Day 242 of the Women’s Bible Plan: Read Matthew 7:24-29 and reflect on the Lord Jesus’ closing parable in the Sermon on the Mount. Through the picture of two houses with two different foundations, this devotional helps us consider what it means not only to hear the words of Jesus, but also to do them.
We often enjoy hearing good messages, saving meaningful quotes, and agreeing with spiritual principles. But at the end of the Sermon on the Mount, the Lord Jesus does not only ask, “Have you heard My words?” He presses deeper: “Will you do them?”
Matthew 7:24-29 gives us a picture of two people building houses. One hears the sayings of Jesus and does them, and is like a wise man who built his house upon a rock. The other hears His sayings and does them not, and is like a foolish man who built his house upon the sand. On an ordinary day, both houses may appear to be standing. But when the rain descends, the floods come, and the winds blow, the difference in foundation is revealed.
This passage reminds us that a stable spiritual life is not built merely by how much teaching we hear, but by whether the words of Christ truly become the foundation of our daily life. True wisdom is not only knowing more; it is willing obedience. True security is not a life without storms, but a life built upon Christ and His Word.
Matthew 7:24-29 is the conclusion of the Sermon on the Mount. After teaching about the life of the kingdom, the Lord Jesus gives a simple and vivid picture: whoever hears His sayings and does them is like a wise man who built his house upon a rock. The rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house, yet it did not fall, because it was founded upon a rock.
In contrast, whoever hears His sayings and does them not is like a foolish man who built his house upon the sand. That house also faced rain, floods, and winds, but it fell, and great was the fall of it. Both builders heard the words of Jesus. The difference was not in hearing, but in doing.
This is an important reminder for us. We may attend church, read Scripture, listen to sermons, take notes, and be familiar with spiritual language. Yet Jesus is not only concerned with how much we have heard. He asks whether His words are shaping our choices, relationships, money, speech, time, emotions, service, and everyday life. Hearing without doing can make us think we are secure, but the true foundation is revealed when the storm comes.
This passage does not say that those who obey the Lord will never experience storms. Both houses faced the rain, floods, and winds. Those who trust and obey Christ still encounter trials, pressure, disappointment, relational tension, daily burdens, and an unknown future. The difference is that a life built on the words of Christ does not collapse in the storm, because its foundation is not feeling, ability, circumstances, or human approval, but Christ Himself.
Today’s theme, “Build Your House upon the Rock,” invites us to reflect: Do we only enjoy hearing the words of Jesus, or are we willing to let His words change our lives? Do we speak of trusting God only when life is easy, or do we still choose to obey Him in the storm? To hear the Lord’s words and do them is the way to build our lives upon the rock.
1 Jesus says the wise person not only hears His words, but does them. Is there a word from God you have recently read or heard that you know you should obey, but have not yet truly acted upon?
2 Both houses faced storms. Are you experiencing rain, floods, or winds in your life right now—relational pressure, family burdens, work challenges, emotional lows, or a test of faith? How does this passage call you back to stand firmly on the Lord’s Word?
3 A house on sand may look quick, convenient, and impressive at first. Are there areas of your life where your foundation is actually built on people’s approval, personal plans, outward achievement, emotional feelings, or temporary security? Is God inviting you to surrender those foundations to Him again?
As you read Matthew 7:24-29 today, do not treat this passage only as a familiar parable. Let it become a gentle but honest examination: Where is my life truly built? After hearing the words of Jesus, am I willing to do them?
Take a quiet breath before you begin. Bring your foundations, the storms you are facing, and the areas where obedience has been delayed before the Lord, and let His Word meet you there.
“Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man.”
— Matthew 7:24
24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:
27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.
28 And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine:
29 For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.
✨ Thank you for walking through today’s Scripture with us, dear sister.
Matthew 7:24-29 reminds us that a truly stable life is not one that only hears the words of Jesus, but one that hears and obeys. The Lord compares such a life to a house built upon the rock. Even when the rain descends, the floods come, and the winds blow, it does not fall. Now, let us bring our foundation, obedience, storms, and daily choices before God in prayer.
🩷
Not Only Hearing, but Obeying
Father, thank You for reminding me through the words of Jesus that hearing is not the end; obedience reveals the foundation of my life. Lord, I confess that many times I enjoy words of comfort and I am willing to learn spiritual truths, but I do not always want Your Word to truly change the way I live.
Give me a soft and obedient heart. Let me not only feel moved for a moment, but respond to You in the concrete choices of each day. If You call me to forgive, help me stop holding on to bitterness. If You call me to honesty, help me stop covering things with excuses. If You call me to trust, help me stop being ruled by fear. If You call me to love, help me begin with real actions. May Your Word not remain only in my ears, but enter my steps. Amen.

Standing on the Rock in the Storm
Lord, You did not say that the house built on the rock would never face storms. You know that my life also has moments of rain, floods, and winds. Some pressure comes from family, some from relationships, some from work, and some from health, emotions, finances, or the unknown future. When the storm comes, I easily become anxious and try to grasp visible things for security.
Help me return to You in the storm. Do not let me build my peace on smooth circumstances, and do not let me place my hope in human approval or my own ability. Remind me that the only foundation that will not collapse is You. Strengthen me through Your Word, so that in pressure I will not lose direction, in trials I will not walk away from You, and in weakness I will still know I can depend on You. Amen.

Tearing Down False Foundations of Sand
Father, please shine Your light on the sandy foundations in my life. Perhaps I have built my security on praise from others, my sense of worth on achievement, my peace on control, my joy on circumstances, or my hope on my own plans. These things may seem to support me for a while, but they cannot hold my life in a real storm.
Lord, help me be willing to be rebuilt by You. Even if removing old foundations is uncomfortable, give me courage. Keep me from pursuing only outward stability. Teach me to be rooted in You. May my heart, my home, my service, my relationships, and my future be built on Christ, the unshakable Rock. Amen.

Interceding for Families
Father, I also pray for the sisters around me who are going through storms. Some are facing family pressure. Some are wounded in relationships. Some are exhausted by work and responsibilities. Some appear strong on the outside, yet inwardly feel close to collapse. You know each one’s true situation, and You know where each one needs Your sustaining grace.
Lord, strengthen them through Your Word. Help them not only hear comfort, but truly experience Your presence; not only know the truth, but receive strength to walk in it. Give them spiritual companions who can support, remind, and pray for them in the storm. Help us become sisters who stand together on the Rock, not people who only offer surface-level advice. Amen.
After reading Matthew 7:24-29, we see that Jesus did not call everyone who heard His words wise. True wisdom is hearing and doing. Storms come to every life, but storms also reveal where our lives are truly built.
As we close this page and return to real life, perhaps there are choices waiting for you today: whether to speak honestly, whether to forgive again, whether to refuse a temptation, whether to carry a responsibility faithfully, or whether to repair a relationship with love. Remember this: every act of obedience to the Lord’s Word is another way of building your life upon the Rock.
May today’s Scripture remind you not to be satisfied with merely hearing, feeling moved, or agreeing. May the words of Jesus enter your daily life and become your foundation. When the storms come, may you stand not by your own strength, but because your life is built upon Christ the Rock.
