Day 121 of the Women’s Bible Plan: Read Proverbs Chapter 5 and reflect on how God’s wisdom teaches us to guard our hearts, flee temptation, honor the marriage covenant, and protect marital joy through faithfulness. Today’s theme belongs to the section on marriage and husband-wife relationships, helping women consider how loyalty, boundaries, purity, and reverence for God preserve love in daily life.
Joy in marriage is not sustained by romance alone, nor can it rest only on passing emotions. A lasting marriage needs the protection of God’s Word. It also requires daily faithfulness in our thoughts, eyes, words, boundaries, and choices.
Proverbs Chapter 5 speaks directly and seriously. It warns us not to take temptation lightly, not to allow the heart to drift slowly, and not to assume that hidden choices will have no consequences. Sin often does not enter a person’s life all at once. It begins with small compromises in the heart. Likewise, cracks in a marriage often do not form in a single day, but slowly grow through repeated moments of carelessness, lack of boundaries, silence, secrecy, or refusal to turn away.
Yet this chapter is not only a warning; it is also protection. God does not seek to take joy away from us. He desires to guard the intimate relationship He created. He calls us away from paths that break life apart and invites husband and wife to enjoy faithfulness, satisfaction, and joy within covenant love.
Proverbs Chapter 5 is an important teaching on wisdom, purity, boundaries, and faithfulness in marriage. The chapter begins with a call to pay attention to wisdom and incline the ear to understanding. It then warns against the temptation of the strange woman. Her words may drip like honey and sound smooth, gentle, attractive, and emotionally moving, but the end of that path is bitterness, death, and distance from the way of life.
This chapter honestly reveals how deceptive sin can be. Many dangerous relationships, emotional attachments, hidden desires, secret fantasies, and ungodly choices do not appear frightening at first. They may even feel sweet, comforting, exciting, or like compensation for loneliness and disappointment. But God’s Word teaches us not to look only at the feeling of the moment. We must also look at the direction and the end of the road. If a path leads us away from God, away from the marriage covenant, away from honesty, and away from holiness, then no matter how attractive it seems at the beginning, it is not the path of life.
Proverbs Chapter 5 also gives a positive call to cherish faithfulness within marriage: “Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.” This is not a cold rule, but God’s protection over marital joy. God does not view marriage as a dry duty, but as a covenant relationship that can be blessed, treasured, and enjoyed. Faithfulness is not the loss of freedom; it is the guarding of love, so that husband and wife are not consumed by deception, comparison, selfish desire, or outside temptation.
For women, this chapter is deeply practical. Whether we are married, preparing for marriage, single, divorced, widowed, or living in a complicated relationship season, God calls us to guard our hearts. We need to discern which words, relationships, media, emotional attachments, or hidden expectations are quietly pulling our hearts away from Him. We also need to cherish our spouses in marriage, maintain wise boundaries, cultivate real intimacy, and not allow disappointment, loneliness, comparison, or temptation to slowly erode love.
Today’s theme, “Guarding the Heart and Remaining Faithful to Your Spouse,” invites us to reflect: Am I allowing God’s Word to shine light on my heart? Am I taking seriously the faithfulness and joy of marriage? Am I willing to turn away from dangerous paths before a fall occurs?
1 Proverbs Chapter 5 reminds us that temptation often tastes sweet at first but becomes bitter in the end. Have you noticed any relationship, conversation, content, emotional dependence, or hidden fantasy that seems harmless or comforting at first, but may slowly pull your heart away from God and His ways?
2 The passage says that our ways are before the eyes of the Lord. How does this truth help you reconsider the choices no one else sees, the content on your phone, the thoughts in your heart, the boundaries in your relationships, and faithfulness within marriage?
3 “Rejoice with the wife of thy youth” reminds us that marriage must be cherished, cultivated, and protected. If you are married, how can you more actively treasure your spouse, protect intimacy, and reject comparison and temptation? If you are single or in another relationship season, how can you prepare a heart that is faithful, pure, and reverent before God?
As you read Proverbs Chapter 5 today, do not see it only as a warning for someone else or for “serious sin.” Let God’s Word gently but truthfully examine your own heart. May the Lord help us walk with wisdom in relationships, stay watchful before temptation, remain faithful in marriage, and keep love holy before Him.
Take a quiet breath before you begin. Bring your thoughts, emotions, relationships, marriage, loneliness, desires, and boundaries before the Lord, and let His Word meet you there.
“Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.”
— Proverbs 5:18
5 My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow thine ear to my understanding:
2 That thou mayest regard discretion, and that thy lips may keep knowledge.
3 For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil:
4 But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword.
5 Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell.
6 Lest thou shouldest ponder the path of life, her ways are moveable, that thou canst not know them.
7 Hear me now therefore, O ye children, and depart not from the words of my mouth.
8 Remove thy way far from her, and come not nigh the door of her house:
9 Lest thou give thine honour unto others, and thy years unto the cruel:
10 Lest strangers be filled with thy wealth; and thy labours be in the house of a stranger;
11 And thou mourn at the last, when thy flesh and thy body are consumed,
12 And say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof;
13 And have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined mine ear to them that instructed me!
14 I was almost in all evil in the midst of the congregation and assembly.
15 Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well.
16 Let thy fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of waters in the streets.
17 Let them be only thine own, and not strangers' with thee.
18 Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.
19 Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love.
20 And why wilt thou, my son, be ravished with a strange woman, and embrace the bosom of a stranger?
21 For the ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord, and he pondereth all his goings.
22 His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins.
23 He shall die without instruction; and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.
✨ Thank you for walking through today’s Scripture with us, dear sister.
Proverbs Chapter 5 reminds us that wisdom protects the heart. It teaches us to turn away from temptation that seems sweet at first but becomes bitter in the end. It also calls us to treasure the marriage covenant and to preserve love and joy through faithfulness. Now, let us bring our hearts, marriages, relationships, emotions, and hidden temptations before the Lord in prayer.
🩷
Asking God to Help Me Guard My Heart
Father, thank You for reminding me through Proverbs Chapter 5 that my heart needs to be guarded by Your Word. So often, temptation does not pull a person away all at once. It begins with one thought, one flattering word, one quiet dissatisfaction, one relationship without clear boundaries, or one hidden desire. Lord, please shine Your light on me and show me the true condition of my heart.
If there are fantasies I should no longer feed, cleanse me. If I have lost healthy boundaries in certain relationships, warn me. If loneliness, disappointment, or feeling unseen has made me seek comfort in the wrong places, bring me back to You. May my heart not be deceived by false sweetness, but be satisfied in Your love and protected by Your truth. Amen.
✨
Remaining Faithful and Joyful in Marriage
Lord, help me honor the marriage covenant. Your Word says, “Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.” You do not desire marriage to become a heavy bondage, but a relationship where husband and wife experience blessed joy through faithfulness, commitment, and mutual cherishing.
If I am married, help me not to take my spouse for granted. Do not let me see only his weaknesses while forgetting gratitude. Do not let comparison, coldness, complaint, or avoidance slowly damage our relationship. Teach me to replace silent resentment with honest communication, emotional distance with gentle nearness, and hidden temptation with faithful love. May my marriage be refreshed, protected, and renewed by Your grace. Amen.
🧑🧑🧒🧒
Father, I also pray for the sisters around me and for their marriages, families, and emotional relationships. You know that many relationships are under pressure. Some couples have grown distant because of busyness. Some people are easily drawn toward wrong comfort in loneliness. Some marriages are being worn down by distrust, comparison, coldness, temptation, or past wounds.
Lord, protect their hearts and protect their homes. Help husbands and wives learn again to communicate, forgive, draw near, and cherish one another. If anyone is walking near the edge of danger, please warn, stop, and lead her back in time. Help us as sisters to watch over one another in love—not spreading gossip, not encouraging emotional compromise, not dismissing the seriousness of marriage struggles, but reminding, supporting, and praying for one another in truth and grace. Amen.

Praying for Marriages and Families in This Generation
Compassionate God, I also pray for marriages and families in this generation. We live in a world that often treats faithfulness lightly, magnifies desire, encourages instant satisfaction, and wounds many people through comparison, pornography, affairs, broken relationships, and emotional confusion. Many couples have lost trust. Many children suffer through family brokenness. Many people do not know that true love requires commitment, holiness, and responsibility.
Lord, have mercy on this generation. May Your truth protect hearts again. May Your love heal broken marriages. May Your grace help people turn back from sin and shame. Raise up churches to guard marriage, walk with families, and support those who are wounded. Let more people see that faithfulness is not the loss of freedom, but the way to true joy and safety in the love You designed. Amen.
After reading Proverbs Chapter 5, we see that God’s Word is not a cold restriction, but loving protection. It warns us not to underestimate the sweetness of temptation or the danger of a drifting heart. At the same time, it calls us to cherish faithfulness in marriage, so love can be nourished, guarded, and blessed within covenant.
As we close this page and return to real life, perhaps today you need to rebuild a boundary, stop an unhealthy emotional attachment, step away from content that pulls your heart, or speak honestly with God about coldness and temptation within. Perhaps you need to express gratitude to your spouse, repair communication, or draw near again in love. Remember this: marital joy is not preserved by accident. It is protected through daily choices of faithfulness.
May today’s Scripture remind you that your heart is precious and worthy of being guarded by God’s Word. Your marriage and relationships are also precious and worthy of being protected with faithfulness, wisdom, and holiness. May the Lord lead you away from paths that break life apart and into the love that brings purity, freedom, and joy before Him.
