Day 200 of the Women’s Bible Plan: Read Proverbs Chapter 4 and reflect on the theme “Keep Thy Heart.” Through a father’s wise instruction to his children, this devotional focuses on parenting and family discipleship—not only teaching children outward behavior, but helping them value the condition of the heart, discern the right path, love wisdom, and learn to guard their hearts before God.
As parents, grandparents, teachers, or those who care for children, we often naturally pay attention to outward behavior. Are the children doing well in school? Are they respectful? Are they developing good habits? Are they listening? Are they staying away from trouble? These things matter, and children do need structure, correction, and guidance.
But Proverbs Chapter 4 reminds us that deeper discipleship is not only about managing behavior. It is about helping children understand the heart.
A person’s path often begins in the heart. How a child sees himself, faces temptation, handles emotions, chooses friends, responds to pressure, and receives God’s Word is deeply connected to what is happening inside. If we only control outward actions but do not help children learn to guard their hearts, they may obey for a time without truly growing in wisdom.
Proverbs Chapter 4 sounds like a father lovingly and seriously instructing his children: hear instruction, get wisdom, walk in the right path, and turn away from the way of the wicked. At the center of the chapter is this vital word: “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”
Proverbs Chapter 4 is filled with the atmosphere of family instruction. The writer speaks like a father teaching his children, calling them to hear instruction, hold fast to wisdom, and not forsake understanding. He remembers that he himself was once a son before his father and was taught to get wisdom and understanding, to love wisdom, and to treasure her because wisdom guards and preserves a person.
This chapter is not merely saying, “Children should obey.” It is saying, “Children need wisdom.” True wisdom is more than knowing what is allowed and what is forbidden. It is the fear of the Lord shaping the heart so that a child learns to choose the path of righteousness from within. If parental instruction only remains at the level of rules, a child may learn outward compliance. But when parents help children love wisdom, cherish truth, and discern good from evil, children slowly learn to make choices from the heart.
Proverbs Chapter 4 also speaks very realistically about two paths: the path of the just and the way of the wicked. The way of the wicked may appear attractive. It may offer excitement, peer approval, or short-term gain, but it leads into darkness. The path of the just is like the shining light, growing brighter unto the perfect day. This is important for parenting and family discipleship because growing children are constantly facing different paths. Parents cannot make every choice for their children forever, but they can help them build discernment while they are still young.
The central reminder of this chapter is to keep the heart. The heart is not only about emotions. It includes thoughts, desires, values, motives, loves, and direction. If a child’s heart is shaped by comparison, fear, vanity, greed, bitterness, lies, or the voices of the world, outward behavior will eventually be affected. But if a child’s heart is formed by God’s Word, wisdom, truth, and love, life will be rooted differently.
Today’s theme, “Keep Thy Heart,” invites us to reflect: In parenting and family life, are we only watching children’s outward performance, or are we also walking with them as they learn to understand their hearts? Are we only correcting wrong behavior, or are we helping children recognize motives, desires, struggles, and choices within? God calls us to become transmitters of wisdom in the home—not merely training children for success, but training them to fear the Lord, love wisdom, and value the heart.
1 Proverbs Chapter 4 repeatedly calls children to hear instruction and get wisdom. When you guide children or influence the next generation, do you more often focus on whether they are “doing the right thing,” or do you also help them understand why wisdom, honesty, goodness, and the fear of the Lord matter?
2 “Keep thy heart with all diligence.” What do you think most easily shapes children’s hearts today? Social media, peer pressure, academic comparison, appearance anxiety, gaming, short videos, lies, fear, or an excessive pursuit of success? How can you gently and practically help children learn to discern and guard their hearts?
3 Proverbs Chapter 4 speaks of the path of the just and the way of the wicked. Do you regularly pray for the future paths of the children in your life? Beyond warning them to avoid what is wrong, how can you help them see in daily conversations that the way of wisdom may not always be easy, but it leads to light, peace, and life?
As you read Proverbs Chapter 4 today, do not read it only as instruction for children. Let it first shine on your own heart. If we desire to help children guard their hearts, we also need to learn before God how to guard our own.
Take a quiet breath before you begin. Bring your family, children, parenting pressures, concerns, and hopes before the Lord, and let His Word meet you there.
“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”
— Proverbs 4:23
4 Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding.
2 For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law.
3 For I was my father's son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother.
4 He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live.
5 Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth.
6 Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee.
7 Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.
8 Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her.
9 She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee.
10 Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of thy life shall be many.
11 I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths.
12 When thou goest, thy steps shall not be straitened; and when thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble.
13 Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life.
14 Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men.
15 Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away.
16 For they sleep not, except they have done mischief; and their sleep is taken away, unless they cause some to fall.
17 For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence.
18 But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.
19 The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble.
20 My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.
21 Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.
22 For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.
23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.
24 Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee.
25 Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.
26 Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.
27 Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.
✨ Thank you for walking through today’s Scripture with us, dear sister.
Proverbs Chapter 4 shows us that wise parenting is not only about correcting outward behavior. It is about helping children value the heart, choose the right path, love wisdom, and learn to guard their hearts before God. Now, let us bring our families, children, the next generation, and our responsibilities as parents, elders, teachers, or spiritual companions before the Lord in prayer.
🩷
Let My Own Heart Be Guarded by God First
Father, thank You for reminding me through Proverbs Chapter 4 that the issues of life flow from the heart. Many times, I easily focus on a child’s behavior while forgetting to examine my own heart. My anxiety, comparison, impatience, control, disappointment, and fear can also shape the way I teach, speak, and respond to a child’s weakness.
Lord, please guard my heart first. Do not let me raise children out of anxiety, nor measure their worth by appearance, achievement, or performance. Help me become quiet before You and allow Your Word to adjust my vision, motives, and emotions. May my own heart first be searched by Your truth and settled in Your love, so that I can walk with children in wisdom and gentleness. Amen.

Help Children Love Wisdom, Not Merely Follow Rules
Lord, help me not only build rules in the home, but also pass on wisdom. Children need to know what is right and wrong, but even more, they need to understand why the path of fearing You is worth choosing. Please give me the right words and the right moments to help children know truth, discern good and evil, understand motives, and learn to take responsibility for their choices in daily life.
When a child makes a mistake, help me not only correct the outward behavior, but also patiently ask what is happening in the heart: What are they afraid of? What are they longing for? Why were they tempted? Why did they want to hide or avoid the truth? May our home become a place where the heart can be faced honestly—not a place full of shame and pressure, but a place filled with truth, grace, repentance, and the hope of beginning again. Amen.

Guide Children on the Path of Light
Father, Proverbs says that the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day. Lord, I pray for the paths of children and the next generation. So many voices in this world are fighting for their hearts: comparison, vanity, pornography, violence, lies, ambition, addiction, fear, and self-centeredness. Please protect them from being drawn away from You by dark paths.
Help children know Your Word from a young age, love wisdom, treasure a clean heart, and choose honesty, righteousness, mercy, and the fear of the Lord. When they face peer pressure, online temptation, academic stress, or major life decisions, let there be light from You within their hearts. Show them where to walk, and give them strength to turn away from the paths they should not take. Amen.

Interceding for Families
Father, I also pray for the parents, grandparents, teachers, Sunday school teachers, and spiritual companions around me who are helping raise children. You know that guiding the next generation is not easy. Many love children deeply yet feel tired. They want to lead well, yet worry they do not have enough wisdom. They hope children will walk in the right path, yet face real conflicts, resistance, pressure, and helplessness.
Lord, give them wisdom, patience, and hope. Do not let them be controlled only by a child’s temporary performance, and do not let them lose heart when they fail. Help them uphold children through prayer, guide them with truth, receive them with love, and keep boundaries with firmness. May our homes and churches become soil for the spiritual growth of the next generation, where children learn to guard their hearts and walk in Your ways. Amen.
After reading Proverbs Chapter 4, we see that true wisdom in parenting is not merely requiring children to behave well outwardly. It is helping them understand the heart, love wisdom, discern paths, and learn to guard their hearts before God. Behavior matters, but the heart behind the behavior needs to be guided and renewed by God’s Word.
As we close this page and return to real family life, there may still be homework reminders, household rules, emotional moments, arguments, concerns about screen use, or worries about the future. Remember this: parenting is not a race measured only by visible results. It is a daily journey of walking with a child’s heart as it grows. God has not called us to shape children through anxiety, but to accompany them with wisdom, prayer, truth, and love.
May today’s Scripture remind you to first entrust your own heart to God, and then gently guide children to bring their hearts before Him. May your home become not only a place where behavior is managed, but a place where wisdom, honesty, repentance, love, and the fear of the Lord are learned. May children, through such companionship, gradually learn to keep their hearts and walk on the path that grows brighter and brighter.
