Day 130 of the Women’s Bible Plan: Read Song of Solomon Chapter 2 and reflect on the beauty of love, the wisdom of waiting, and the importance of honoring God’s timing in romantic relationships and marriage. Through the repeated reminder, “stir not up, nor awake my love, till he please,” this devotional helps women consider purity, patience, boundaries, and the gentle maturing of love in the right season.
Love is beautiful, but it also needs to be treasured and protected. It is not something to be rushed, controlled, consumed, or forced. It is not strong enough to carry a lifelong relationship if it is built only on emotion, romance, or impulse. True and beautiful love needs the right time, a mature heart, godly boundaries, and the wisdom to wait.
Song of Solomon Chapter 2 is full of springtime, fragrance, voices, longing, delight, and mutual affection between the beloved and her lover. This chapter shows us the sweetness of love, but it also gives us a deeply important reminder: “stir not up, nor awake my love, till he please.” This is not coldness or emotional denial. It is a reminder that love has a season of maturity, and intimacy has its proper time.
In a world that often rushes into relationships, moves quickly into intimacy, and seeks immediate fulfillment, Song of Solomon Chapter 2 invites us to learn the beauty of waiting. Waiting does not reject love; it honors love. Waiting does not deny intimacy; it protects intimacy. Waiting does not make the heart cold; it allows love to mature in the time and way that honors God.
Song of Solomon Chapter 2 continues the poetic exchange of affection, admiration, and longing between the beloved and her lover. The woman describes herself as the rose of Sharon and the lily of the valleys. The man praises her as a lily among thorns. Their love is full of delight and belonging: “My beloved is mine, and I am his.”
The imagery in this chapter is beautiful: the apple tree, the banqueting house, love as a banner, winter past, rain gone, flowers appearing, birds singing, and the voice of the turtle dove heard in the land. Love is portrayed like spring—full of life, freshness, beauty, and awakening. Yet just as flowers cannot be forced open before their season, love is not meant to be forced, rushed, or awakened before its proper time.
In the midst of this sweetness, the chapter gives an important warning: “stir not up, nor awake my love, till he please.” This phrase appears more than once in Song of Solomon, like a gentle but firm boundary. It reminds us not to awaken love through impulse, pressure, curiosity, loneliness, or desire before it is ready.
Today’s theme, “The Waiting of Love,” is especially meaningful in the category of marriage and relationships. For unmarried women, this chapter reminds us not to rush into a relationship, push for an outcome, or cross God-honoring boundaries because of anxiety, comparison, age pressure, or emotional emptiness. For married women, it also reminds us that intimacy, communication, trust, and tenderness within marriage need time, respect, gentleness, and patience. They cannot be forced through control, demands, or resentment.
True love does not rush another person to satisfy the self. It learns before God to respect, protect, cherish, and allow love to grow in a safe, holy, and mature environment. God-given love is beautiful, and the more beautiful something is, the more wisely it needs to be guarded.
1 Song of Solomon Chapter 2 contains tender expressions of love, but also the reminder not to awaken love before its time. How do you understand waiting in love? Have you ever felt tempted to rush a relationship, force an outcome, or cross a boundary you knew should be guarded because of loneliness, anxiety, comparison, or fear of missing out?
2 The verse says, “My beloved is mine, and I am his.” This speaks of joyful belonging, not controlling possession. In your relationships—whether dating, marriage, or your hopes for a future spouse—have you ever misunderstood love as control, dependence, or expecting another person to fill what only God can fill? Is God inviting you to learn a healthier, freer, and more God-fearing love?
3 Song of Solomon Chapter 2 uses springtime to describe the season when love awakens and blossoms. What season are you in right now? Are you waiting, preparing, healing, learning to communicate again, or cultivating tenderness and intimacy in marriage? Are you willing to let God take part in the growth of this relationship instead of pushing it forward only through your own emotions and expectations?
As you read Song of Solomon Chapter 2 today, do not only see the romance of love. Also notice the wisdom God gives: beautiful love must be cherished and waited for; intimate relationships need both passion and boundaries; belonging in marriage needs sweetness, but also reverence before God.
Take a quiet breath before you begin. Bring your hopes, struggles, desires, fears, expectations, and boundaries in love, marriage, and intimacy before the Lord, and let His Word meet you there.
“I charge you, O ye daughters of Jerusalem, by the roes, and by the hinds of the field, that ye stir not up, nor awake my love, till he please.”
— Song of Solomon 2:7
2 I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys.
2 As the lily among thorns, so is my love among the daughters.
3 As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste.
4 He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love.
5 Stay me with flagons, comfort me with apples: for I am sick of love.
6 His left hand is under my head, and his right hand doth embrace me.
7 I charge you, O ye daughters of Jerusalem, by the roes, and by the hinds of the field, that ye stir not up, nor awake my love, till he please.
8 The voice of my beloved! behold, he cometh leaping upon the mountains, skipping upon the hills.
9 My beloved is like a roe or a young hart: behold, he standeth behind our wall, he looketh forth at the windows, shewing himself through the lattice.
10 My beloved spake, and said unto me, Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away.
11 For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone;
12 The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land;
13 The fig tree putteth forth her green figs, and the vines with the tender grape give a good smell. Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away.
14 O my dove, that art in the clefts of the rock, in the secret places of the stairs, let me see thy countenance, let me hear thy voice; for sweet is thy voice, and thy countenance is comely.
15 Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines: for our vines have tender grapes.
16 My beloved is mine, and I am his: he feedeth among the lilies.
17 Until the day break, and the shadows flee away, turn, my beloved, and be thou like a roe or a young hart upon the mountains of Bether.
✨ Thank you for walking through today’s Scripture with us, dear sister.
Song of Solomon Chapter 2 shows us the beauty of love and the sweetness of intimacy, while also giving us wisdom about waiting and boundaries. God-given love is not meant to be forced by impulse or sustained by pressure. It matures in His timing, truth, and holiness. Now, let us bring our view of love, our marriage relationships, our desires for intimacy, and our hearts in waiting before the Lord in prayer.
🩷
Asking God to Teach Me the Season of Love
Father, thank You for reminding me through Song of Solomon Chapter 2 that love is beautiful and needs to grow in the right season. You created me with the desire to love and be loved, and You see my longing for companionship, intimacy, marriage, and being cherished. Lord, help me not to rush love out of anxiety, push a relationship out of comparison, or cross the boundaries that please You because of loneliness.
If I am waiting for the right relationship, teach me to prepare my heart in the waiting instead of losing discernment through impatience. If I am already married, help me respect the rhythm in which love grows. Keep me from forcing intimacy through control, complaint, or demands, and teach me to rebuild connection through gentleness, honesty, and patience. Help me believe that Your timing is not delay, but protection; Your boundaries are not deprivation, but blessing. Amen.
✨
Asking God to Purify My Understanding of Love
Lord, Your Word says, “My beloved is mine, and I am his.” This is the joy of belonging, not selfish possession. Please shine Your light on the ways I may have misunderstood love. Sometimes I may treat love as the source of my security, use relationships to fill my emptiness, or expect another person to meet every longing in my heart. Sometimes, because I fear loss, I may try to control, test, compare, or hold too tightly.
Please purify my heart and teach me to love with Your love. Help me know that true love does not only ask, “What can you give me?” but seeks to honor, protect, and bless the other person in truth. Heal the anxiety that comes from a lack of love, and remove the fear and insecurity I carry in relationships. Let me first be satisfied in You, so that I can enter relationships with a healthier, freer, and more mature heart. Amen.
🧑🧑🧒🧒
Father, I also pray for the sisters around me. Some are waiting for love with both hope and fear. Some are dating and learning discernment and boundaries. Some feel lonely, tired, or disappointed in marriage. Some have been hurt in relationships and find it hard to trust intimacy again.
Lord, please care for them personally. May unmarried sisters not make hurried choices because of pressure, nor lower spiritual boundaries because of loneliness. May sisters in dating relationships have wisdom to discern and courage to guard purity. May married sisters receive love and patience from You in their marriages. May wounded sisters be gently healed by You and learn to believe again that healthy love is still possible in You. Help us accompany one another without rushing, comparing, or judging one another’s relationship journey, but instead watching over one another with prayer and sincerity. Amen.

Praying for Marriages, Families, and Relationships
Compassionate God, I also pray for marriages, families, and intimate relationships in this world. Many people have been wounded in love, disappointed in marriage, or burdened by brokenness and loneliness in the family. Many young people are growing up in confused values and do not know how to understand love, the body, boundaries, commitment, and holiness.
Lord, help people rediscover the love You designed. May marriages be marked by faithfulness and respect. May young people have wisdom and protection before entering relationships. May the wounded be healed, and may those who have been used or harmed be rescued. Raise up Your Church and Your people to accompany this generation with both truth and grace. Help people not treat love as something to consume, the body as something to trade, or relationships as tools to fill emptiness. Lead us to know true love, covenant love, and holy love in You. Amen.
After reading Song of Solomon Chapter 2, we see the beauty of love and hear the wisdom of this reminder: “stir not up, nor awake my love, till he please.” Love is not better simply because it moves faster, nor is it truer simply because it feels intense. Truly beautiful love needs time to mature, boundaries to protect it, and God’s truth to cleanse and guide it.
As we close this page and return to our own lives, perhaps you are waiting for a relationship. Perhaps you are dating and learning discernment. Perhaps you are already married and need to cultivate tenderness and intimacy again. Remember this: God does not despise your desire for love. But He loves you enough to protect you from being harmed by impulse, anxiety, or the wrong relationship.
May today’s Scripture remind you not to rush love through fear, trade love because of loneliness, or use control to prove love. May you rest securely in God’s love, wait in His timing, and guard relationships in His truth. May your love, like the flowers of spring, blossom in the right season.
