Day 208 of the Women’s Bible Plan: Read 2 Timothy 3:14-17 and reflect on Timothy, who had known the holy scriptures from childhood. Through Paul’s reminder to Timothy, this devotional helps families consider how God uses parents, grandparents, spiritual mentors, and daily life to plant the wisdom of Scripture in a child’s heart.
When raising children, we often care about many things: their education, character, health, friendships, future direction, talents, habits, and emotional growth. All of these matter. Yet today’s Scripture brings our attention back to a deeper foundation: Do our children know the Word of God? Are they learning wisdom, discernment, faith, and the way of salvation through Scripture?
Timothy did not suddenly encounter faith only as an adult. Scripture shows us that he had known the holy scriptures from childhood. In 2 Timothy Chapter 1, Paul also mentions the unfeigned faith that first dwelt in Timothy’s grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice. In other words, Timothy’s spiritual foundation was not built only from public teaching. It was also planted in the home, in ordinary life, and through the faithful witness of his mother and grandmother.
Today’s passage reminds us that the home is an important place for children to encounter Scripture. Parents do not have to explain everything perfectly. Spiritual elders do not always need to have complete answers. But when God’s Word appears again and again in family conversations, prayers, decisions, repentance, forgiveness, and daily living, a child’s heart is slowly shaped by the wisdom of Scripture.
2 Timothy 3:14-17 is one of Paul’s important exhortations to Timothy. Paul reminds him to continue in the things he has learned and been assured of, knowing of whom he has learned them. He also reminds Timothy that from a child he has known the holy scriptures, which are able to make him wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
This passage fits beautifully within the theme of “Parenting and Family.” Timothy’s spiritual growth did not appear out of nowhere. Behind his knowledge of Scripture was a heritage of faith, the influence of his mother and grandmother, and the continued encouragement and instruction of Paul as a spiritual mentor. God uses families and churches. He uses parents and spiritual guides. He uses words heard in childhood and reminders received in adulthood to form, strengthen, and equip His people.
Paul especially emphasizes that Scripture is able to make a person wise unto salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. This reminds us that giving Scripture to children is not merely about teaching good morals or familiar Bible stories. The true center of Scripture is Christ. God’s Word leads people to know Christ, trust Christ, and receive wisdom in salvation. Children need more than instruction on how to “be good.” They need to know the Savior, and they need to know that when they are weak, afraid, lost, or have failed, they can return to Jesus.
Paul also says that all Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness, so that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. In other words, Scripture is not only a storybook for childhood. It is a lifelong guide. God’s Word teaches, exposes, corrects, restores, and equips His people to become who He calls them to be.
Today’s theme, “Timothy Knew the Holy Scriptures from Childhood,” invites us to reflect: Are we willing to bring Scripture back into the center of family life? Not with legalism that pressures children, and not with spiritual language that creates shame, but in a real, gentle, and steady way that plants God’s Word in their hearts. It may be only a little each day—a bedtime passage, a prayer before meals, a verse remembered during difficulty, or a family conversation shaped by God’s truth. Yet these small seeds may become deep roots of faith in a child’s life.
1 Paul says that Timothy had known the holy scriptures from childhood. In your family, do children have natural opportunities to hear, encounter, and think about God’s Word? Are you willing to begin with one small and realistic habit that brings Scripture into daily life, not only on Sundays?
2 Timothy’s faith was influenced by his mother Eunice and grandmother Lois. Are there children, younger family members, students, or young people in your fellowship who need you to accompany them with both your life and your words as they learn to know God? Do you see that your own life of faith may quietly influence the next generation?
3 Scripture is able to make people wise unto salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. When we teach children the Bible, do we stop only at “be obedient, behave well, and try harder,” or do we help them know Jesus, trust Jesus, and understand that when they fail or feel weak, they can return to grace?
As you read 2 Timothy 3:14-17 today, do not see this passage only as an exhortation for pastors or church workers. Let it also shine into our family life. God’s Word can begin taking root in a child’s heart from an early age, and through parents, grandparents, spiritual mentors, and the church, faith can be passed from one generation to the next.
Take a quiet breath before you begin. Bring your family, children, the next generation, and your own relationship with Scripture before the Lord, and let His Word meet you there.
“And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.”
— 2 Timothy 3:15
14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;
15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.
✨ Thank you for walking through today’s Scripture with us, dear sister.
2 Timothy 3:14-17 reminds us that Timothy had known the holy scriptures from childhood, and that Scripture is able to make a person wise unto salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. God’s Word is not only knowledge; it is profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness, equipping the people of God for every good work. Now, let us bring our families, children, the next generation, and our daily life with Scripture before the Lord in prayer.

Bringing God’s Word into Everyday Family Life
Father, thank You for reminding me through Timothy’s life that the seeds of Scripture can be planted in a child’s heart from an early age. Lord, help me not to treat Bible reading only as a church activity or leave faith only for Sundays. Teach me to welcome Your Word into the daily life of the home.
Give me wisdom to share Your Word in ways children can understand, and give me patience when their response seems small or slow. May our home be filled with prayer, Scripture, worship, repentance, forgiveness, and love. Let children not only hear us talk about the Bible, but also see through our lives that Your Word is true, precious, and trustworthy. Amen.

Guiding Children to Know Christ Through Grace
Lord, Scripture is able to make us wise unto salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. Remind me that teaching children the Bible is not merely about making them follow rules, behave well, or become impressive in the eyes of others. More than anything, they need to know Jesus. They need to know that salvation comes from You, and that when they fail, feel weak, become afraid, or feel lost, they can return to the grace of Christ.
Help me not to use Scripture to crush children or use spiritual words to shame them. Instead, teach me to guide them with both truth and grace. Let there be love in discipline, gentleness in correction, and patience in holding firm to what is right. May children come to know Your holiness and Your mercy; may they understand that sin calls for repentance, and that Jesus is willing to forgive and save. Amen.

Becoming a Companion for the Next Generation
Father, behind Timothy’s faith were the influence of his mother Eunice and grandmother Lois, as well as Paul’s teaching and encouragement. Lord, help me see that my life can also influence the next generation. Whether I am a mother, grandmother, aunt, teacher, small group servant, or spiritual elder in the church, You can use me to accompany children and young people on the path of faith.
First renew my own love for Scripture. Let me not demand that children read the Bible while I remain far from Your Word. Let me not only tell others what they should do while refusing to be searched by the truth myself. Shape me first by Your Word, and then let me accompany the next generation with humility, honesty, and steady love. Use even my small faithfulness to help others know Scripture and trust Christ. Amen.

Interceding for Families
Father, I also pray for the parents, grandparents, teachers, and children’s and youth ministry workers around me. You know that raising and walking with the next generation is not easy. Sometimes children do not want to listen. Sometimes parents are tired. Sometimes families carry much pressure. Sometimes we do not know how to pass faith on naturally.
Lord, give them wisdom, patience, and joy. Help them not to give up because they cannot see immediate results, and not to pressure children harshly out of anxiety. Let every family and every church treasure the work of helping children know Scripture from an early age. Protect children’s hearts, so that in a world full of temptation and confusion, they may receive wisdom, discernment, and hope through Your Word. Amen.
After reading 2 Timothy 3:14-17, we see that Timothy had known the holy scriptures from childhood, and that Scripture was able to make him wise unto salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. A child’s foundation of faith is often not built in one day. It is gradually planted and watered by God through ordinary days, through a verse, a prayer, an example, and faithful companionship.
As we close this page and return to family life, perhaps you feel that you do not explain Scripture well enough, your Bible reading habits are not steady enough, your children are not very enthusiastic, or your home does not always feel spiritually strong. Remember this: God is not looking for perfect parents. He is pleased to use faithful seed-sowers. The small word you share today, the small prayer you offer, and the small act of consistency you continue may all be used by God.
May today’s Scripture remind you not to underestimate the power of God’s Word in a child’s heart. May we bring the wisdom of Scripture into our homes, live the grace of Christ before our children, and pray that the next generation will know God’s Word from childhood and receive true wisdom and life through faith in Christ Jesus.
🎉🎉 Congratulations on completing today's devotion! 🎉🎉
