Day 131 of the Women’s Bible Plan: Read Song of Solomon Chapter 3 and reflect on the longing, faithfulness, waiting, and commitment found in love. From the woman seeking the one she loves at night to the glory of the wedding procession, this devotional helps women consider how love searches, cherishes, guards, and moves toward covenant faithfulness.
There is a longing in love that desires to find the one who is beloved. There is also a faithfulness in marriage that learns to seek, wait, confirm, and remain devoted. True love is not only a romantic feeling, nor is it merely a passing emotion. It is something treasured in the heart, expressed through action, and guarded within the relationship.
Song of Solomon Chapter 3 begins with the image of a woman seeking her beloved at night. She looks for him upon her bed, but does not find him. So she rises and goes about the city, through the streets and broad ways, searching for the one her soul loves. She is not content with distant longing; she rises to seek. She does not easily give up; she continues until she finds him.
This chapter helps us reflect on longing and faithfulness in love. Whether we are preparing for marriage, living within marriage, or considering the spiritual love between the soul and the Lord, Song of Solomon Chapter 3 reminds us that true love seeks, cherishes, holds fast, and in the right time moves toward deeper commitment.
Song of Solomon Chapter 3 presents two important scenes. The first is the woman seeking the beloved whom her soul loves. She seeks him upon her bed, but does not find him. She rises and goes about the city, searching in the streets and broad ways. She asks the watchmen, “Saw ye him whom my soul loveth?” Soon after, she finds him and holds him, refusing to let him go.
This scene is full of longing in love. The woman does not wait with indifference, nor does she easily let go. She searches with deep affection and devotion. This kind of seeking is not uncontrolled impulse, but the devoted cherishing of the one who is loved. If love is real, it will not become careless toward the relationship. If love is faithful, it will not easily allow the heart to be taken away by other things.
The second scene is the glorious appearance of Solomon’s wedding procession. Someone comes up out of the wilderness with the fragrance of myrrh and frankincense. There is a royal carriage, valiant men, beautiful adornment, and the joy of a wedding day. The picture moves from private longing to public covenant and celebration. It reminds us that love is not meant to remain forever in hidden desire or romantic feeling alone; it is meant to move toward holy, steadfast, and public commitment.
From the perspective of “Marriage and Husband-Wife Relationship,” Song of Solomon Chapter 3 reminds us that love needs longing and faithfulness; seeking and guarding; heartfelt affection and real commitment. Love in marriage does not remain fresh automatically. When husband and wife live too long in busyness, silence, distance, disappointment, or routine, love can become covered by misunderstanding and weariness. We need to learn to seek one another again, draw near again, listen again, and guard the first love and covenant before God.
Today’s theme, “Song of Solomon: Seeking the Beloved,” invites us to reflect: Do I still cherish the intimate relationship God has given? In love or marriage, am I willing to seek, communicate, and repair actively instead of only waiting for the other person to come near first? In my spiritual life, do I seek the Lord with longing, like one seeking the beloved, and guard my heart from being carried away by the noise of the world?
1 The woman says, “By night on my bed I sought him whom my soul loveth.” In your relationships, do you still carry tenderness, longing, and appreciation for the one you love? If you are married, have busyness, routine, disappointment, or silence caused you and your spouse to stop intentionally seeking one another?
2 The woman rises and searches through the city until she finds her beloved. Faithfulness in love is not only a feeling in the heart; it also leads to action. Are you willing to take one step in marriage, relationships, or family life: to begin a conversation, express gratitude, repair misunderstanding, end silent conflict, or make time again for companionship?
3 The second half of this chapter gives us the picture of a wedding, reminding us that love is meant to move toward holy commitment. How do you view covenant in marriage? In a time when love is often treated as feeling, personal choice, or individual satisfaction, are you willing to ask God to help you guard love with faithfulness, responsibility, and holiness?
As you read Song of Solomon Chapter 3 today, do not see it only as a romantic poem. Let it also remind you that love needs seeking, relationships need guarding, and commitment requires faithfulness. May God use today’s Scripture to help us consider longing, respect, devotion, and covenant in intimate relationships.
Take a quiet breath before you begin. Bring your longing, disappointment, coldness, hope, and desire for renewal in love, marriage, family, and your relationship with the Lord before Him, and let His Word meet you there.
“It was but a little that I passed from them, but I found him whom my soul loveth: I held him, and would not let him go.”
— Song of Solomon 3:4
3 By night on my bed I sought him whom my soul loveth: I sought him, but I found him not.
2 I will rise now, and go about the city in the streets, and in the broad ways I will seek him whom my soul loveth: I sought him, but I found him not.
3 The watchmen that go about the city found me: to whom I said, Saw ye him whom my soul loveth?
4 It was but a little that I passed from them, but I found him whom my soul loveth: I held him, and would not let him go, until I had brought him into my mother's house, and into the chamber of her that conceived me.
5 I charge you, O ye daughters of Jerusalem, by the roes, and by the hinds of the field, that ye stir not up, nor awake my love, till he please.
6 Who is this that cometh out of the wilderness like pillars of smoke, perfumed with myrrh and frankincense, with all powders of the merchant?
7 Behold his bed, which is Solomon's; threescore valiant men are about it, of the valiant of Israel.
8 They all hold swords, being expert in war: every man hath his sword upon his thigh because of fear in the night.
9 King Solomon made himself a chariot of the wood of Lebanon.
10 He made the pillars thereof of silver, the bottom thereof of gold, the covering of it of purple, the midst thereof being paved with love, for the daughters of Jerusalem.
11 Go forth, O ye daughters of Zion, and behold king Solomon with the crown wherewith his mother crowned him in the day of his espousals, and in the day of the gladness of his heart.
✨ Thank you for walking through today’s Scripture with us, dear sister.
Song of Solomon Chapter 3 shows us the longing of the woman seeking her beloved and the covenant beauty of the wedding procession. Love is not a cold habit, nor is it only a private feeling in the heart. Love seeks, cherishes, guards, and moves toward faithful commitment. Now, let us bring our love, marriage, family relationships, and longing for the Lord before God in prayer.
🩷
Asking God to Renew My Cherishing of Love
Father, thank You for reminding me through Song of Solomon Chapter 3 that true love is not cold or numb. It longs, seeks, and cherishes. The woman sought the one her soul loved, not because love is merely a passing emotion, but because she had treasured him in her heart and expressed that love through action.
Lord, please shine Your light on my attitude toward love. If I have become cold in marriage or relationships, warm my heart again. If disappointment has caused me to shut down, heal the wounds within me. If I have taken another person’s presence, faithfulness, or care for granted, give me a heart of gratitude and appreciation. Help me not only to expect to be loved, but also to learn to love actively—to seek, draw near, respond, and cherish. Amen.

Guarding the Covenant of Love with Faithfulness
Father, the second half of Song of Solomon Chapter 3 gives us the picture of a wedding and reminds me that love is not only feeling, but commitment. Lord, in this generation, many people treat love as temporary romance, personal satisfaction, or a choice that can be abandoned whenever it becomes difficult. But the marriage You established is a holy covenant—a relationship of belonging, guarding, and supporting one another.
Help me view marriage and intimate relationships with reverence before You. If I am married, help me faithfully guard this covenant and not allow coldness, temptation, resentment, selfishness, or pride to quietly damage love. If I am preparing for a relationship or marriage, teach me not to treat commitment lightly or give my heart away carelessly, but to approach love with holiness, wisdom, and prayer. May my love not be shallow, but purified, strengthened, and guided before You. Amen.
🧑🧑🧒🧒
Father, I also pray for the sisters around me and for their relationships. Some are experiencing coldness in marriage. Some feel lonely in a relationship. Some are afraid to trust love again because of past wounds. Some are preparing for marriage and need wisdom and discernment from You. Others may appear peaceful outwardly, yet inwardly long to be understood, cherished, and sought.
Lord, please care for them personally. Heal wounded hearts. Restore communication between husbands and wives. Help those who are dating learn holiness and respect. Sustain single sisters with the fullness of Your love, so that loneliness will not lead them into relationships that are not pleasing to You. Help us as sisters encourage one another, not adding pressure through comparison or judgment, but supporting each other with truth, gentleness, and prayer. Amen.

Praying for Broken Marriages and Wounded Families
Compassionate God, I also pray for broken marriages, wounded families, and relationships where faithfulness has been lost. Many people long for love but do not know how to love. Many marriages are torn by coldness, betrayal, violence, poverty, pressure, and self-centeredness. Many children are wounded in the middle of broken relationships.
Lord, have mercy on this generation. Restore respect for the marriage covenant. Teach people faithfulness, forgiveness, communication, and self-giving love. Protect those who are being harmed, heal broken families, and raise up churches to support marriages, accompany families, protect the vulnerable, and witness to true love. May the world see that love from You is not possession or harm, but holiness, faithfulness, kindness, and protection. Amen.
After reading Song of Solomon Chapter 3, we see the woman’s longing as she seeks her beloved and the beauty of love moving toward the covenant of marriage. Love is not meant to drift with changing moods, nor should it be slowly forgotten in the busyness of life. True love needs seeking, cherishing, guarding, and faithful commitment.
As we close this page and return to real life, perhaps you have grown used to silence in marriage. Perhaps you feel weary in a relationship. Perhaps you are waiting and longing to be loved. Perhaps you also notice that your heart toward the Lord has grown cold. Remember this: today’s Scripture invites us to seek again what we love—to draw near again in marriage, to cherish again in relationships, and to seek the Lord again in spiritual life.
May today’s Scripture remind you that love is not only a feeling, but a willingness to act, guard, and remain faithful. May God help you not grow cold in love, not give up too easily in relationships, and receive again before Him a heart of longing and commitment.
