September 25: Mark 4:21-25: A Lamp Set on a Candlestick
Women’s Bible Reading Plan Day 268. Today we read Mark 4:21-25. The theme is “A Lamp Set on a Candlestick.” Through Jesus’ teaching about the lamp, hidden things, and the measure we use, we learn to receive the true light and let our lives shine for others. This page includes Mark 4:21-25 Scripture, devotional reflection, meditation questions, a daily devotional verse, prayer, and life application.
Sometimes we may feel that our lives are ordinary, and what we can do seems small. Maybe we are simply caring for family, working faithfully, raising children, encouraging a friend, or quietly holding on in a place no one sees. But Jesus reminds us that a lamp is not meant to be put under a bushel or under a bed. It is meant to be set on a candlestick.
This is a gentle and powerful reminder. God lights our hearts not only to comfort us, but also to shine through us. A soft answer, a word of encouragement, an honest choice, a patient spirit, or a quiet act of love may become a light in someone else’s darkness.
In Mark 4:21-25, Jesus teaches His disciples through the picture of a lamp and a candlestick. A lamp is not lit in order to be hidden, but to be placed where its light can shine. God’s truth is the same. He does not give us His Word so that we only keep it inside without response. His light is meant to be seen through our lives.
Jesus also says that there is nothing hidden that shall not be manifested, and nothing kept secret that shall not come abroad. This reminds us that God sees the true condition of our hearts. Outward appearances may hide things for a while, but life will eventually reveal what is within. What we treasure, believe, and obey will slowly show in our words, choices, relationships, and daily living.
Then Jesus says, “Take heed what ye hear.” How we listen to God’s Word matters. If we listen with hunger, honesty, and obedience, we will receive more light. But if we listen casually and quickly forget, the light within us can grow dim.
Today’s theme, “A Lamp Set on a Candlestick,” invites us to ask: Am I willing to let God’s Word shine into me and also shine through me? Dear sister, your light may not feel big, but in God’s hands, one small faithful light can warm a home, comfort a heart, and brighten someone’s path.
1 Jesus says that a lamp is not meant to be placed under a bushel or under a bed, but on a candlestick. What has God recently lit in your life—faith, gentleness, hope, love, or a word that could encourage someone else?
2 Some light is not dazzling, but it is warm. In your home, workplace, church, or friendships, what is one small way you can let others feel the light of God through you?
3 Jesus says, “Take heed what ye hear.” Recently, when you listen to God’s Word, are you receiving it carefully, or are you often distracted, hurried, and quick to move on? How can you make more room for His Word?
4 Jesus says, “With what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you.” In your relationships, are you willing to offer more kindness, patience, understanding, and forgiveness? In which relationship can you shine a little light today?
Today, let us enter Mark 4:21-25 with these questions. Do not underestimate the light God has placed within you, and do not take lightly the truth you hear each day. The Lord can use a sister who is willing to be lit by Him to bring warmth to many hearts.
Let us take a quiet moment, bring our hearts before the Lord, and ask Him to light us and send us out as His light.
“Is a candle brought to be put under a bushel, or under a bed? and not to be set on a candlestick?”
— Mark 4:21
21 And he said unto them, Is a candle brought to be put under a bushel, or under a bed? and not to be set on a candlestick?
22 For there is nothing hid, which shall not be manifested; neither was any thing kept secret, but that it should come abroad.
23 If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.
24 And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given.
25 For he that hath, to him shall be given: and he that hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he hath.
✨ Thank you for walking through today’s Scripture with us, dear sister.
Mark 4:21-25 reminds us that a lamp is lit not to be hidden, but to give light. God’s Word shines into our hearts and is meant to be lived out through us. Now let us come before the Lord and ask Him to help us receive the true light and let our lives shine for others.

Ask the Lord to First Shine Into My Heart
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for being willing to shine into my heart through Your Word. Many times, I may look fine on the outside, but inside I carry tiredness, worry, hurt, fear, or weakness that I do not want others to see. Thank You that You do not shine on me to shame me, but to guide me back to You with love and truth.
Lord, shine into my heart. Help me see where I truly need You. Rekindle hope, peace, and faith within me, so that I do not try to shine by my own strength, but first receive light from You. Amen.
✨
Ask the Lord to Help Me Shine in Small Things
Lord, I often feel that my strength is small and what I can do is limited. But You remind me that once a lamp is lit, it can brighten the place where it stands. Help me not to overlook the place You have given me in my family, work, church, and relationships.
Let me use gentle words instead of impatience, encouragement instead of criticism, honesty instead of hiding, and forgiveness instead of keeping score. May I live out Your light in ordinary things, so that people around me may feel more of Your love. Amen.

Ask the Lord for a Heart That Listens Carefully
Heavenly Father, Jesus said, “Take heed what ye hear.” Help me not to hear Your Word and then quickly move on without taking it to heart. Do not let busyness, my phone, emotions, or life’s pressures distract me so much that I hear but do not truly respond.
Give me a soft, attentive, and obedient heart. The more I hear Your Word, the more may I understand Your heart. The more I receive Your light, the more may I live out Your truth. Amen.

Interceding for Sisters
Heavenly Father, I also pray for the sisters around me. Please light their hearts, especially those who keep going while tired, love others under pressure, and still look to You through tears. Let them know that they are not small or useless in Your eyes. Their lives can become a warm light to someone else.
Help us encourage one another, so that no sister feels she has to stand alone. May we be lit by You together and become women who bring light to others. Amen.
After reading Mark 4:21-25, we see that the purpose of a lamp is not to be hidden, but to shine. God places His truth in our hearts not merely as knowledge, but so that it may come forth through our lives.
Dear sister, do not underestimate the light the Lord has placed within you. A gentle word, a patient listening ear, an honest choice, or a quiet act of faithfulness may be the very light someone needs today.
May you first be lit by the Lord, and may your life shine in ordinary days. A lamp on a candlestick may not look dramatic, but it can truly warm others, guide others, and glorify the Lord.
🎉🎉 Congratulations on completing today's devotion! 🎉🎉
