Are you willing to entrust the building of your home to the Lord again and let Him become its foundation?
2 Scripture says that children are an heritage of the LORD. How do you view children or the next generation? Is it easy for you to see them as your responsibility, achievement, pressure, or extension of yourself? Is God inviting you today to see them again through the lens of stewardship?
3 The psalmist compares children to arrows in the hand of a mighty man. Are you willing to learn not only to keep children close, but to help them know God, fear Him, be shaped by truth, and walk toward the path He has prepared for them? In this process, where might you need to release control and watch over them more through prayer?
As you read Psalm 127 today, do not see it only as a passage about children. Let it also remind you that the building of the home, the labor of parents, the future of children, and the direction of the next generation all need to be placed in God’s hands.
Take a quiet breath before you begin. Bring your family, children, parenting role, spiritual influence, and concerns and hopes for the next generation before the Lord, and let His Word meet you there.
“Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.”
— Psalm 127:3
127 Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.
2 It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.
3 Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.
4 As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth.
5 Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.
✨ Thank you for walking through today’s Scripture with us, dear sister.
Psalm 127 reminds us that a home is not sustained by human anxiety, and children are not possessions parents can control. Unless the LORD builds the house, human labor becomes vain; unless the LORD keeps the city, human watchfulness cannot truly secure the future. Now, let us bring our homes, children, parent-child relationships, the next generation, and all our concerns before God in prayer.

Asking God to Build My Home
Father, thank You for reminding me through Psalm 127 that the true foundation of a home is not my ability, planning, anxiety, or control, but Your own work of building. So often, I want to manage the home well, meet everyone’s needs, guide children in the right way, and keep my loved ones from harm. Yet I quickly discover that my strength is limited and my heart grows tired.
Lord, become the Lord of my home again. May my family not merely maintain outward peace through human effort, but be built in Your love and truth. Enter into our conversations, schedules, decisions, conflicts, and weaknesses. Where there is tension, give gentleness. Where there is misunderstanding, give communication. Where there is hurt, give healing. Where there is weariness, give rest. May my home not be driven by anxiety, but upheld by Your grace. Amen.

Seeing Children Through the Eyes of Stewardship
Lord, Your Word says that children are an heritage of the LORD. Help me remember that children first belong to You, and are then entrusted to parents and caregivers for a season. Whether I am a mother, elder, teacher, servant in ministry, or someone walking with the next generation in a spiritual family, help me not to bind them with my expectations or wound them through comparison and control.
Give me wisdom to love, guide, correct, and nurture them. Teach me also when to release them into Your hands. If I control too much because I am afraid, forgive me. If I lose patience because I am tired, renew me. If I become anxious because of a child’s choices, teach me to replace fear with prayer. Let me see them not as my finished product, but as Your heritage—lives precious to You. Amen.

Praying for the Next Generation to Become Arrows in God’s Hand
Father, the psalmist says that children of the youth are as arrows in the hand of a mighty man. Lord, may the next generation be shaped in Your hand to become people of direction, faith, truth, and love. Help me not to care only about their grades, performance, future, or outward success, but to care deeply that they know You, fear You, love Your Word, and desire to walk in Your ways.
Make our homes places where faith is passed down. Let children and young people see real faith in us, not merely hear spiritual slogans. Let them see the power of prayer, the honesty of repentance, the action of love, and the peace of depending on You. When one day they are sent out by You, may they not carry empty self-confidence, but identity, calling, and courage from You. Amen.

Interceding for Families
Father, I also pray for the families and sisters around me. Some are weary in parenting. Some are anxious about their children’s faith, health, studies, emotions, or future. Some are experiencing tension with parents or children. Some feel lonely under the weight of marriage and family responsibilities. Some long for children and are still waiting, while others carry pain and regret in parent-child relationships.
Lord, comfort, support, and build every home. Give parents wisdom and patience. Give children security and teachable hearts. Give husbands and wives love that supports one another. Give true comfort to sisters who are waiting or hurting. Help us in the church and spiritual community to watch over the next generation together—not only criticizing young people, but supporting them through prayer, companionship, example, and truth. Amen.
After reading Psalm 127, we are reminded that the home is not built by human labor alone, and the future of children is not secured by parental anxiety. Children are an heritage of the LORD. They are not private possessions for parents to own and control. They are like arrows in the hand of a mighty man—shaped by love, guided by truth, and eventually released toward the direction God has prepared.
As we close this page and return to real family life, perhaps you will continue facing challenges in communication, the weariness of parenting, uncertainty about a child’s future, or pressure in family relationships. Remember this: God has not asked you to hold the whole household together by your own strength. He invites you to build faithfully, and also to surrender humbly. He calls you to nurture seriously, and also reminds you that children ultimately belong to Him.
May today’s Scripture remind you not to let anxiety become the lord of your home, and not to let control take the place of faith. In every chore, conversation, correction, prayer, and tear, may you remember that the Lord who truly builds the house is with you. May your home be established in His hand, and may the next generation be shaped in His hand as arrows aimed toward His will.
