Day 204 of the Women’s Bible Plan: Read Proverbs 10:1 and Proverbs 15:20 and reflect on how the wisdom of children brings joy to the family. Through these short but weighty verses, this devotional invites women to consider the spiritual influence of children’s choices, parents’ guidance, and the calling to build family life upon the fear of the Lord.
Joy in a family does not usually come from perfect circumstances. More often, it grows from hearts that are willing to fear the Lord and walk in wisdom. Proverbs speaks honestly about family life: the choices of children affect the hearts of their parents; and the teaching, example, and prayers of parents deeply influence the path children learn to walk.
Today’s Scripture is brief, but it carries great weight. Proverbs says, “A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.” It also says, “A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish man despiseth his mother.” These verses do not place the entire burden of family joy on children, nor do they give parents a tool for controlling their children. Rather, they remind us that family members are not isolated individuals. One person’s wisdom or foolishness can bring real impact into the home.
Within the theme of parenting and family, this passage invites us to reflect: As children, how do we respond to our parents with a heart that fears God? As mothers, older women, mentors, or spiritual companions, how do we guide the next generation through prayer, example, and wisdom?
Proverbs 10:1 says, “A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.” Proverbs 15:20 gives a similar reminder: “A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish man despiseth his mother.” Both verses place wisdom at the center of the parent-child relationship and show us that the direction of a child’s life is not merely a private matter. It can touch the joy and sorrow of the whole household.
In Scripture, wisdom is not merely intelligence, good grades, practical skill, or social cleverness. True wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord. It is the willingness to listen to God’s Word and walk in uprightness, humility, honesty, love, and self-control. A wise child may not excel in every outward way, but there will be signs of a heart that honors God: a teachable spirit, responsible choices, respect, integrity, and a desire to walk in what is right.
Proverbs also speaks honestly about the hearts of parents. A child’s wisdom brings gladness to a father, while a child’s foolishness brings heaviness to a mother. Many parents understand this deeply. This joy and sorrow are not shallow emotions. They are the tender concern of love. When children walk in the right way, parents are comforted; when children turn away from God, reject instruction, or live carelessly, parents carry a grief that can be difficult to express.
Yet these verses are not meant to make parents pressure children with guilt, nor to make children live under the burden of constantly satisfying parental expectations. They point us more deeply to the spiritual calling within the family. Parents are called to teach their children with God’s Word, and children are called to receive wisdom with humble hearts. The joy of the home does not come from everyone performing perfectly. It grows as the family learns together to walk in the wisdom of God.
Today’s theme, “A Wise Son Maketh a Glad Father,” invites us to consider: Am I willing to pursue godly wisdom in my own role? If I am a child, am I willing to bring comfort to my parents through reverence for God and upright living? If I am a parent, elder, or mentor, am I willing to guide the next generation with prayer, example, and gentle but firm instruction? If I belong to a spiritual family, am I willing to bless the next generation instead of only criticizing their weakness?
1 Proverbs says that a wise son makes a glad father. How do you understand the meaning of wisdom? In your own life, where does wisdom need to be seen more clearly: listening to God’s Word, honoring parents, managing emotions, living honestly, taking responsibility, or making choices that please the Lord?
2 The choices of children affect the hearts of parents. As a child, have you ever considered how your words, attitude, and life direction may bring joy or sorrow to your parents or family? Is God inviting you to grow in maturity, thoughtfulness, or a more teachable spirit?
3 If you are a parent, elder, or spiritual companion, are you praying for the next generation to grow in wisdom? Do you more often respond to children with anxiety, control, and criticism, or are you willing to guide them through God’s Word, life example, patient companionship, and prayer?
As you read Proverbs 10:1 and Proverbs 15:20 today, let these short verses speak into the deep relationships of the home: parents’ concern, children’s growth, the passing on of wisdom, and a family learning together to fear the Lord.
Take a quiet breath before you begin. Bring your family, parents, children, parent-child relationships, and the joys, worries, regrets, and hopes in your heart before the Lord, and let His Word meet you there.
“A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.”
— Proverbs 10:1
10 The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.
20 A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish man despiseth his mother.
✨ Thank you for walking through today’s Scripture with us, dear sister.
Proverbs 10:1 and Proverbs 15:20 remind us that the wisdom of children brings joy to parents, while foolishness brings sorrow and heaviness. God cares about spiritual inheritance within the family. He cares about how children receive instruction and how parents guide the next generation. Now, let us bring our families, parent-child relationships, parents’ hearts, children’s growth, and our longing for wisdom before the Lord in prayer.

Asking God for Wisdom That Begins with Reverence
Father, thank You for reminding me through Proverbs that true wisdom is not merely knowing how to succeed, speak well, or handle life skillfully. True wisdom begins with the fear of You. First, build wisdom in my own heart. Do not let me live only according to my temper, experience, wounds, or anxiety. Teach me to listen to Your Word and walk in uprightness, honesty, humility, and love.
Lord, whether I am living as a daughter, mother, wife, elder, or someone who accompanies others in a spiritual family, help me become a person of wisdom. Let my words build up the home. Let my choices be responsible. Teach me to respond to conflict with gentleness and to face imperfection with patience. May my life not add more burden to my family, but become a blessing and comfort in the home. Amen.

Praying for Children to Walk in Wisdom
Lord, I place children and the next generation into Your hands. Whether they are young, teenagers, adults, or in different stages of growth, please draw their hearts to You. Help them know You, fear You, and love Your Word. May they not only chase outward success, but receive wisdom from You in their hearts. Teach them to discern good from evil, turn away from foolishness, and choose the upright path.
If they are confused, guide them. If they are rebellious, gently restore them. If they are drawn by the values of the world, protect them with truth. If they are already willing to follow You, deepen and strengthen their faith. May their lives bring comfort to their parents, and may their families be filled with true joy because they fear You. Amen.

Learning to Parent and Accompany with Wisdom Instead of Anxiety
Father, I confess that when I face my family and children, I am often moved by anxiety. When I see immaturity, I become impatient. When I see mistakes, I become afraid. When they do not walk in the direction I expected, I want to control. Please forgive me and teach me to love them with heavenly wisdom.
Help me understand that true love is not careless permissiveness, nor is it bondage through pressure. True love has tenderness within truth, grace within boundaries, patience within correction, and faith within waiting. Give me fewer anxious rebukes and more sincere listening. Give me less fear-driven control and more prayer-filled trust. May I become a vessel who guides children toward You, rather than placing my own unrest upon them. Amen.

Interceding for Families
Father, I also pray for the families around me. You know how many parents are worried about their children. Some worry about their children’s faith. Some worry about character, school, work, marriage, emotions, and the future. You also know the misunderstandings, conflicts, distance, and unhealed wounds between many children and parents.
Lord, bring wisdom, understanding, and love into these homes. May parents not merely demand children who make them look good, but truly help children become people who fear the Lord. May children not only pursue their own freedom, but also learn to understand their parents’ hearts and honor their parents’ labor. Restore broken parent-child relationships, heal old wounds, and let many families find renewed joy, respect, and peace through Your Word. Amen.
After reading Proverbs 10:1 and Proverbs 15:20, we see that a child’s wisdom brings gladness to parents, while foolishness brings sorrow and heaviness. Joy in the family does not come only from enough material provision, smooth schedules, or everyone meeting expectations. A deeper joy comes when family members learn to fear God, receive wisdom, and walk in upright paths.
As we close this page and return to real family life, parent-child relationships may not be simple. There is love, but also worry; expectation, but also disappointment; communication, but also misunderstanding. Yet remember this: God’s Word can still enter the home. God’s wisdom can still shape children and renew the hearts of parents.
May today’s Scripture remind you not to stop praying for your family and not to despise daily teaching, example, and companionship. May God give children wisdom that fears Him, and give parents hearts that guide with love and truth. May wisdom not remain only on the page, but become real joy, comfort, and blessing in the home.
